I do astrophotography and the "nifty-fifty" is a great value. Highly recommend people to aim at the starry sky at night on a tripod, step down the aperture one (helps with star shapes) and take a few 4-5 second photos. Zoom lens are almost a no-no in most cases. The most popular lens for either Canon or Nikon or Pentax for astrophotography is the Samyang 135mm F/2.
2:11 if someone has the 70-200 2.8 and don't know he has a zoom lens , I don't know what to say ? 2000$ lens....nice video :-) Prime lens is really great of making you think about the composition , and different angle. really improve you as a photographer. if someone is a good photographer , he will know how to use the fixed lens , to achieve great photos... "which lens should I buy? " I would ask "How much money can you spend on a lens? " :-)
I’m definitely onboard with all the things you mentioned here. I always prefer a zoom telephoto for wildlife because I usually don’t have the time and/or ability to move around to compose a shot. But for artistic endeavors, like street or portrait photography, it’s prime lenses all the way! It’s so hard to beat the image quality of a nice prime lens once you really learn how to use one. A word people almost never use to describe a prime lens is versatility. People always think of versatility as strictly relating to your angle of view (zoom lenses being more versatile in THAT regard). But as you mentioned, prime lenses usually allow for a much wider aperture. This alone gives the user more versatility when it comes to light levels AND depth of field. Naturally, this also gives you greater versatility when it comes to shutter speeds and ISO (keep it low, right?). So from that perspective, a prime lens can be viewed as MORE versatile in many ways. Pair it with a quality variable ND filter, and you have a pretty versatile setup. I’m in LOVE with my Tamron 35mm f/1.4. It is simply unbelievable what this lens can produce! Btw, if you use a crop sensor camera, a 35mm lens will frame your shots at a similar angle as a “nifty fifty.”

Paul, I have watched a number of your videos, and really appreciate your "no nonsense" approach. My first 35mm camera was a Canon A1 with a 50mm prime lens (which I still have). Paul, could you do a video dealing with quality of glass in lenses? What are the benefits of high quality glass over low quality glass, for example the glass in a $2,000 lens vs the glass in a kit lens.
Try backing up in a church vestry with a prime lens doing a wedding. Changing to a wide angle takes time. Or being on the edge of a cliff!!!! I agree about the aperture though. We've all missed shots not having the right lens on.

Yes I was going to mention that, the benefit of getting a cheap old motor body Nikon for is a wider choice of auto lenses and if you can't afford a new one get and oldie like a D50 or D200 for peanut's, and there are others as well.
I enjoy your channel in helping me learn more about photography and I'm still learning more as I go and watch videos too. I just bought the canon Eos rebel t7(2000d) and I want to purchase another lens to able to work on my moon shots again, prior to this new purchase I had the canon pro shot 530xs I took some amazing pictures of my moon, but I want to get those amazing shots now with this new camera. What do you is your recommendation, also I enjoy taking sunrises/sunsets too. Eventually I want to learn how to do more shooting of other objects that are near me.
for those people who says that now a days there is no much difference between prime and zoom lens much, i would suggest them buy a nikon 50mm1.8 S zmount lens and then talk, its a lens for an age, its a beast.. no zoom can beat it..

Get a part-time job. After three weeks, you should be able to save up $375 (AUD). For $375 (AUD) you can go buy a used Canon T3i in good condition and a used 18-55mm IS kit lens. Go buy a 32 Gb SD card for $10 (AUD) and go out and start taking pictures. Watch Paul's videos to learn about the Exposure Triangle and then go shoot some more photos. You will be on your way.

Hey, first of all thank you for your great videos. Really enjoying them very much as someone who is fairly new to photography. I've got a question for you and I hope it's not too silly: I watched several of your videos about prime lenses and read a few articles on the web. I'm sure this is very oversimplified, but 50 mm prime lenses are always made out to be something like an all-rounder prime lens. If I use a 50 mm prime lens on an APS-C sensor, wouldn't that make it equivalent to a 75 mm prime on a full frame sensor? So wouldn't it be reasonable to get a 35mm prime for an APS-C as this kind of all-purpose prime lens? Does that make sense? :D I'm aware that it is probably more a question of "what am I going to use it for" or "what is my personal preference", but I thought I'd ask since it's not really cost-effective for a beginner to buy several lenses just to play around with them a bit. Hi Lori, Telephoto is the term used to describe a lens with a longer focal length, usually around 70mm or higher. You can purchase a telephoto zoom (for example a 70-300mm) but you can also get telephoto primes (300mm for example) but the primes tend to be very expensive so the zooms are usually better value. Hope that helps.
I picked up a 2nd hand EOS 450D, with the 18-55mm kit lens, and after having a little play around with it, and wearing it with the strap a little, I found that it felt heavy and unbalanced, and would start to get on my tits after a short while, plus, the sheer size of the lens is a bit much for casual "tourist snaps". Also I found myself trying the extreme ends of the ranges and 18 was too wide, 55 was generally to near and blurry, and I always wound up in the 24 to 45mm area, so I went for the ef-s 24mm pancake lens and it is an absolute game-changer.
The haunted Coachman Cheaper because it is nowhere near as good as the Canon. Paul reviewed it in another video and concluded it was nothing on the Canon.
I have always love your videos and postings in IG. I have always prefer zoom lens for my street photography. After watching your postings and videos, switching to Prime Lens made my photos better. No the nikon af-d is an autofocus lens, you just need a body that has a motor to drive the focusing system of the lens.

You can get a zoom with a constant aperture. Though more costly you can find bargains in the used market.
