Out here, the Rock Bass decline in the Susquehanna almost 30 years ago are now being seen as a possible indicator that the river was in trouble. 20/20 Hindsight, ya know. Good to see so many of them in that river, seems like it's in pretty good shape. I bet if you went shallow and flipped rocks, you'd find a ton of insect larva and other benthic invertebrates that indicative of water quality. More is better! Great Video!
That makes a lot of sense. Sad to hear they are on the decline out that way. Hope they can help restore needed habitat and whatnot to bring them back up in numbers.

@@FishAnything it's a Sakana SKR-8 5'6" 1 piece UL Fast tip 2-6lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures. I think its the Gander Outdoors brand. Paid like $60 for it and have fished with it for 2 seasons. Hey I just have a really quick question I want to buy some of your donkey tails but not sure what size to buy I'm going to use them for trout small Bass maybe crappie and I live in Pennsylvania what do you think would work the best.
Hey there Jbird thanks a ton for the support! I think that both sizes would absolutely work but if you are mostly trout and small bass, I would probably go with the full size Donkey Tail. Big Crappie will eat it too! If you want to increase your quantity and open up the doors for more panfish, go with a Donkey Tail Jr.

Interesting - not sure I have ever seen one so I will need to check them out. If you want a do-it-all and you want to support a Texas-based company, go with the Temple Fork 6' Trout & Panfish. Hard to beat!
Well now that you've reviewed this high end rod you need to do comparison videos for the St. Croix Panfish Legend Elite, the G. Loomis equivalent, and the TFO equivalent for good measure. That is the video the people need.
I have a dobyns Sierra trout and panfish, a st croix legend elite and a loomis trout and panfish. The loomis has more of a parabolic bend than the other two and is well suited for treble hook baits, balances well and I really like the handle on it. The St Croix is pretty stiff, more so than the dobyns, is tip heavy and the split grip with the eva bottom seems cheap for the cost of the rod. Honestly for the price I am pretty disappointed with the legend. The dobyns is my favorite of the 3 and happens to be the least expensive. I’m not crazy about the placement of the hook keeper on the dobyns being between the two portions of the grip and wish they offered a full cork option. My dobyns is a 7’4” and would say it has more tip than ethans and can easily cast 1/64 oz jigs with plastic. I don’t have a temple fork UL but figured I’d give feedback on the other 3 since you were asking for a comparison.
@@micahspilker9322 this is pretty much exactly what I needed. Trying to move up to a higher end rod but it's hard when no store anywhere has actual rods you can physically test. I like split grips and I don't mind the keeper on the butt of the rod. I do wish any of these models came with eva grips though. Thanks for the comparison. It helps.
Micah you are the man! Thanks for helping out. I definitely will plan on getting a TFO rod at some point as I have heard good things about it and I believe it is about $90 as compared to $150.
@@micahspilker9322yeah bud this reply really helped. I actually Have two Dobyns Sierra 7'9s on order and the Dobyns JJ-14 jig pole. Was looking for a quality crappie rig that had sensitivity, backbone and some casting distance with the Sierra. I was a little worried I might regret not looking at the other two brands. Can't wait to spool up some old beater Shimano reels with some 2ib braid and hit the spillway
How do you feel about the 7 foot 4 dobbins ultra light for bank crappie fishing. But if that’s not good do you have any recommendation. I prefer a 7ft for the cast distance.
Nice fishing, Ethan! For me, when I see an Ultralight rod that's rate to handle 1/32 to 1/4oz; I get a little concerned. That seems like a big weight range for me. That's what my Cabela's Fish Eagle Ultralight rod is rate for. It's 6 foot with fast action. If it does handle the 1/4oz, then I'm skeptical if it can handle the 1/32oz decently. Any experience with ultralight rods that have that large of spread of lure weight? I guess, I'll find out when I start fishing it this season, lol!
Honestly, that is such a good point Leo. In my experience, however, I don't really look at the lure ratings much because I don't think the manufacturers are actually paying much attention to it. It seems like they just throw the same 1/32 - 1/4 or 3/16 on anything rated ultralight. The Okuma Celilo rates up to 3/8oz if I am not mistaking haha I think as ultralight fishing continues to grow, we will see the ratings get more accurate, but for now I wouldn't stress it too much. If you plan to fish larger baits, I would step it up to a light. If you plan to fish micro baits, I would get an ultralight.
Honestly that length would likely do fine with either a 1000 or 2000. They are typically pretty similar in weight so it’s more of a preference thing. I’d probably just slap a 1000 on it and call it good.
Hey man great little vid 👌 im also an ultralight fisherman but mostly for wild browns over here in Scotland in small rivers but ive only been at it for a couple of years and i could really appreciate some advice i fish on a budget so no expensive set ups for me lol anyways i recently bought another 5ft 6 Abu Garcia devil spin rod UL and as inexpensive as it is i love it and have caught all my p.b's on it when i had one before, well the other day i treated myself to a Daiwa Legalis LT size 1000 reel, i fish with mepps and blue fox spinners and Salmo and Rapala hard lures anyways i need to know if i should get braid or if there is any other lines that are just as good regarding decent casting with smaller lighter lures and as my rod is only 5ft 6 i think id struggle to get a long enough leader to work with but im not sure and this is where i need the advice, on the box the reel came in and on the reel itself it says to use braid #6 0.6mm but no mention of what strength to use, i was wondering if i could maybe go up a tad and use braid a few mm more or i have to stick to what it says. Thanks in advance, take it easy and Tight lines ❤🎣✌💙👍 from Scotland🙋♂️
Since you are trout fishing, I would just go with a light monofilament. 2lb or 4lb will both work and can launch little baits very effectively. I like Trilene Sensation personally. Good luck man!
Some not all. A 7ft or 7ft 6" it should be good 6' 6" some can get away with a 200 Lews would work 5'6" you want a 1000 size or 800 reel I have a 4'10" rod with a 500 size Ryobi on it.
I think you could make it work with a longer rod to balance it out like Fredrick said, but I would personally prefer their size 100 or 200 because I don't think you will ever need that much line capacity. You could put about 300+ yards of 4lb test on that thing haha
Totally depends on your preference and style! I like the 6'2 model because it gives me a lot of versatility. That said, a 6'7 would be fantastic for a bit deeper water or longer casts.
@@FishAnything I kinda like the idea of shorter length for fishing creeks from the bank. I saw your video on the TFO rod. Have you fished small Rapala Original Floaters with that? I want an ultralight with fast enough action for micro jerkbaits, but I’m struggling to narrow it down
I know what I never see how to get the hook out of the fish mouth when they swallow the hook And what is the best way to remove it without killing them this happens to me all the time specially with the smaller fish
Definitely a good point! I’d recommend using forceps for small hooks. They allow you to get down in the mouth and remove it rather than trying with your fingers.
Hey Ethan! how does this rod hold up with baits like micro jerkbaits/crankbaits? Also, love your content! You got me into UL fishing and I've loved it loads. Mule Fishing is my go-to!
Thanks so much Daniël! This rod is definitely on the extra fast side so it takes some adjusting to get used to for treble hooked baits. But it totally handles them fine because of how the blank doubles down on a hookset. I think it’s a great jig rod and a good all purpose rod
I wanted to try ultra light fishing a year ago, before I found your videos. I bought a Shakespeare Durango 5'0 ultra light to see if I liked ultralight fishing. I started with a Diawa reel and eventually upgraded that to a Mitchell 308. I use 4lb mono. I have to admit I really like the $9 Shakespeare Durango rod. I do have a small issue with getting a good hook set on 2lb plus bass. As I use it more my hook setting has improved. The other issue is the rod is a 2 piece and the top half can come loose and fall off. I really like fishing with the set up and have caught a 7lb largemouth on the set up. What advantages would I experience by upgrading the rod?
Holy smokes if you landed a 7lb largie on that setup, I wouldn't change a thing haha Upgrading rod quality will potentially buy you a few things: 1) Increased components lead to increased sensitivity 2) Usually feature a higher quality reel seat that is more comfortable for a full day of fishing 3) Balance tends to increase which will help you cast and fish comfortably throughout the day Ultimately a lot of this is preference-based. Don't change if you like your setup. I would hold a few in a store and see if you think it would be a better setup for your personal style of fishing.
Wow!!! Thank you for answering my question. Everything you say makes sense. Right now the bass aren't slamming it. I have wondered about the sensitivity. The reel doesn't fit perfectly in the seat. I haven't had casting issues, but the other 2 issues are relevant to my situation. Thanks!!!
@@jdyohe04 Good luck James! I will continue reviewing several rods. Honestly, for $50, the 13 Fishing Defy Silver has been one of my favorites. Not sure if you have seen my video on that one yet, but you might take a look. Fun rod :)
Haven't watched that one yet. I will look for it. I have seen some of the higher end rods you reviewed. Probably more than I want to spend. My Dad was very into bass fishing when I was a kid. He bought all the high end rods, but I catch more fish on my ultralight than we caught with all the expensive rods.🤣
I’ve never used the St Croix Avid but I like the Dobyns a lot! It might be just a little stout for trout though. I think you might enjoy the temple fork trout and panfish tbh 🤠 it feels like a solid trout stick!!
The black tips on the rock bass fins could be a sign of them living in the vegitation. They develop strong white colored tips ( just like some trout ) when they are living in/on the rocks. As far as I understand, this is also a sign of a healthy diet in the fish as well!
They are definitely different rods. The TFO is a softer rod that will be more versatile but the Dobyns is a faster rod that will be better for jigging up big panfish. I personally prefer the Dobyns but I like the TFO as well :) If you want an all purpose UL, go with the TFO. If you want a really high quality UL with a fast action, go Dobyns.
I have the same thing happen on my local river, the smallmouth will swim next to me because the baitfish bite at my legs. The bass will hit them off my legs.
@@FishAnything Right on. I was looking to buy one. The handle and reel seat looks super comfy, bc i have all the plastic threads reel seats like the okuma or st croix. Just wish it was more moderate-fast action so the rod can bend and absorb more of trout's shakes.
It is a fantastic rod! My favorite UL for sure :) I don't dislike anything about it but will say that it isn't the best UL for casting super light weights. Because it is so fast, it doesn't sling a tiny jig out there the way some of the softer rods do.
You just learned something without knowing it. You are fishing with a trout rod that was designed by bass fisherman and you are fishing with it like a bass fisherman.

E Dawg, many times I've pulled 15+ rock bass from a stump or root ball in the water. They'll pack up in very dense schools.
They definitely congregate like crazy. I believe they may have been spawning too.
How do you feel about the 7 foot 4 dobbins ultra light for bank crappie fishing. But if that’s not good do you have any recommendation. I prefer a 7ft for the cast distance.
I haven't used that length but I imagine that will be a stellar bank fishing rod for slabs!
The Okuma Celilo rates up to 3/8oz if I am not mistaking haha
I think as ultralight fishing continues to grow, we will see the ratings get more accurate, but for now I wouldn't stress it too much. If you plan to fish larger baits, I would step it up to a light. If you plan to fish micro baits, I would get an ultralight.
You have a 1000 reel on the Dobyns 6ft 2. I'm thinking about getting the 6ft 7 Dobyns, would a 2000 reel be better for it?
@@FishAnything Great my man sound advice is the Trilene sensation expensive?
Yo do you thing a lews mach 2 size 300 is to big on a ultralight rod?
Some not all. A 7ft or 7ft 6" it should be good
6' 6" some can get away with a 200 Lews would work
5'6" you want a 1000 size or 800 reel
I have a 4'10" rod with a 500 size Ryobi on it.
I think you could make it work with a longer rod to balance it out like Fredrick said, but I would personally prefer their size 100 or 200 because I don't think you will ever need that much line capacity. You could put about 300+ yards of 4lb test on that thing haha
You think the 670SF would be a better option than the 620SF?
@online outdoorsman have you used a acc rod? If so what is your opinion on it?
Don’t have one yet but they look pretty decent!
Holy smokes if you landed a 7lb largie on that setup, I wouldn't change a thing haha
Upgrading rod quality will potentially buy you a few things:
1) Increased components lead to increased sensitivity
2) Usually feature a higher quality reel seat that is more comfortable for a full day of fishing
3) Balance tends to increase which will help you cast and fish comfortably throughout the day
Ultimately a lot of this is preference-based.
Realky like your review videos. Keep it up!!! I wish I had found your channel earlier.
This rod or the St Croix Avid for trout fishing in So-Cal lakes? Advice please.
Yeah I was also thinking they might be spawning and maybe it was a coloration thing during the spawn. Not sure, regardless they were awesome!
Have you try shimano poison adrena 6’10UL ??wondering how’s that rod is?? Thinking about one of the Sierra series for trout.
Ooooh that rod is probably epic but I haven’t got one yet. Maybe one of these days I’ll invest in it! I love the dobyns though
@@FishAnything kool thanks bro. Time for UL set up.
Been trying to get my hands on mule jigs for a while now when are they gonna be back in stock?
Home stretch! Won't be much longer :)
May have to snag one of those rods! Did you get one piece or two?
One piece! Definitely a solid rod - I have no complaints.
What was your lure? Can you provide a link to the grub and weight?
Mule Fishing 1/32oz Jig & Donkey Tail Jr. www.mulefishing.com
I love all this variety. What state do you live in?
Michigan! I also love the variety. So much fun!
How does this compare to ghe tfo one? Worth the extra money?
They are definitely different rods. The TFO is a softer rod that will be more versatile but the Dobyns is a faster rod that will be better for jigging up big panfish. I personally prefer the Dobyns but I like the TFO as well :)
If you want an all purpose UL, go with the TFO. If you want a really high quality UL with a fast action, go Dobyns.
What reel is that?
Daiwa Tatula LT 1000!
What kind of braid did you find in 6lb?
This is Fireline Ultra 8 Carrier. I am going to try Daiwa J Braid X8 next :)
I have the same thing happen on my local river, the smallmouth will swim next to me because the baitfish bite at my legs. The bass will hit them off my legs.
Lmao that has to be wild! I cracked up when those little fellas were smashing the jig right by me :)
Nice Setup UL Bud!!🔥🎣
Vibe Ultralight is the best!
#Foconoultralight 🇧🇷
:) thanks man! Tight lines!
Could you do a special on fly fishing?
As time allows, I plan to get into this at some point!
Reel seat with that portuguese cork looks more comfortable than other UL rods from st croix and okuma
Honestly this is my favorite ultralight rod yet and I have tried several.
@@FishAnything Right on. I was looking to buy one. The handle and reel seat looks super comfy, bc i have all the plastic threads reel seats like the okuma or st croix. Just wish it was more moderate-fast action so the rod can bend and absorb more of trout's shakes.
Meatball madness!
If I ever release an album like all the cool kid youtubers, that will be the first song
What state r u in guy
Michigan!
Come out to Pennsylvania
What a trip!
It was so much fun!
Still using this rod a lot? Has there been anything that you don’t like about it?
It is a fantastic rod! My favorite UL for sure :)
I don't dislike anything about it but will say that it isn't the best UL for casting super light weights. Because it is so fast, it doesn't sling a tiny jig out there the way some of the softer rods do.
Do you voiceover your videos in Post Production?
No haha that sounds like way too much work. Plus there is no way I could be as excited as I am in post-production. I just use my GoPro audio.
@@FishAnything Wow, the audio quality sounds like post production. That's pretty awesome..
Try the Capung 662 Gen 2
Is this available domestic anywhere?
@@FishAnything I have not seen it yet unfortunately.
Was on your live stream last night on IG. Was talking about Rock bass on there. That place was loaded with them. Those spawning colors look awesome.
Yeah the black lines on their fins were super neat! And thanks for hanging out on IG Live that was a blast!
Try the phenix exlier bad ass rod
Definitely looking into the Phenix lineup!
👍
I do t think it sacrifices big fish. I’ve caught a 28” Rainbow trout with my ultralight gear.
Im buying this rod.
You won’t regret it. Still my favorite!
So why doesn't it have an handle to speak of?
Not sure what you are referring to?
You're missing out on some tasty fish letting those Bluegills go.
Those are big male bluegill protecting beds. It was best to let them go this time :)
👍
Thanks as always Frank :)
Body shaming a bluegill. That was funny.
Lol to be fair that fella was a legit circle. Hilarious fish.
You might not see this comment, but what is the heaviest fish that you believe this rod can catch?
I’ve caught plenty of large fish on it. It’s all about drag settings and playing the fish properly.
If I had a spot like that my wife would have to report me missing
Haha it is a fun place to fish!
🔥🔥
:)
You lost me at miracle whip. #nevermeetyourheros
Rocko's
Always fun :)
Bro, you’ve admitted to some embarrassing things in the past…… but miracle whip, that’s just too far.
Lol to be fair I also like your standard mayo. But yeah sometimes you just gotta have that tangy factor.
...feeding near the TOP of the SURFACE...???!!!??? W.T.F.?
You just learned something without knowing it. You are fishing with a trout rod that was designed by bass fisherman and you are fishing with it like a bass fisherman.
Miracle wippppped. Gay!!!!
