I really love Zeke. He really puts a great deal of thought into his picks. I was so shocked when he put CP2077 as his #2. He usually doesn’t like open world games. Can’t wait to play it in a year

I did enjoy it, but it needed another year to flesh out the systems, put in barbershop, more clothing options, bug fixes, etc. I feel for the 90% of the people at CDPR who must have been so frustrated that the higher ups where insisting that the game release, while so many of them knew it wasn't ready.
Zeke is such a treasure. Yes he is a sticky and furry treasure but that only enhances his value.
Genius takes like, "When people don't like the story they'll try to be smart and say the writing is bad." Like, as though the story was only made up of jungian images or something and didn't come from the writer.
I just wanted to say that I always appreciate you guys putting together these lists. I know these often stir up some people and that can be a pain in the ass. From the people who think they know what you like better than you do yourself, to the people who believe they have art down to a science, and can objectively determine the best games of the year.
I am very much looking forward to playing Spiritfarer, because the way Zeke describes it makes it sound right up my alley. Hades has been getting a lot of praise and Supergiant's Transistor is one of my favorite games, so I need to get around to playing that. Finally, the conversation around The Last of Us 2 is so fiery that there must be something there. Maybe with some of the other Sony ports, it too will be ported to PC and I can give it a go.

Agreed. The one thing I neglected to add to my other comment was the relentless cutting off and talking over of Zeke all year. He rarely, if ever, gets anywhere near a third of the airtime.

Firstly, Happy New Year to the hosts, Barry, all the Mods, Artists, fans and everyone else that contributes to the show.
On another topic, DMCA is at least able to be worked around (with a lot of extra burden and pain to broadcasters, for sure, but it can be done).
The proposed repeal of Section 230 though basically makes DMCA stuff look like paradise. It would essentially make the concept of Twitch a completely unviable business model, both for the Company, and individual streamers who could all then be held personally or collectively liable for content posted or broadcast on their channels.
That's es[ecially true when considering how exponetially worse the ramificarions ofTwitch chat makes that equation - streamers could become held liable for inflamatory speech in their channels, no matter how quickly it was removed. Crucially, they could also be held liable for that very act of removing it at all.
Streamers should be getting proactively forewarned and fore-armed as a collective, with urgency.

Do have to say though, I really am starting to feel like an outsider compared to the general consensus of most gamers. Whilst I can see a lot of qualities in Hades, personally I thought it was good to great, but I still find it hard see the GOTY material most people do.
On the flip side, I also enjoyed TLOU2, about as much as Hades, with most of it being good to great, some parts being poor. Again, I don't see GOTY material, but when I hear so many people despising the game, I struggle to see why I never felt the same.
Maybe I just have the strangest taste in games, or have played too many games over the decades, to either not truly appreciate, or hate, as much as I used too, who knows.

Alas I have no expectations for Bloodlines 2 any more, I don't think it will even come out 2021.

Last year Cohh's best art style was crazy to me, this year it's JP. The game looked fine, best art style though? Insane to me

OK so I used your rankings here as points and then added 15 points for a game not appearing on each persons list and 11 for not appearing on the chat consensus list. subtracted 10 points for a game being someone's #1 and 5 for it being someone's 2 or 3 (both of those including chat) and the list in order is Hades and Ghost both with -1, Yakuza and FF7:R both with 23, Cyberpunk at 24, Wasteland 3 at 28, Doom at 31, Spiritfarer at 32, TLoU2 at 32, HL:A at 36, Ori 2 at 37 and There is no Game at 39. Everything else is 40+ points. If any of the gentlemen above would like to state what they'd rate a game at and it is less or more than 15th then you could move the game around in the list that. Like Cohh said TLoU2 would be between 11 and 13 which would break its tie with Spiritfarer.
Honestly based on this I'd make the overall top 10: Hades, Ghost, Yakuza, FF7:R, Wasteland 3, Doom, TLoU2, Spiritfarer, HL:A, Ori 2. With Cyberpunk having an honorable mention for "we all really liked the parts of this that were good but you don't deserve to actually be on the list."

I think the question I would have would be why did CD Project Red think Witcher 3ing a game or less was OK again? One would have thought they would have learned from Witcher 3 and furthermore based on the level of quality they spoke to for release after multiple delays was fascinating to watch the the monetary calculus applied. All they had to do was just speak to where it was on PS4 and bugs in general for others and be up front about it and show gameplay on the PS4. I passed on playing it, I enjoyed watching others play it, but I'm definitely not going to buy it until it gets right.

Now I know why they removed all that content. It’s because they realized the only people that were playing were the people they suckered in years ago and are incapable of putting it down, so they justified cutting out most of the game.

It's funny... either CDPR releases the game and gets shit for not finishing it, or they get so much shit for not finishing it in time and get compared to Star Citizen. The amount of hype of that game was too much to please the crowd. I do totally agree that they did a shit move with not being upfront with issues and pushing the game out when it clearly didn't work on consoles (and the lack of work on some parts of the game as well).
That being said, I didn't get much bugs, didn't have cops spawning around me (as I went stealth mode and didn't get any cops after me), and I went through the main story mostly with some side missions here and there... with only one crash during my 60 hour playthrough. I loved the game, and it was the game I enjoyed the most this year. And that's about it.

Cyberpunk 2077 is my #1 game despite all the controversy. It has broken bits, sure, but its in a tier of its own IMO.

Probably mine as well, I haven't really played many new games this year. It's certainly a broken mess but there's something about Night City that keeps pulling me back in.

230 hours into CP2077 and with all the stuff that's lacking from it, it's still fun. My time is mostly spent in photomode though. I can understand where Zeke is coming from.
I rate this game of the year show a 4 out of 10. There are sparks of brilliance in the dark ocean of primitive game choices in this show. Nice effort.

OK so in defense of the community vote for sound design being Hades. Go back and listen to the sound effects that happen as you start conversations with the Olympian gods. Dionysus in particular comes to mind that drunken laugh that plays as he comes up on the screen is pure perfection.
Okay, but like take the sound design of a game like TLOU 2 for example, where the water makes different sounds depending on how deep it is or what object it's interacting with. Or how the breathing and heart beat changes depending on duration of running and the action taking place (like being in stealth, getting discovered, or experiencing vertigo) and then transitioning into different states. The complexity and depth is just not really comparable to something like Hades.
Hades is a great game and all, but I think the praise for every single thing about it is becoming a meme at this point.
@@UnlistedAgain So don't get me wrong when I say this but to say there's no comparison is overhyping the sound design in TLOU 2 a bit an underestimating the sound design in Hades. Mind you I definitely think there are things the community voted it number 1 in that it likely doesn't deserve and I probably would still give the award to TLOU 2 but there is a surprising amount of depth in Hades sound design for the kind of game it is. Does it hold up to the breadth of great sound design in TLOU2 no not really I was just trying to make the point that unlike in some areas it being given the award isn't laughable.

To any people that are saying that TW3 was as bad as CP77 on release: On release TW3's score on Steam was 94% (now it is 98%). Cyberpunk's score is 79%.
Can't believe there's idiots who think Cohh doesn't speak his mind truthfully. Dude is basically a major character in the game with how much content is aimed at his character and he still rips into how bad CP77 was. Like his comparison of how the Wanted system is like a college students first attempt at designing AI is pretty spot on.
I had to put down the witcher 3 due to game breaking bugs and pick it up later after it was fixed. I've put more time into Cyberpunk than TW3 so far and haven't personally experienced anything that's literally keeping me from progressing the game.
Cyberpunk has more fundamental issues, but The Witcher 3 had major technical issues, that were admittedly resolved very handedly.
Your example is bad imo. The Witcher 3 didn't have the hype that CP2077 had. People that don't even like these types of games were jumping on the hype train. There is definitely a certain level of bandwagoning with CP2077 comparatively. Not that it isn't deserved, cause it is, but I don't know why we are downplaying TW3's launch issues to prove some nonissue point.
Both games had different issues at launch. I can't speak for consoles, I don't play on them.
@@imawaffle69 I didn’t have any problems with TW3, but I had to restart CP twice. To each their own, but steam reviews suggest that for every 20 people 1 had problems with TW3 that stopped them from enjoying the game. For cyberpunk it’s 1 for every 5.

While I do think TLOU 2 is the biggest garbage that they were trying to force into gamers throats this year I still think Ashley Johnson is freaking awesome and the other voice actors involved were also top tier.
I stan Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey, their performance was incredible, there were alot of aspects about TLOU 2 i didnt like, but their performance was what carried the entire game for me, so good.

I honestly think hades is overhyped... it made my top 10 this year but its just... a roguelite... and I really can't get past that after like 10 hrs of gameplay. I'll play it more, but... I can't see it.
Also, wasteland 3 is massively overhyped. The gameplay itself was pretty good, but the story was just so bland, the main villain was just meh, and there were just a couple good characters in the entire game, don't get the hype at all.
I don't like bad ending stories, I want it to be hard then end up good!

hades is so boring for me, it barely have any story to make you want to continue in the beginning , and on the top of that, it make you repeating the same thing again and again and again...especially if you suck at the game...but that's just me. i only tried because so many people said it's great...but really, every game depend personally whether you like i or not..

It's still so funny how people are SO sure LOU 2 is just "bad writing, bad pacing, bad game-play", they go out of their way to defend their subjective opinion like it's a fact.

This is made by a huge amount of gamers who could anonimously vote, and Hades got it in a landslide victory. even full-time gamers didnt put it in the top. What does that tell you? If the majority here thought that game was the best they would've voted for it, there were no repurcussions for it.

I wish I could fully agree with Cohh's takes on Cyberpunk. He brings up some pretty great points but shifiting the blame solely on the "suits" is a bit short sighted IMO. I have the feeling that this game might have suffered from a similar problem as Anthem did as in: the direction wasn't great and they weren't fully sure what they're gonna make. People bring up the 8 years LUL comment a lot but from what is in the game I think its fair to say that, similar to Anthem, a lot of the time they didn't actually know what the main gameplay focus would be and then they just threw features at it that weren't well thought out or developed in the end. While I do agree that corporate bullshit has much to do with it, I also think that it might have been misdirected without a clear vision.
What I also don't quite agree with it that CP has 'game of the decade' material in it. Cohh has said this quite a lot but never really said what exactly that would be? Fair if he thinks the story is it. The gameplay? Not so sure about that. That is a hard point to argue though. I disagree strongly with Cohhs opinion on this but if he feels that way, that's fine

They started working on the game in 2016. So even if they worked all the time it's 4 years not 8.

The 8 years were a bit besides the point and what I meant to target with that was the people saying "8 years LUL" as a meme in chat as reaction to the state of the game, which I find a bit ridiculous.

The direction was fine. The writing was bad period. There's a way to get from point A to point B in a thoughtful manner. TLOU2 was not thoughtful.

I get that people have different opinion & that's fine. But I'm starting to think that we gamers deserve buggy games & broken promises. CDPR lied to the consumers, put their employees in a tough position & they fully knew what they were doing. Nonetheless Cyberpunk 2077 is on the Game of the Year lists.
I'll wait until CP2077 is actually done and then I'll pirate it. That sucks for the devs that work on it, they deserve better. But the leadership of CD Project have shown that only money matters so they getting none of mine even if they fix their game down the line. Gotta train these corporate dogs that fixing it later is not acceptable.
Seriously, not just cp2077 but gaming in general gets away with promising the moon and barely delivering a broken pebble so often it's crazy. No other industry would get away with half the gaming industry does.
Like take EA their CEO's *know* that they have gambling in their games and they *know* that they are marketing and selling this to kids. If any other market had tried that they would be in so much trouble.
I know it sucks when you have to miss out on a good game but we're going to be stuck with this behavior unless we do the only thing they care about and that is take away the money. Don't buy it, pirate it can't pirate it just play something else.

@@PapBek Ohh yes, my logic fails that I expect a corporation to actually release what they have been marketing.
The reason I'm pirating it even after they fix it is exactly because I am sick and tired of this "We'll fix it late, promise!" mentality that is rife in the gaming industry.
No other industry would get away with this type of customer abuse.
This goes double for a company that has been marketing themselves as "the good guys" for years with specific marketing that this game would not be released until it was done.
So I actually think my logic is quite solid.
If CDPR wants me to buy their next game, because I'm never buying CP2077, they will have to release a product that at minimum matches what they promised.
It's less of a case that everyone loves Hades, and more of the folks that like it are loud and many. Frankly, that constant cry for Hades, all it just does is put me off further and further away from it.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but I legitimately look at TLOU2 and see almost no redeeming qualities.
The gameplay is boring, the graphics are great, but they're also boring because it's just realism. The story is just poorly done and makes no damn sense. The only good thing about it in my eyes is the accessibility features, that's it.

When I hear Cohh blaming the investors I have to ask, does he understand how one gets an investors money? CDPR promised a game to be built and released in 8 years (standard game dev time is 2-5) to get the investors money. CDPR made that deal. And they still delayed the game three times. You don't get mad at a bank when someone fails to repay a loan. You get mad at the one who took out the loan in the first fucking place. This was entirely CDPR's fault. From a management team that hid shit and crunched their employees to a marketing team which went overboard with hype to a dev team that promised to make a game they had zero experience making before. This was CDPR's fault in every angle. Cohh is so blinded by bias it is impressive. CDPR is not an indie darling of two dudes and a dream anymore nor have they been one for some time now. CDPR is a company worth billions. Time to hold them to a higher standard.
Cyberpunk didn't start pre-production until 2016, after the last expansion of Witcher 3.

I agree. Don't get me wrong Hades is a good game however I didn't understand why it got the first place so many times. I'm not a big fan of that genre tho, so that might explain it.
Hades is not overrated ... it has not even sold enough for the game it is.
The reason hades won all the player choice rewards here is because there is nothing to dislike about the game and that alone carries this game far!

There are plenty of things meant to be depressing that are done better than TLOU2. Nobody's saying that's a bad thing to do. It's just done poorly man.
I've played plenty of games that make me feel uncomfortable, and are meant to be bad and depressing. The problem, or difference, comes from when you can feel the writers behind the screen. It feels forced and shoehorned in TLoU2.
I feel like it is comparable with The Walking Dead tv show, and not just because apocalypse. They hit a point where they were pushing a narrative for the sake of pushing a narrative, and you can feel it while playing/watching.
I think that's where the devisevness comes from. You either feel that, or you don't. But when the characters start making decisions that don't fit the character or situation to push the story, or they do something that you literally were trying to make them NOT do, I find it frustrating that people think that is good story telling. I can understand, but it's still frustrating.
There are a lot of bad takes on lou2 that attack the game for stupid reasons, but I don't think Cohh is wrong.
Coh being the only human being on the terrible narrative of Last of Us 2 was really surprising to me. Kind of a downer but hey everyone is entitled to their opinions.
cyberbug 2076 shows that devs like CDPR are extremely overrated. they still have yet to make a single game with actual good gameplay. trash gunplay, trash melee combat, outdated open world, terrible AI, terrible police system, shallow skills/perks system. the gameplay is so terrible.

I wouldn't hit so hard, but totally agree. I got wrapped in the hype of Witcher 3 and stopped after 15 hours cuz the game-play was so fking boring to me. They really need to work on their game-play. Their story aspect is on point though but I can only assume.

Not that you need to know this, or probably even care, but I wanted to share my thoughts here. Between the launch of the new intro, JPs controversy around Roll Play, the cringe-worthy episode with Troy Baker, the ham-fisted BLM coverage, the two episodes with the privileged, super-rich, Mike Shinoda, and now this mainstream, largely bland GOTY episode, 2020 marks the year when Dropped Frames transitioned from representing gamers to feeling mostly like a marketing wing of the corporate-dominated gaming business; you guys have lost me this year, and it sincerely pains me to say that. I’ve watched every episode for the last 5 years, have appreciated your insights and your virtual company, but unfortunately times change, you guys no longer represent me or my attitude towards gaming and the gaming industry. I’m sad that I won’t be following you going forward but didn't want to just drop out without thanking you for some good memories. I hope you and your families remain happy and healthy throughout 2021 and beyond. I continue to wish you all the best of luck going forward.

Since there seems to be some confusion, perhaps foolishly, I thought I'd try to clarify my position here. I have watched Dropped Frames more or less since it started and I enjoyed hearing JP, Cohh, and Zeke share their thoughts on games. However, as the years have rolled on and the community has become increasingly insular (primarily quite wealthy white older millennials), I was getting less and less enjoyment from watching the show. Given how the events of this year's shows played out (examples above) and in particular how this year's list of top games is virtually identical to IGN or any other mainstream gaming media outlet, I've decided that I'm just not that interested in the show any longer. I wish JP, Cohh, and Zeke the best going forward.
I really love Zeke. He really puts a great deal of thought into his picks. I was so shocked when he put CP2077 as his #2. He usually doesn’t like open world games. Can’t wait to play it in a year
