In US you must EARN time off and don't receive it because you have a pulse. I get 9 weeks paid off including holidays after 20 years with more coming when I hit 25 years. In Europe a person can get hired and take off for vacation and never come back. I am told this happens all the time. The employer has to pay them for absolutely zero loyality, no significant contribution to the business, and no seniority. That is dumb as dirt and partly why European innovation is so low. In the US you receive usually 5 holidays off because you're a human being and the rest you must earn but actually contributing to society.
Vacation days totally depends on your employer. The longer you work for a company, the more vacation/sick days you earn. I was lucky to have 4 weeks plus all the federal holidays (12) when i retired. That was plenty of days off. The problem isn't number of days off, it's affordability of taking a vacation. Unless you stay home, there are costs to travel the country, both by car or by plane. I live the southwest so everything is far!

C'mon now...giving 3-4 weeks of guaranteed payed vacation days to workers would cut into the executives' salaries and bonuses. Many of them don't even want to pay their employees enough to live a financially secure life. They'd rather outsource work to people in other countries whom they can pay less and skip out on social security and heath insurance contributions. But, hey, if we reduce taxes for the billionaire business owners the money they save on taxes will trickle down to the workers right? The workers in what country?🤔
Funny thing about guns in the US and how often you might see a regular civilian with one. A foreigner might think there will be evidence of guns all over the place. As though they are an inescapable part of daily life. Most definitely not true. In nearly 50years I have never seen a civilian carrying a gun. I have never even given a second thought, while in a crowd of people on the street, about who might be armed. It doesn't even cross my mind.

Great topic and discussion. While I think the presentation was accurate in general terms, these cultural differences can vary from state to state. I legally bought by first beer at the age of 18 in North Carolina but the state law changed to 21 about a year later. At 20 years old I was a Green Beret ready to deploy to combat, jumping out of planes in the middle of the night and participating in training missions in foreign countries but couldn't legally buy a beer in some states. I started a new job in May and only have 32 hours of sick/vacation days until next May. I have already used those hours with an emergency hospitalization in July and COVID in September. It's flu season now, and so many in my office were out sick, including myself. But I have no more time off and went to work sick - I need my paycheck. I don't have an hour off until next year. We don't WANT to work like we do, but many of us don't have a choice.
Companies give vacation days and sick days, but they are earned. The employee must earn those days because bosses are not responsible for their employees lifestyles. Good employees get more perks and pay. Every job I have had as an adult came with a probationary period. If I broke any of the office rules within the first 6 to 9 months, I could be fired on the spot. Even the union could not safe me. One boss demand that everyone be in the office at their desks at 9 am sharp. If you were late, you could be fired. He used to say that he drove an hour to each day to arrive on time and everyone else in the office lived much closer than he did, so there weren't any excuses for being. This was even true during the many NY snowstorms in Winter from December to March. That boss was fair but very tough until you earned his trust.

A few thoughts. Growing up in Texas (and all over the south) in the 1960s, a large percentage of the vehicles were pickup trucks. And most pickup trucks had a rifle rack, with a 22 and a shotgun in the rear window. This was ubiquitous and perfectly normal, urban and rural, at grocery stores, shopping centers, offices, etc. In the early 1970s people started breaking into trucks and stealing the guns. The custom quickly died. In the early 1960s people were more conservative and respectful of the flag. I think a lot of the change came during the counterculture and Vietnam War protests in the very late 1960s and early 70s. Eighteen was the legal age for alcohol in the 1970s. Before that, when I was about 12 to 17, my family would vacation somewhere in Mexico every couple of years where there were no age restrictions on alcohol at that time. My parents would sometimes take my sister and I to a bar or club to hear music and let us order a margarita, Kahlua or something. That was always a big deal and heady stuff back then.
Most people do have insurance thru their employer and the co pay or prememim depends on company I've always had good insurance and PTO. I am salaried person When I did work retail or lower paying it was more sparse. Alor of companies offered collect benefits packages. Also as long as you worked almost all Americans at 62 go on Medicaire and it's when you are old is when you use the most We also have full disability if you can't work and Medicaid which is insurance if you fall into poverty. There are those who fall in gaps but most videos don't mention all the policies we do have
I've seen the way some Brits have taken down the Union Jack and just let it fall to the ground or even let it touch the ground when saluting the King. Most Americans (I say most because there are still some Americans that would stand or burn "old glory") would lose their shit to see the American flag touch the ground in any matter. I worked for a local school district for thirty- five years. I got four weeks' vacation. I could use it however I wished. One day a week or all at once. I got ten sick days per year that accumulated. Two personal days per year that did not accumulate. When I retired, I was paid for my unused sick days. Healthcare furnished by the school district for me and my family was top shelf. One thing I received from my employment which I believe is priceless, is a pension. Something that has become sadly a rare thing in the US. Now it is just a 401K.

When I went out on Disability after working 32 years I was receiving 5 weeks paid vacation, 10 days paid sick leave, about 12 miscellaneous paid holidays, including paid time off for my birthday. For disability we had 6 to 8 weeks at 100% paid time off for childbirth & most surgeries. For the first 6 weeks of sick leave we received 100% disability pay.. After 6 weeks of being on disability the pay dropped to 66 2/3%. I bought my health Insurance thru company payroll, and we were able to include dental, vision & hearing for additional cost.
When I had a job that gave me decent leave, I often would lose leave or would use it a day here and a day there instead of for an extended vacation time. It would just mean a mess for me when I got back. I also (although it really is required by my employer) don’t usually use my breaks and lunch on my current job because it’s just going to put me behind and I will have to spend time fixing everything that was screwed up while I stepped away. I really don’t have time for that. I admit I am a little compulsive, but I get the job done and it’s important to me.

Here in Maine, a family proposed to erect "Flagpole of Freedom Park". At a cost of a billion dollars and would be higher than the Empire State Building. So far the local town has rejected the project and it is likely doomed. Gun culture is insane. I think working a lot is changing with the younger generations. Drinking and cigarettes might be on the way down but than craft beers and other drugs increasing.

Gun problems are almost all related to criminal activity with stolen guns or ones bought from individuals. No stronger background check will stop that.
I feel that this is a holdover not only from the Puritans but because of our Wilderness experience. The life on Rural country is sunset to sunrise to sunset. And even today there are places in America where the routine is from Sun to Sun and then at night you do the other things to make life easy. Especially in the west where you have large Farms or ranches and livestock and isolation

So it’s a car / truck culture. Would you want your kids driving and in possession of a gun and boozing it up at the same time. Or would you restrict the booze? As far as binge drinking .. that happens to over 18’s It’s very hard for under 18 to get booze and if you give it to them you can go to prison or be sued

The American passion for guns started long before we came a country. The first European to started settling here needed guns to feed themselves and protect themselves because they were living in basically a wilderness. And this is true through our first hundred years because we were spreading West and much of the country was Wilderness and the only way to feed yourself was to shoot it. We're not 100 years away from that need to have a weapon by your side because of where you lived in the wilderness

I don’t understand these people that are not taking vacation. If I remember correctly where I work after 6 months you got a week of vacation. Once you reached a year, 2 weeks of vacation. I’ve been at my job for 35 years and at 30 years you maxed out at 6 weeks of vacation. And we get 13 holidays and some sick days. As I said, I got 6 weeks vacation and I used every second of that time. If for whatever reason I missed lunch, I’m leaving early to make up for that time. Or time your lunch differently so everyone else is gone then you slip out to get a few more minutes. After 35 years, I know all the tricks!
I started working in 1980 and retired in 2017 from the same company , before I retired I had 10 weeks of vacation, all holidays were paid, the company paid 80% of my monthly healthcare premium, had both short and long term disability leave, and every five years ,we got a five year bonus check
I live in the US and own about 30 guns but not even one bullet. I'm not interested in shooting guns. Back in Japan, I used to collect replica guns and now that I'm in the US, I own real guns since I can.
We don’t get a lot of paid time off in the states, but I think opinions about Americans not taking advantage of their paid time off is bogus. I refuse to believe those statistics. I don’t know a single person who didn’t take all the vacation time coming to him. The only reason they wouldn’t is to earn DOUBLE money for those weeks, which most companies don’t allow anyway. The only factor which MIGHT come into play with those statistics I don’t trust is sick time. If you get 5 or 10 paid sick days a year…and you don’t get sick…many people won’t lie and take those days off.
For 13 years I worked for an institution in Houston, TX with about 350-400 employees and many people there took few, if any, of their paid vacation days. Many of them seem to think they were somehow better employees and acted a little smug about it. I took all my days off, often traveled, and thought those employees who didn’t were a little foolish and wasting life’s opportunities.
As an openly US gay male, there are now federal laws which protect our LGBT community in terms of serving in the military, the right to marry, and in employment and housing. The times, they are indeed changing.

I own five- three flintlocks and a pair of 1873 Colt Peacemakers. The flintlocks are for Living History and the Colts are for Cowboy Action Shooting and self defense.

You go on Medicare at age 65. 62 is when you can take SS at a reduced rate.

About guns in the US, It is important to remember that not everyone feels the same way about them, most people don't own them, and a majority of the people want stricter laws regulating ownership.

Why should people who don’t want to own guns have any say over those people who do?

Richard I want the 2nd amendment repealed! I hate the fact that the us is a gun nut country it's unnecessary! I've 2x in safe areas mid day one stranger shot at me the other just threatened! The shooter wasn't caught !
I don’t understand these people that are not taking vacation. If I remember correctly where I work after 6 months you got a week of vacation. Once you reached a year, 2 weeks of vacation. I’ve been at my job for 35 years and at 30 years you maxed out at 6 weeks of vacation. And we get 13 holidays and some sick days. As I said, I got 6 weeks vacation and I used every second of that time. If for whatever reason I missed lunch, I’m leaving early to make up for that time. Or time your lunch differently so everyone else is gone then you slip out to get a few more minutes. After 35 years, I know all the tricks!
Some of us can use unused vacation and sick days towards an early retirement.
I started working in 1980 and retired in 2017 from the same company , before I retired I had 10 weeks of vacation, all holidays were paid, the company paid 80% of my monthly healthcare premium, had both short and long term disability leave, and every five years ,we got a five year bonus check
I live in the US and own about 30 guns but not even one bullet. I'm not interested in shooting guns. Back in Japan, I used to collect replica guns and now that I'm in the US, I own real guns since I can.
We don’t get a lot of paid time off in the states, but I think opinions about Americans not taking advantage of their paid time off is bogus. I refuse to believe those statistics.
I don’t know a single person who didn’t take all the vacation time coming to him. The only reason they wouldn’t is to earn DOUBLE money for those weeks, which most companies don’t allow anyway.
The only factor which MIGHT come into play with those statistics I don’t trust is sick time. If you get 5 or 10 paid sick days a year…and you don’t get sick…many people won’t lie and take those days off.
For 13 years I worked for an institution in Houston, TX with about 350-400 employees and many people there took few, if any, of their paid vacation days. Many of them seem to think they were somehow better employees and acted a little smug about it. I took all my days off, often traveled, and thought those employees who didn’t were a little foolish and wasting life’s opportunities.
As an openly US gay male, there are now federal laws which protect our LGBT community in terms of serving in the military, the right to marry, and in employment and housing. The times, they are indeed changing.

I heard a gun instructor once say that if you pull a gun on somebody, A private citizen doing this, be prepared to shoot And possibly kill that person part person. Very sobering thought... I enjoyed this video I've never seen it before And your comments. I've I've been where they have open carry laws for guns And it was really disconcerting for me

I own five- three flintlocks and a pair of 1873 Colt Peacemakers. The flintlocks are for Living History and the Colts are for Cowboy Action Shooting and self defense.
