    How to turn your 10gal into a 5

    You could keep the fluval substrate in media bags as well. and just cap the lot with gravel or sand.

    I use it in my canister filter the lava rock . Works great to filter water and grow plants.

    Nice setup! I just used lava rock on a 35gal tank (cost $8) and I still have extra. I think I’m guna bag it like this for some already established bare bottom tanks I have. I like the mixed gravel/soil on top. Once it grows in with plants the varying colors will look super natural. Plus it’s harder to see the poop some people are complaining about (aka plant food) lol. Keep on keeping on!

    Great Demonstration I too have done something similar and has worked well with it and plan on doing it again in the future...I didn't bag it though I like that idea 👍

    I accidentally ordered smaller sized lava rocks. The ones that arrived wouldnt look good in my land scape, but i still wanted to use them to keep hold of beneficial bacteria and was looking for something to put underneath the aquasoil for depth for a cheaper price. Thanks!

    This is why I never had gravel, in my tanks. Just glue gravel to your plants, with aquarium glue, so they stay anchored. Your tank will be so easy to keep clean!!!!

      That works with some plants, but some need to be planted.

      And your tanks also looked like an eyesore also, bare bottom tanks arent even worth filling with water

    As a low-tech enthusiast, this seems wildly unnecessary. Gimme dirt and sand caps all day.

      Dirt substrate is great, I use them in several of my builds. But there are other options that work great too, I’m all about exploring the options. There are many substrate combinations that can grow plants successfully!

      I think if the tank is no filter tank... This setup will be great because lava rocks will house the benefital bacteria for filtering Amonia and Nitrite 👌🏼 correct me if I'm wrong guys?

  • @justindozak75
    @justindozak75 Рік тому +3

    Or you can use a much cheaper and better option use a soil base and two inches of sand thus not only giving more space for bacteria to grow but also allow plants to thrive better and longer in the end providing a natural aquarium that sustains itself

    When a substrate like this is used, a significant amount of fish poop gets trapped. I am a beginner and just hate the fact that fish poop is still there in the tank. I have switched back to barebottom coz i like to completely clean fish poop. I need guidance on this from an experienced fish keeper.

      Have you ever seen a "sterile" environment in nature...?
      Do you think your fish like a bare bottom...? They don't.
      Good fish keepers care about the health and happiness of their fish/shrimp...
      Fish poop is is FOOD for shrimp snails and many micro-organisms...
      Plus its fertilizer for plants...
      A "dirty" tank with CLEAN water is a good and healthy tank...!

      One of my goals is having an ecosystem in the aquarium. I have found that having a deep substrate, scavengers like snails, Cory catfish, etc and lots of plants can all work together to break down waste and cycle nutrients.

      @2869may Рік тому

      @@plantlifeproject Cool, just be sure none of your fish are diggers..!
      (I'm sure you know you can't use a substrate that allows much flow at all)
