    I know this an old video, but I gotta say 2 things, Love the channel name, and this last couple weeks I've decided that out of the 3 species of fish I catch the most (browns, rainbows, and white) I enjoy the whites the most, and the browns the least. Not sure how browns became THE fly trout. Whites (and rainbows) run and fight harder. I'm looking for ways to specifically target whites. which flies to use and how to find them.

      Thanks for commenting! The rig I use for whitefish is a simple 2 fly euro rig with a stonefly nymph on top of a mayfly nymph (about 18 inches apart). That rig will catch them until my arm is sore. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Great video. I went out a few days ago specifically looking for these guys and took whatever else came my way. Day 1, along with a bunch of better than average rockies came a beautiful brown trout. Second day not as productive as the first but scored a massive 3+ pound rocky. All taken on a #10 bead head pheasant tail and released to continue on their spawning run.

    What size stone fly nymph are you using? The whitefish where I'm at will even hit a dry fly on occasion so i know if i target them I'll be able to get my boy on some.

    • @MidLifeFlysis
      @MidLifeFlysis  Рік тому

      I use anywhere from size 6-10. They aren’t picky on size, just pattern. I hope your boy gets a big one….or many big ones!

      Perfect, thank you for the info and video of course. We have native cutthroat, rainbows and brookies that we always fish for but it's always fun changing it up.

    the rocky mountain bonefish. Although I don't target them exclusively. They have kept me away from the old skunk a time or two! Summer can't come soon enough, a guy can only tie flies for so long.

    I'm with you, I like them. I suppose it's the warmwater equivalent to Bluegill - which "annoy" some flyrodders when targeting bass... but I love a good bluegill take! Guess it's a Blessing
    ..but I never cared much if it wasn't my target species! Great video.

    Here is a great DIY alternative to the magnetic net release. Get a 4' length of your favorite rope. Tie one end to your net handle. Tie a loop in the other end and feed your wading belt through that. Throw the net over your shoulder and your good to go, no more lost nets!

    • @MidLifeFlysis
      @MidLifeFlysis  5 років тому +1

      trout stalker thanks for watching! My advice would be get deep. This time of year they’re hunkered down. So put some split shot on and use a euro setup with a long leader. Any small fly like a zebra midge will be good. Also be sure to check your regulations. Most rivers are still closed here in Alberta and don’t open until April 1.

      Yeah I think I bought a couple of those same reels. Seem to be working pretty good so far, although the sizes seem off. Ended up using the 7/8 size for my 6-weight and a 9/10 for my 8-weight. Cheers

  • @BAHornquist
    @BAHornquist 4 роки тому

    How do you know they bite? You just keep tension the whole way and feel em out? Do you hook up in bottom a lot? I'm new to nymphing so still trying to figure it out

    • @MidLifeFlysis
      @MidLifeFlysis  4 роки тому +1

      BAHornquist actually it’s a bit by touch and a bit visual. You have to keep tension in the line yes, that is where the name tight line nymphing comes from. Most takes you can feel, but you also have to watch the line, if it hesitates or wiggles it’s a strike. You will hang up on the bottom a bit, most of the time your nymph is ticking along the bottom or just above it. With practice you get a feel for the correct depth. Hope this helps! Stay healthy!
