gifford said he had arrived with evil the day of the jump, as soon as evil saw the ramp and buses he said "hell, i cant jump that far" he knew he was gonna wipe out, did the jump anyway, balls like church bells.

And what amazes me is that Evel Knievel was jumping a piece of lead. Harleys just are not built to jump. People like Ryan Capes, who jumped nearly 400 feet, jump bikes built for jumping. I wish Knievel was alive to see these guys doing backflips in midair and Robbie Maddison’s New Year’s Eve jump in Las Vegas back in 2008. Would love to hear Knievels comments about these guys.

As kid in the 70s EVEL WAS MY HERO

    • @nixworld767

I was a kid in the 70's also. He inspired me so much that I decided I would establish an unbreakable record in my neighborhood for the longest Stingray bike jump...ever. Ramp to ramp, maybe 20 feet. With the neighborhood kids watching i hauled ass up the ramp, got airborne, and completely flipped upside down, and landed flat on my back beyond the ramp. No helmet. I laid there in agony with my entire backside scraped raw from the asphalt slide. Like Evel in this video....."ladies and gentlemen, you will never see me jump again". I'm 61 now. Was true to my word.

@@nixworld767 I'm right there with ya, pal... Only I didn't do a ramp jump... I rode my Stingray off a WALL ...The wall was only 3 feet high, but I did it w/o a helmet... Busted my head and gave myself a concussion 😖... End of story.

This is amazing footage. I was at Wembly Stadium as a teenager watching what turned out to be Evel's only UK appearance. Evel was cool, still is cool and demonstrates what it is to be a decent man. Thanks for sharing this footage, it brings back happy memories of me being taken to Wembly by my mum and dad to watch my hero. I will never forget that when he made the jump my mum said "I can't watch" and covered her eyes? Oh well, that was my mum. Thanks again for the happy memory.

  • @RockfrdDrm

He actually cleared the distance, but the suspension on those old Harley's he used couldn't take that kind of impact. You see him holding on to the bike so he won't be thrown from it. Only bad thing is it landed right on top of him, and it was still running. Listen to when the guy picks up the bike after he lands, it's still going. Great bike, but a bad design for that time.

Saw Evel Knievel in Detroit in 1972 at motorcycle show State Fair Coliseum. He did one of those jumps where he comes from way up un the stands down to the ground then right back up the ramp, jump the busses, down the other ramp and have to go through narrow doorway right after the ramp. THAT was the crazy part of it all.
Three day show, he did three jumps. I was there all three days with bike show in the back. When he was preparing for the jumps and bypassing the ramps getting his speed tuned in, he would go to the back and turn around. When he turned around he would always stand on the seat and ride a wheel stand on the seat back up front.
First two jumps I was in back but on last jump we went into the coliseum to watch. He made the jump okay but dumped it on the down ramp and bike slid more to the right and hit the doors. They picked him up and brought him back up to the center so he could talk to everybody some more then away he went. He was pretty busted up to begin with. He was walking with a cane before he started.
You watch others do jumps they look like they are going to fly away, he went very fast and not very high. He used a much heavier bike than anybody would use today.
    .

Believe it or not, if FedEx had been around back then he would’ve made it. Evel has said that when he saw how far it was he knew he might be short on landing but also knew Harley-Davidson couldn’t get the parts to him fast enough to change the bike’s gearing. So he went ahead with the jump rather than disappoint 80K fans

I remember reading an article about his mechanic telling him that the gearbox in his Harley was not tall enough to reach the top speed he needed to clear the buses.
    Evil knievel replied,
"Just look at the crowd, People have paid good money to see me jump, The show must go on"
He continued to attempt the jump, knowing he was going to crash, due to the lack of top speed.
Legend is an understatement in regards to Evil knievel.

We all liked him as a kid but looking back he just crashed a lot and when not badly hurt just played to the hype. I wish he had accepted Eddie kidds challenge of a jump off but evel wouldn't accept. His son Robbie did in later years and cheated by adding a piece of extra ramp halfway through but Eddie beat him anyway. All good jumpers but afraid the father and son just lived off the hype I think. Eddie Kidd was the best ever and still a fighter ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼

SPPD Unit A475, Knievel jumped again in Ohio over 14 buses on Oct. 25, 1975. You can watch it here - ua-cam.com/video/ratqB20diYE/v-deo.html. He hit the safety ramp covering the last bus, but managed to stay on the bike...that was his last big jump. He jumped again after that but not as far. By 1976 his popularity seem to be fading fast.

In the movie he supposedly had it changed to 14 buses ? Why do they have to lie in movies all the time ? Pretty sure he crashes here ! And has Frank Gifford pick him up so he can walk and talk to the fans , we shall see , I’m also pretty sure he knew he wasn’t gonna make it , but did it anyway!
