APMAs 2014: Bring Me The Horizon's Oli Sykes wins Album Of The Year with speech about his addiction

- Monday night (July 21, 2014) in Cleveland, Bring Me The Horizon had a very successful run at the inaugural AP Music Awards, taking home two awards-one for Best International Band and one for Best Album (Sempiternal). But when frontman Oli Sykes came onstage to accept the award for Best Album, he was ready to share a bit more than your typical acceptance speech. Sykes publicly admitted to his drug addiction for the first time.
“I wanna say something that I never thought I’d actually talk about,” he said, “Before we wrote Sempiternal, I was a fucking drug addict. I was addicted to a drug called ketamine. I was on it for years, and I was fucked off my head. My band wanted to kill me. My parents wanted to kill me. My fucking brother wanted to kill me. Everyone wanted to kill me. But they didn’t-they stood by me. They supported me through all that shit, and we wrote Sempiternal because of it.”
Noticeably nervous, the BMTH frontman then went on to explain his time spent in rehab and the support he received from his family, bandmates and fans.
“No one fucking knows this, but I went to rehab for a month, and through that time, you guys had no fucking idea that I was in rehab. But you were sending me letters. You were sending me text messages. You were sending me fucking emails. When I got out of that rehab, I didn’t wanna fucking scream anymore; I wanted to sing it through the rooftops, and it’s all thanks to you. So thank you very much.”

Wow. I can only imagine how hard that must've been for him to admit that. That takes guts. I know oli has struggled with mental problems a lot and I always knew what sempiternals overall themes about but didn't realise drugs were a major part. I knew he was on a bit of drugs but didn't know it was that bad and linked to his mental illnesses. The whole album makes even more sense now. But most definitely the song "Hospital for souls" that song makes so much more sense now that oli has come out.
Sleepwalking and Can You Feel My Heart especially make more sense too

He looked terrified at the beggining he didn't even notice when (sorry I don't know his name, could someone tell me?) The guy from We Came As Romans squeezed his shoulders as a congrats. It's tough admitting that shit to one person, much less a whole crowd. Especially since I've had some problems with disassociatives, too. Like, trying to convey why you purposefully dull your sense of self is hard, because it comes from such a deep pit of self loathing and pain. It's tough to let people see that shit.

When I saw this during live television I cried because I realized something. When I became a fan of bmth Oliver was so skinny and unhappy, he did every drug imagineable. I still remember him saying, "legalize lsd". Then things got quiet for awhile and I wondered what happened. That's when I realized he was really in rehab.

when you're sad or angry people tend to do stupid things, or don't things through. His mindset was completely out of whack- so at least his negatives feelings, or at least hope are now out of the way.

It's amazing how much I've seen this band progress. I've loved them since I was 13 when they barely released Suicide Season. I'm now in college and they are still my favorite band. I'm glad they're finally getting the recognition they deserve and I'm happy Sempiternal won this award since it was such a badass album. BMTH's best album to this date, no doubt. Hopefully I'll be seeing them again when they tour with ADTR and Chiodos!

Bands change their sound to keep up with trends, because they can't scream anymore, or because they're bored. The fact that people here are trying to call others out for being "fake fans" for liking their new sound is absurd. We all have different tastes(some of us like heavier shit than others), but that doesn't mean someone else's opinion is less valid. I support BMTH from CYB to Drown and that doesn't make me anymore of a fan than someone who just likes Sempiternal.

People saying this didn't deserve the award. It did, it was the most well rounded album. It wasn't an album where it only has 3 hits and that's it. The album was so good that normal fans listened to the whole album. And as an artist myself, I love seeing people looking into the whole album instead of just the music video and the rehashed radio songs. BMTH deserved it.

Bmth helped me through so much and I'm so fucking happy that, in turn, we as fans got to help Oliver when he was in rehab with letters and emails telling him how much we admire and love him. Real bands save fans and real fans save bands.He is so dedicated and awesome for this. Lifting himself up like that wasn't easy.

I come back to this regularly, but never added anything to the comments over the last decade. And,
I’ve got to agree with you: some of the most depressive stuff is upvoted the highest, meanwhile, I also prefer the 3 paragraph comments speaking to Oli’s character.
If it makes you feel any better? Years ago, I added Genius annotations which cite this -among other things - on, “Chelsea Smile,” “Alligator Blood,” and another I can’t recall, speaking to Oli’s character and something he’d hinted at for years. It’s been awesome watching others latch on, and annotate, “Sleepwalking,” since then (which is a track I cited in my analysis/dissertation/annotation on the other tracks I mentioned).
Now, we all know what his, “secret,” was. As he said, “I’m buried and breathing in regret,” I mean, the music video for, “It Never Ends,” hits completely different after this speech.
Thank you for mentioning this and pointing it out. It was one of the most seminal BMTH moments, and the top voted comments are pretty damn depressing.
Like.. you don’t have to be a philosopher all the time. You don’t have to incessantly speak with emotional intelligence. It’s cool to have fun. But, it’s a bit depressing when the only top voted, and oldest comments are merely like, “dying chicken hahaha,” you know?

I know part of me should acknowledge that BMTH is (possibly) going “mainstream” and that I should disregard it as I do towards Sleeping With Sirens and Pierce the Veil…but I simply can't. Oli is just so down to earth and straightforward about his own struggles through life. It makes their music more personal and something fans can relate to.

I listened to The Greatest Generation for a year straight beginning to end and it never got old. The lyrics are so deep.
I haven't really liked this band for a long time but from what i've heard (the sempiternal album) oli sykes is an amazing person for what he sings/screams about and the rest of the band are amazing too for what they do with the guitars the drums etc this speech was very touching to hear and oli is a strong man who didn't let his addict take over him I love BMTH
Cannot stand him and I dislike his band a lot of the time, but that takes some guts to admit that he went into rehab and tried to come out of the other side positively, and clearly he did. Good on him for admitting that, I've gained a little more respect for him now. (I do struggle to not melt at his Yorkshire accent as well.)
