    In the early 60's remember taking the bus, for a nickel, up and down Pacific Avenue with my Mom while she did her shopping. The days before UCSC and the "Pacific Avenue Mall", when the cooper house was the city court building. Looks like the 1989 earthquake changed everything quite a bit. Left Santa Cruz in 1983 to join the Navy. Didn't know how lucky I was to grow up there until after I left. Of course, could never dream of returning with the price of real estate now. Very nice video. Thanks for sharing.

      As a local since 63, I was living on the west side when the 89'er happened. It was all to obvious that it was pre-planned when Pacific avenue was demolished in 7 days. I was by the Cooper house to see the wrecking ball take the first hit.
      P.S.
      The building was not inspected, just torn down.
      Sad day
      Oh well

    I was a UCSC student between 1989-1991. Most of the Pacific Garden Mall was empty lots and rubble from the Loma Prieta earthquake while I was there. It makes my heart happy to see everything rebuilt and vibrant.

      @@WishfulWalkingVideos - your Santa Cruz videos just made my day. I watched your UCSC video last night. The path you took from Rachel Carson College to Kerr Hall and McHenry Library was one I took almost every day. Rachel Carson College (known as College Eight when I was there) was my college and the Anthropology Dept (my major) was in Kerr Hall. It was so beautiful to retrace those steps, so many moments and friends remembered. Thank you. 😊

      My Dad worked at a Safeway Store in downtown Santa Cruz I believe in 1963 ..64 it was on Lincoln st.. There was a Purity market as well across the street. Do you remember the old JC Penny’s and Leasks and Woolworth store? I haven’t been there in years. Santa Cruz was awesome back then.

    • @guns2keepmefree
      @guns2keepmefree 3 роки тому +1

      @@robertmcevoy24 I remember all those things! I was living on the west side during the '89 quake and it was as as if everything was pre planned. I saw the first wrecking ball strike the Cooper house about a week after. We were still having major after shocks. It was sickening to see a piece of heavy equipment knock down a tree on Pacific avenue and just dump them on a waiting semi truck to be hauled off to who knows where. I live in Watsonville now by the Pioneer cemetery where George Leask, Charles Ford and Martinelli of apple juice fame are intered. Also, mountain Charlie, the first woman to vote in I think it was 1868. Fortunately we had a lovely lady, Betty Lewis who wrote books about local history.
      Good day

      @@guns2keepmefree I remember the Cooper house that’s sad to hear, I was one of the fist students to attend Natural Bridges elementary in 1965 we lived on Oxford way the was a 4 room school house on the same street as Safeway on Mission street Dad worked there also. In 1966 we moved to Felton. I sold my house in 1977 down the street from the new Capital mall and moved to Santa Rosa. I worked at Safeway also on 41st Ave when it first opened in 1972 then transferred to the Aptos store. Now I’m retired living on the coast of Washington not as beautiful like the coast of California.

      @@robertmcevoy24 the Capitola mall is very depressing, 50% vacant or more. The fountain is dry. Sears has been closed for a few years. The last Kmart in the county here in Watsonville is closing as we speak. Now I have to go to Salinas to buy a pair of shoes....
