    Lecture demonstration is so instructive. Better than a ton of reading. Guides even a lay listener to critically appreciate music and evaluate the musicians. 👏

      Yes the best interpretation is after a demonstration unlike conventional method used to study Science or literature where a student can grasp things from book....
      The voice production by striking a balance between nasality and complete mouth is a bit tricky..... Omkar doesn't work much as far as honkar does....

    We watched this program when it was first transmitted on Doordarshan,I think in the early eighties. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think we have had one singer in the last 100 years who could sing in four octaves as BMK demonstrates here; or hold breath for more than 25 seconds as shown here (I have heard him hold his breath even longer than this during a concert at Bombay's Shanmukhabanda venue)!! or, sing gamakas with his clarity and speed.. and what is more the voice which is unique and God-given!! Aside from his great singing, he is undoubtedly the greatest composer since the days of the Thrimurthies - thyagaraja, dixitar and shyama sastri.. in fact, I get a feeling he is a reincarnation of all the three who incarnated to take classical music to newer frontiers!! We will see another BMK only if his soul decides to return to earth to take classical music further.

      The period of Ajjada Adibhatla Narayana Das is 1864 - 1945. He is Harikatha Pitamaha and the founder Principal of Maharajah’s Music college in Vizianagaram, later taken over by Government. He was an expert in music, literature, dance, poetry, astavadhanam etc. He incorporated music, literature and dance in the art he created Harikatha. He is a very great vaggeyakara in the post Trinity period and highly revered by Mangalampally Balamuralikrishna garu. Balamuralikrishna garu was taken to Narayana Dasu garu by his guru and introduced to him when he was a child.

    I,as a layman can find a lot of difference between the quality of music in Hindustani and Carnatic. The latter has true touch of devotion and its Gamakas are excellent in the prestigious tone of Pt Balsubramanyam.

    What a joy to listen to and learn from this video. I particularly loved his words towards the very end. How people criticized him early in his career because he sang well and clearly with great emphasis on voice control, modulation and pronunciation! They said these qualities made him good only for cinema music, not classical. I think he has proved his naysayers wrong, just with the sheer beauty and sublimity of his music. I am forever grateful that I had the great fortune to have listened to one of the greatest musicians of all time.

    Clarity of words, clarity of note, alapana. 🙏🙏🙏.. Vande Guru Paramparaam 🙏

    Thank you for uploading this and the audio for the episode on raga aalaapana. It is incredible to get this teaching from an artist of his caliber, even if extremely short for a field as immense as Indian classical music.
    As an aside, I have not heard anyone who can pronounce Telugu words as crystal clearly as he can. Once you hear him sing/say the word, one can assume that is how that word should be pronounced. There is a concert (available on youtube) with Dr. Balamuralikrishna and Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty, with the bandish including the word, 'madhuram'. There is a world of difference when you hear that word from BMK. Unless one hears it, it is impossible to believe the same word can be pronounced with such difference.

    • @ykvk6983
      @ykvk6983 5 років тому +4

      Semmangudi was a phenomenon and a musical genius rare to come accross. I prefer to listen to him sing with abandon endlessly with amazement and self absorption. My father loved MBK and he was holding the same opinion like you. Semmangudi was not voice conscious while his singing and that had often taken him to unimaginable heights. Unfortunately, for many a singers who are often very conscious of their voice quality, taking a deep plunge into music may not be possible!!! These are my personal thoughts may not be agreeable to many. Incidentally, I am from purely Telugu background not knowing Tamil much. I love both Semmangudi and MBK.
