I have watched alot of these so called tutorials...they were all over the place....not clear...yours however will be my "Go-To" for instructions.Love the clarity Thank you!!!.
Hi you explained everything very cleary. Superb close ups throughout so I was able to see exactly what was being done. And no annoying music in the background. The best in tutorials Ive seen so far on this medium.👏🏿 👏🏿 Bravo teacher. I always wonder which is the right side of the work that should be facing up, as I like both sides.
I've been doing punch point since the 70s. My son played D&D & I'd punch point his characters for him to put on his jackets. Got my 1st kit from Joann Fabrics. Nice easy tutorial.
I'm a beginner, I've never done this or heard of it but it looks fun i just picked up my first punch stitch and am now excited to try. So its that easy no buttons to press it just goes on its own. I think I'm going to like it.
Ooohhh my! Thank you so much for sharing. I watched way too many videos on punch needle and still didn't "get it". Thanks to your video, I feel confident enough to go ahead with my first project!
Great video. Best I have seen. Really helps to watch you do it slowly and close up. Tried for first time earlier and didn’t look so good. This has helped! Thank you. 😊
Thanks for all the tips and tricks for punch needling. I got a punch needle in a sewing lot from an estate sale and didn’t know how to use it until now. I want to create scaled miniature rugs with it. Now I just need a good hoop to hold the fabric tight. I hope the fabric I already have will work for this project.
Oh that sounds like such a fun project! I love miniatures! I really love Morgan no-slip hoops and they come in lots of sizes. Good luck! I’d love to see a picture when you get one completed 😊😊😊
Hi there, I just discovered your channel & I am enjoying watching you punch on my 24" Mac monitor 😊 I am a novice puncher. I noticed you use your middle finger near the punch & fabric. Does that help you with your spacing? It looks like it does. I struggle a bit with that so I will try it your way. Thanks for the great video!
The pressure of the loops make it say in securely- if you went out of your way to pull on a thread, it would come out, but as long as you trim the threads even with the loops it stays in just fine under normal conditions. If you’re punching on something that will be washed, like a sweatshirt or a pillow, you can put a thin layer of washable glue on the back just to be safe. 😊😊😊
Great explanation but I still have a silly question...Which side is the correct? Or we can use both? Because I have seen some people who cut the rings to make some fluffy effect.
Both are correct! Traditionally, the side with the loops is “right”, but either side can be used as the finished side. A lot of modern designs use the flat side as the finished side, especially with super detailed patterns. Hope that helps 😊😊😊
Great tutorial, thanks! I've really messed up on my punch needle attempts.....I've used the large Rico needle with thick yarn on 7 hole monks cloth and it is not holding at all, just goes straight through!!!!!😢
Hi, I've bought the weaver's cloth, and the ultra punch needle. I'm punching into the fabric but the running stitches on the working side of fabric keep coming out so it becomes one large running thread. Most frustrating. Ive used both the medium and large needle. I've use 4 (medium)and 6 strands (large) of thread but the same thing happens each time. Sometimes I'm lucky to get a few running stitches but then the problem happens again.
Hi there. Read some questions but I just want to be clear: 1. The underside can be used as the main image of one wants more relief “texture”, right? 2. The higher the number the higher the loop/texture? 3. If I wanted a word to be on the more textured/relief underside, I assume it needs to be mirrored/backwards? 4. Any recommendations of materials if I’m looking at a large piece (2 x 3 feet +)?
1. Yes, you can use either side as the front. 2. Yes, higher number = taller loops 3. If the loop side will be the front, you’ll need to mirror your image/text. 4. My favorite is weavers cloth and DMC embroidery floss Hope that helps!
plz plz the thread go back after i take the neadle whats wrong??? and your video the best. watched nnnn... of videos but your real name the tutorial thank you
I really want to buy frame gribber instead of the hoop as am having hard time tightining the cloth in the hoop.what will the frame gribber hold the weaver cloth fabric or it works only with monks cloth?
Hi. So i ordered a “ultra punch” needle a while back but it looks much different than this one. It’s much more similar to an actual sewing needle and is sometimes hard to use. Is it the same thing but in a different style? I don’t know if i should keep practicing with it or go ahead and purchase the punch needle you linked. I would love any suggestions 😢😅
The actual Ultra Punch will look just like the one I’m using- it’s got a blue handle that you hold sort of like a chunky pencil. It’s a lot easier to use than the smaller ones I’ve tried, I highly recommend it!
I haven’t tried it on a store bought pillow case, but I think you could as long as you have the loop side as the front- that way you could put washable fabric glue on the back side if needed. Here’s a tutorial where I made a removable cotton pillow cover, I think this technique could be used on a pillow case as well www.marchingnorth.com/punch-needle-pillow-case/
Hi I just started doing this. And I've been having an issue with punching the needle and catching on the other loops. I have to keep flipping the project to make sure they don't do that. Is there a way to stop this?
When I’m filling in areas I try to stick to the brick pattern. Sometimes I don’t do it perfectly, but if you do the brick pattern it’ll give you more even loops on the other side 😊
when I do it every time I pick up the needle the last "stitch" comes out. and I don't lift it off of the fabric I'm doing it just like you but it isn't working, any ideas on how to fix this? I love doing these kinds of hobbies but I've only done it with yarn and I even got a little needle for embroidery floss.
You can do it either way- the traditional way to do punch needle is with the loops on the front. A lot of modern designs use the flat side as the front instead. There’s no wrong way, you can even mix the two if you want!
Traditionally, the side with the loops is the finished side, but with modern punch needle designs either side can be the front. Sometimes you can even mix it up and have both!
I’m having a hard time making stitches, after I punch the first stitch and pull the tail out, I’m not able to create a stitch with my second punch. I’m just making holes in my fabric…any suggestions?
The instruction booklet that came with my Ultra Punch indicates that the preferred way to punch is with the beveled edges sideways which means you could go in either direction without turning the needle or your work. However all the how to videos I have watched, including this one, says you should hold the needle with the bevel facing forward. This has always confused me. Can you un-confuse me?
You can punch with the beveled edges sideways as well, the flat side of the stitches just end up laying a little different that way, which is fine. I wanted to keep it simple for beginners, but both ways work! 😊 sorry for the confusion!
The loops are surprisingly sturdy believe it or not. You could pull it out if you really tried, but under normal conditions it would be fine. A good example is punch needle rugs, they last for generations even with being walked on all the time! For something like that it really helps to use a sturdy wool yarn and the proper backing fabric, but if you do that it’ll hold up really well.
I made a blouse with punch needle embroidery that went through multiple machine washings without any problem. When you are doing the embroidery it is much easier to pull out than after the item has been used and washed.
Seriously THE BEST tutorial I have found for a beginner like me. Thank you!! 😊
None of the videos in UA-cam explained the technique clearly as you did. Most useful video. Thanks 😊

I didn't know how to outline, turn corners, or fill the area. Thanks for a clear and easy to understand video.
you made threading that punch look so easy!! i think even i could do it now
Excellent tutorial. The best I’ve seen of this topic. Thank you 😊

I'm so glad it was helpful!! 🤗🤗
How do you know what stitch height you need to use with each project? And, how do you know what size needle you need for each project?
Thank you so much! Is it possible to use this technique over needle felted pictures?

That’s awesome! Putting my finger there helps me control where the needle goes, so yeah it does end up helping with my spacing 😊- you’re so welcome!
Thank you! This video was so helpful… one question… do you have to worry about the thread coming out, since you don’t tie it off?
Thanks for such a clear and easy to follow video! I was wondering what secures the threads? If a loop is pulled on will it unravel the whole thing?
The pressure of the loops make it say in securely- if you went out of your way to pull on a thread, it would come out, but as long as you trim the threads even with the loops it stays in just fine under normal conditions. Punch needle just came in 😁 Thanks for the tips and recommendations ❤️

Which type of fabric use for punch needdle work
I've tried cotton and linen and thic stuff
I just found your channel. Can I use a punch needle to embroider pillowcases?

But how do the threads not falling out? Are they looped tightly or knotted? I’m just wondering if it’s pulled, will it stay or not 😅
The tension of the thread against the fabric keeps it amazingly secure! The more loops you punch the stronger it gets.
how do you keep each stitch from coming cack out mine doesn't stay in the back I don't know what I'm doing wrong I bought a kit and It just unravels
What size pearl cotton do u use and do you 6 strands on reg.

My threader does not fit through the eye of the needle. I had to thread it by hand. :(
Oh no! You can get better threaders online- I like to get mine on Etsy, do a search for Ultra Punch threaders they’re nice and narrow.
