    Adults forget that they see these stories through a different lens than kids. Kids aren’t seeing real world issues or controversy, they are seeing the scary elements, that in turn make them aware of real world dangers, in a way that they can understand.

    Interesting.. Just to see that Goosebumps were challenged back in the days compare to the newer ones. Didnt remember Attack of the Jack-o'-Lanterns having like race stereotypes, I probably didnt mind it since I just read it recently, but the rest. it's weird. lol. makes them worth reading I guess.

    I do understand that Sarah is a polarizing character but to me I feel she’s a little bit misunderstood bc she has the characteristics of dealing with Autism. I just read the book for Autism Awareness Month and she really feels like a autistic character with the struggling to make friends with her bunk mates and not being a outdoors type but she at least tries to do things that aren’t for her. I do say her couple of pranks does change that feeling a little bit but overall I felt for her through most of the book. So I do understand the moments that are considered controversial can take you away from the book but I still really enjoyed the book.

    Reading "Creature Teacher" and "Creature Teacher: The Final Exam" as an adult, i have a suspicion that Ms. MARGHH is secretly an allegory for a child predator in a school setting, since MARGHH only eats one kid a year, and child predators usually select one child to manipulate or victimize in a school year.
    Just reading the scenes from each book where in one MARGHH licks the boy main character or is about to eat one boy who only has shorts on and no shirt on a silver platter in the other makes me uncomfortable for completely different reasons now.

He grows hair and there's a couple sus lines but otherwise it's pretty clean and doesn't get too iffy to me. I guess just having the idea the gets people weird for some reason.

I feel like people are very split on Ricky’s final decision, as a lot of people can sympathize with wanting to have revenge on their bullies, but there’s also a sort of school shooter connotation that comes with bully revenge stories now that we’re living in a post-Columbine world.

    • @goosebumpscompletionist7709
      @goosebumpscompletionist7709  Рік тому +1

      I agree it is allowed to be about it, but it doesn’t mean people have to like it or tolerate it lol. It’s not people saying it’s the puberty angle that makes it bad or never should’ve been made. It’s the way the story feels to them that makes it feel unnecessary in its delivery. It’s all taste subjection, if people think it’s an awkward story about puberty and isn’t something they don’t want to experience, I think that’s fine. But what I observe in the issues a lot is people for something, like puberty like you believe is cool. Then people who don’t think it’s cool. That’s why it’s controversial. One sides upset that people are offended/upset/unenthused about a certain thing and the other side is upset by people coming at them for being upset. Hence, the examples shown, all 8 I shared, often share that exact scenario. It’s the “taking offense/taking defense” approach that causes people to argue over these a lot.

    Animals are not on the same plane of value and importance as our own species(which is arguable but that’s my stance) therefore if we make stories about human violence we can do animal violence too

    • @goosebumpscompletionist7709
      @goosebumpscompletionist7709  Рік тому +2

      Like I said, as a Goosebumps fan, and proud of it, stuff like animal violence is very common. While I’m not up in arms about it, besides maybe one or two books that did it awkwardly, it’s one of those things you expect to see. Same thing with gross out gags, bully characters, horrible parents, etc. but I brought them up, because as a fan, I constantly hear that stuff from critics of the series. I just want to stress this to you specifically, because it seems your emotionally charged with these comments. I made this video as pure discussion, just bringing up the books I see people arguing about over controversial things the most. The fact that girls are being targeted in the old story adds no extra controversy to it changing sex should have no affect on it at all and honestly this one is just another one that makes you feel weird but isn’t actually worse than any other goosebumps story in any meaningful way in my opinion it simply comes close because it makes you think of pedophilia however it is not pedophilia at all really they are literally turning them old because they would be more attracted to them it’s like opposite pedophilia hard one to explain but in one sentence it makes me feel weird but I don’t think it should be controversial

    • @goosebumpscompletionist7709
      @goosebumpscompletionist7709  Рік тому +1

      I don’t think it’s the pedophilia aspect that doesn’t work persay, it’s the child trafficking element from Aunt Dahlia trying to sell the kids to her old friends that’s the kicker for most. It’s actually a really effective story to me, even despite that element, it does offer realistic fears of children growing up too fast and reflects the stigma we all have as pre-teens towards “old people”. It’s one I can understand though, it’s one where you have to firmly plant your tongue into your cheek to not be to affected by it.

  • @robinfernando5970
    @robinfernando5970 Рік тому +4

    I personally think the worst offenders were the stereotypical descriptions of the black character, which def would've been weird and harmful to any young black kids reading the book. And also any of the stories involving kids being in romantically or sexually implied situations with adult characters. I can understand why people are wary with the books that had fat-shaming in them. Honestly, it was pretty popular in the 90's for media to go for the low-hanging fruit of making fun of a fat person for "laughs". Yeah you got to remember, it is a franchise intended for kids. If this was an adult book, I don’t think anyone would bat an eye to it. But why it’s controversial is that people just feel her character sets a bad example for kids reading the book and the behavior is unusual and manipulative, like I said in the video. Not saying the behavior doesn’t have any merit to it, just people don’t like it.

    I really don't get the controversy about the overweight thing. Sounds like people being overly sensitive. And as for the stereotype thing, honestly, I didn't see it. Never stood out that way, or bothered me.

    • @johnbakasmoothhotchocolate
      @johnbakasmoothhotchocolate Рік тому +3

      Well that's you, but you can't tell people to not be offended or sensitive about something like that. I mean, the book is really bad because it portrays the characters not using sound judgment ONCE AGAIN after the last time the camera literally made one of them vanish. But it's the way it's described in the chapter that it's okay to ridicule someone JUST for their weight. Whether Stine at some point of his life went through that, or he's just an a-hole that might do the same thing as other ignorant people do, I don't know. But once again, that's fine if you don't see it that way but not everyone is like you. Nor does it make it wrong for others to not feel the way you don't. Just remember that.

    • @brianseay8242
      @brianseay8242 Рік тому +10

      I don't get the controversy either David Martinez. It's funny how the things that are being discussed weren't controversial at the time the books were released and now they are. Isn't that really a reflection of how "sensitive" today's generation is to everything? When I grew up reading these books, things like the overweight thing didn't faze me. Heck, it never stood out to me and I was a bit overweight as a kid. Even the Harry Potter books, which feature an overweight character, are now being criticized for the way that character was described, which wasn't even a problem when the books were first published. It's funny to me how readers criticize a book for not being too "realistic" and when a book is "realistic" on certain topics, it becomes offensive. So damn if you do, and damn if you don't on the part of the writer. And for writers, who have a lot on their plate as it is to writing a book and the array of feelings, ups, and downs that come with it, for them to worry about whether they're going to offend this "faceless" person and that "faceless" person is overwhelming. A writer CAN'T please everyone! Their job is to write a story, for the readers, yes, but a story that portrays some kind of truth. Fiction is a lie, but it does have truth and portrays real-world things. Goosebumps is a lie, it's imaginary but does portray real-world elements. Suffice it to say, overweight people do get picked at, there are bullies, and people sometimes do fall into stereotypes---and it would be false, even in a kids book, to act like these things don't happen.

    • @brianseay8242
      @brianseay8242 Рік тому +2

      @@johnbakasmoothhotchocolate when it comes to the overweight thing, I'd be more hurt and offended if someone made fun of me in my face about it rather than seeing it portrayed in a book between characters. And those who do offend others in real life because of their weight, I highly doubt that bully adopted that attitude from a Goosebumps book!

    • @johnbakasmoothhotchocolate
      @johnbakasmoothhotchocolate Рік тому +5

      @@brianseay8242 you don't get it either. It's not if people outright say it to your face, which is bad enough itself. But the book is giving a bad message about how it's okay to make fun of people who may be obese, but fail to understand if it's actually from food or another condition that's beyond that person's control. THAT'S what I mean. But in any event, like I told the other guy, not everyone sees things your way, or even have to see things your way, and you have to just respect that. And while you're complaining about getting something like that from a book, I can go one step better than some stupid book. A TV show, for example. And if they outright promoted that via that way, that show WILL have some problems.

    • @SpongeyTheEditor
      @SpongeyTheEditor Рік тому

      @@brianseay8242 Just because it wasn't controversial at the time doesn't mean it wasn't bad. Some of things were even frowned upon at the time in among those groups but were still just kind of accepted, you see this with plenty of old offesnive things. In this case one reason is we didn't see the impact things like that would have on kids as they grow up.
      I'd hardly call a camera making some supernaturally fat "Realistic". Stine has stated he tried to keep "Real" issues out of the series to keep it mostly safe, so if you're gonna break that, you gotta have a good reason and do it with tact.
