The Union Blockade was very effective in it's purpose. But neutral observers pointed out that the blockade was technically illegal due to Lincoln's refusal to recognise the Confederacy as a nation. He steadfastly refused to do this so the Union was technically blockading US ports.
That’s true. Lincoln did a lot to bend the Constitution (though I still contend he stopped short of breaking it). In his defense, the survival of the country was at stake; if the Confederacy won, then the country as a whole would’ve fallen apart. So I guess he felt that he had to stretch things a bit to keep the country intact.
