The only reason why Gwi was defeated in the end because he no longer have the will to live. He's obviously stronger than the main character and yet he lost. Gwi lost the only one that he truly loved, but consumed with his pride, he kept denying it. It was only then that she died when he fully realized how much she ment to him, she's the only reason he kept living, and if losing her means losing his only reason to live, he's willing to die in the arms of his long time enemy.
To prove your statement, i have to say, throughout the drama, gwi tried to prevent the scholar from finding the secret to kill him i.e. drink female lead's blood. But in the fight scenes after hye ryeong's death, he didn't stop the scholar from drinking the female lead's blood even though he knew that he could kill him and that process happened right in front of his eyes. Why the heck would he not stop the very thing that he's been trying so hard to prevent from happening? I think it's because he doesn't want to live his immortal life anymore
I suppose Hye Ryeong did care about Gwi at the start. He was her only hope of getting back at her father, the only way she could gain enough power to protect herself and her mother. But I guess for her, Gwi always mentioned how he only kept her around because she was useful. Then she met the King, and despite their rough start, she realises that he cares for her and loves her regardless of whether or not she is “useful” to him. That’s probably what made her like the King. On the other hand, I think a part of her will always like Gwi too. In the beginning he was a scary monster to her, but then little by little, she realises that he’s just a “child” in an adult’s body. That he just wants to become a human or to understand what humans call a “heart”. I suppose the reason why she chose the King over Gwi at the end of the day was because she feels that there is little she can do to ever have a normal relationship with Gwi, or to even change his mind about the things he is doing.
Gwi was the only reason I continued the series till the end, I wish the director should have explored his mysterious life a bit more and how HyeReyong feels for him ...... I wish there was a love story of them with a happy ending
OMGGGG I was waiting for someone to make a video like this for the recent episodes. I think episode 19 was my favorite and i watched their parts over and over again on replay. I think that was the very episode that basically sums up his love for her. It was just so bittersweet and sad and the first time we ever see gwi let his guard down

For Gwi to act like that, he must felt something deep for her,right? Who else watch Inuyasha? Naraku is the evil one but in the end, it turns out that all he did was because of his unrequited love for Kikiyo. I can't hate Naraku then. Maybe evil characters show their love in a twisted way but then they are also people in love. They get hated on but they are the completely loyal ones. I was hoping for more SooSo moments and explanation but the mystery is also what's keeping me hooked up more. Anyways, in every chapter, we also saw how Gwi is trying to seduce HyeRyeong. I love how emotions played in SooHyuk's face whenever Hyeryeong rejects him or talks about being a queen,.

crumpetgirl yeah..that was one of the reason why I am so hooked up with this couple. They keep me wondering what they really feels for each other. You should watch Inuyasha too :) The love story is great too but I like Kikyo more (who is like Myunghee, male lead's first love).
I think HyeRyeong also loves Gwi ;( it would be thousands times better if the writer gives explaination why HyeRyeong loves the King that much and how HyeRyeong and Gwi feels about each other. But they are not main characters so no complain T. T

It's obvious that he became crazy after HR died, he killed all & looking for a fight to be killed cause he found it's meaningless to live more.
