a professor, painting artist, academy dean and martial art grand master ! I used to read his book daily to learn and meditate upon. From Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan to the United States he has spread the essence of this precious martial art ! China's national treasure, indeed !

I always enjoy watching demonstrations like these. They remind me that Martial Arts are like going to the beach as a child, and you see the entire beach before you. The sand dunes, the shore line, the waves, and the ocean stretching off into the distance. So you explore the dunes and find plants and birds, and you explore the shore and find shells and driftwood, and you explore the water and see fish and feel the water wash over and move you... Perhaps as you grow older you fall in love with the beach, and continue to explore the dunes. Do you find 100 things? Perhaps you continue to explore the shore. Do you find 1000 things? Maybe you continue to explore the ocean. Do you find 10,000 things? There is always something to find, if you consider it worth looking for.

In all fairness with years of MA experience, it just didn't look real or seem possible...then I met a true master. It is like getting hit with a cannon ball in the belly while a rope around your waist yanks you off balance. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't felt it.

And thats what it takes. Exactly! Personal experience. The deeper levels of the Art are mysterious. Human development takes time and sacrifice. The old Chinese didn't use the term kung fu lightly.
      Keep practice.
Overcome the darkness. Return the Light.
      Peace.

Does anyone know if that was Patrick Watson in the glasses doing Push Hands with CMC? I knew him in the mid 80s and this looks like a younger version.

All of this squabbling? Is squabbling a part of Tai Chi? I have done Cheng's Tai Chi short form since the 1960's and it has helped me immensely in many ways. What more can I say or what more need I say?

Albert Nygren, I think some people are missing the true talent of Cheng Man Ching. He was able so quickly to see where his opponent was hard, was weak, and his finesse was so graceful.
I trained with a 5 times China push hands champions, Hui Kang, and he is very powerful, but Master Cheng's grace only comes with age. After studying Chinese Medicine in Beijing, I have become more fascinated with the discussions on Fa Jing. Interesting stuff.

Yes Michael, Cheng was the real deal. He was so far above me if my teacher saw I was commenting on such excellence as Cheng he would probably never speak to me again for my having such arrogance. People always like flash. My teacher said he saw Cheng's daughter as a slight you8ng woman cause huge medicine balls to "explode"! with just a flick of her wrist and obviously her father taught her! I only learned enough from my teacher to save my life and prolong it 40 years. Obviously Cheng's Tai Chi was useless for me.

ITs been a brief moment since I have been a dedicated student . Since our Professor is limited to work and form it hurts. Saving me from leaving has been nothing more than a golden gift. But since our school is in Hosptial we cannot do physical contact. That means no push hands . For 2 months I was critical and a special class just for me was given. There he taught me push hands. This was the most fun to have my Boss all to myself. More than that I could shuffle with my 265 lb nephew
I think he enjoyed it more than I did. Although he always complained he would be redirect ed by my simple turning. So I wait and be thankful for the 4 bouts 1x heart 3xcancer 1 murdered sUn.
So I give all of u my cousins to learn and be thankful...

    I would only say
Practice with someone who was trained by Benjamin lo. Benjamin lo was senior student of CMC.
There was definitely taste of CMC, where push hands session became “realization” and “laughable moments”
There are probably great tai chi practitioners where they can defeat opponents in push hands. But they won’t be able to guide via “questions”, “answers” formats rather just they like to dominate opponents.

@smr144 - Astute observation and absolutely right! Although I've seen footage shot toward the end of his life where it appeared he had acquired some Yang-Peng-Jing, but definitely no high-level Yin-Peng.

lol everyone keeps saying it's all physical push. the funny thing is that obviously ALL you'll be able to see (truly) visibly is external power not internal. if you were the one making contact with Cheng then I'd take your word for it. unfortunately I doubt any of you have pushed hands with Master Cheng. Don't forget, he's teaching... just because he appears to only be using external methods doesn't mean that's all he can do. Ever hear of being humble?

    Hello Guys.
It seems there is a lot of confusion here.Real Tai Chi, as taught by Professor Cheng Man Ching, is not about fighting or physical control of situations or people. This is the point and the mental click that nowadays the majority of us, if not everyone, is not ready to accept and live!! Of course I also suspect that the old masters like Yang Lu Chang to fight in a complete different society have to be much better or apply external tatics to combat.

    • @macrumpton
      @macrumpton 2 роки тому

I think you are confused. His methods in these movies are gentle practice designed to cultivate the balance, strength, relaxation and sensitivity that would allow you to be an effective fighter. I learned from one of his students, and he could literally have you stumbling backwards across the room with the gentle touch of a fingertip by seeing your instability and nudging you onto it. I had no doubt he would be a formidable opponent,

All physical push... No peng-jing. Really folks, do you think that Yang Lu-Chang, The Invincible, was undefeated in the fighting capital of the world -Beijing- of mid 19th century by doing this????? Give me a break...

    • @acupuncter

You cannot tell without making contact. You should know that. Yang Lu-Chan would not be proud of your lack of humility and respect for this lineage.

Thats a lot to deduce from a brief video of someone teaching. He was taught by yang cheng fu, an exceptional master and teacher.
