📚 Exposure, Exposure! My son was reading by age five (we were amazed! ) My main contribution was purchasing books and reading lots. He enjoyed Thomas the Tank Engine books the most and learned to also memorize short and longer stories. As homescoolers there were many visits to our local Library as well. Thank you for causing me to reminisce on those wonderful memories of my only son.. 😁 💖
Thank you for this! My daughter is a September baby so realistically we will probably be learning to read before school as she'll be 5 when starting. I'm also considering homeschooling so love this, thank you!
Hi Marion! A tip I learned in my teacher education program...try not to say "uh" at the end of each letter sound. For example, the letter m makes the sound "mmmm" not "muh". The videos of Max reading are so precious!!
Haha, yes Marion, I too found myself raising and eyebrow at some of the stories in the book. My mom is a retired elementary school teacher and when I told her about this reading method she said "Oh yeah, that's Distar. Our district used that program years ago to teach English learners to read." So, perhaps these stories are holdovers from the 1970s and 1980s, but the method sure worked for our daughter and we just turned those eyebrow raiser stories into teachable moments. Thanks for another great video. -From a fellow Bruin c/o 2005.
Thankyou Marion. This looks like a great program. I homeschool my 4 kids and taught them read using a similar phonics based program that worked really well. I don't have any little ones learning to read now but I will definitely recommend to friends who have little ones. Max's little voice reading is so so cute. You must be one very proud Mamma.
I taught my kids with this book before kindergarten and my mom taught my siblings back in the 80s. I started because my #1 dropped a book on my face in the morning and said “read mommy.”
Brilliant! When taking swim classes, we only took one half hour, not one full hour Why? So at the end of lesson they were not tired, still excited, we left wanting more. Eager for next lesson. You are doing an outstanding job.
I'm just about to get started with this book with my almost 5 and almost 3 year olds. They're both so interested in reading, so we'll see what each kid can handle.
I really enjoyed seeing the intro to this great video! I think this specific topic is very important for many parents who have children to take concept of. I think it is awesome how much you care for the development of children's reading. People in general in today's world are not reading as much as before like many decades ago mainly due to the technological advancements we have in television and computers and internet. I encourage you to make your children great readers which is so important. Thank you so much for another enriching and positive video. During these tough times we are living in this type of content is really a pleasure to watch. Your children are so blessed to have a wonderful and caring mother like you! Take care Marion! 😍
Aww thank you so much it’s definitely a topic I really care about and I think we underestimate what our kids can do they don’t always need fancy apps to learn!
Did you read it yourself before you hopped into it? I just purchased the book last month and tried to start reading it and I had to have a coffee after! The idea of teaching such a huge thing to my daughter slightly terrifies me even though I know I’m able to. 😅
Hi Marion. Thanks for the excellent video. It inspired me to start the book with my 3.5 yo a month ago. But somewhere around lesson 30, i am noticing that although he can sound out all the words, he doesn't always answer the comprehension questions. You mentioned it took you 6 months to do 100 lessons. Did you guys take breaks at some points/face any hurdle like this? -any tip or advice would really help Also, did you use ay supplement book along with this like BOB books? Thanks!
Hi! We actually didn't focus as much on the comprehension questions and yes some days we definitely took breaks or only did half a lesson, I tried to keep it as positive as possible so if he wasn't feeling it we would take a break but still tried to keep it a daily routine as much as possible.
@@MyJewishMommyLife thank you for the reply. We ended up taking a 2 week break and reading BoB books. Now we are keeping it at 2-3 lessons a day and BoB books on no lesson days. Still gives a routine but lessons are placed.
What a darling opening with Max reading to Corey. It looks wonderful because I was taught to read using phonics. How do they handle THE (thee vs. thah) pronunciations? Do they get into the fact that we use thah book with a short E sound and thee orchestra with a long E sound because of the vowel or consonant that follows. When a vowel sound that is open we go with the long E, which makes it easier to say. When a consonant, we open up the sounds by using the long E sound preceding it. This is true in Celtic names, too. McIntyre is pronounced mack, not mick, because it is hard to say with the vowel sound at the beginning of the ancestral name. So the Mc and Mac names are all pronounced mick or mack based upon the following vowel or consonant, rather than the actual spelling of its "son of" prefix. Thus MacGinty is mick. I take it you just discussed with Max anything that involved standards that you are trying to teach a bit differently. How do you feel he is doing with comprehension of stories he reads?
@@MyJewishMommyLife He'll get the further refinement in school or pick it up from hearing other people say it or when he finds it's hard to say at times. One can complicate things too much when children are just learning. It's like the total vowels including sometimes Y and W. But that's advanced.
The main thing is to teach with love and patience. Children differ in their interest to learn how to read at a young age. Learning to read should be an enjoyable experience . I saw this with my own kids and I have five. Some of them were eager to learn and some less but they all became interested in reading eventually.
I just had to click on this because your 4 year old reading is so beyond impressive and cute. I’m struggling with my own son but I know that’s because we’re in Israel and I’m teaching him to read two languages at once. I’ve heard some say that is a big no no....

I love this yes and totally agree!
This is really impressive... you’re a wonderful and dedicated mom. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Aww thank you so much ☺️
Yes - it teaches the individual phonemes along with short and long vowel sounds! Perfect!
Thank you for this! My daughter is a September baby so realistically we will probably be learning to read before school as she'll be 5 when starting. I'm also considering homeschooling so love this, thank you!
So glad it’s helpful! We’re also the oldest in our school year too!
My mom used this book to teach me to read in the 90’s. It really works

Yes I was actually going to make that note in the description that when I was sounding out the letter sounds it's important not to do that!

This was such a helpful review!! I really appreciated seeing your son read through the book - I am totally trying this with my son this year!

To be honest as well, you are a natural teacher and communicator.
Aww thank you so very much!
My mom taught myself and my siblings how to read with that book!!!!
That's so cool!! It's definitely been a staple for generations.
I have this book, I'm going to give it a try again with my daughter.
Hope you guys love it!
Just incredible! Well done.
Aww thank you so much!!

The book pronounces 'the' as THEE and that worked for us, I'm not sure exactly why though.

Great info. Thank you. 👍❤️
You’re so welcome!
😳😮wow sooo nice to see that!!
Thank you!
What did you do to build comprehension?
Thank you for this. I’m curious if you know any books like this in Hebrew?
Thank you! I don't but I am on the lookout for one!
Thanks for sharing! I bought this book. Did your son know ALL of his ABCs before you started this book?
He did but not the lowercase letters
your kids are adorable! do u plan on sending your kids to public school?
Thank you! We're not sure just yet!
5:30 이게 뭐야?
Thank you for sharing. I will get this book because it preceded the current obsession with Safetyism and lacks ‘woke’ corrosive conformity.
Salam I need this book pdf thanxs
One important thing to understand is with phonics, the sound of the letter “m” is not “muh” but it is “mm.” “Ch” us not “chuh”, it is “ch.”
in welsh, it’s different.
Amazing! Have you seen a similar book like this in french?
I haven't!!
Tell me if you found one 😮
Does anyone else find the use of the font for 'a' wrong? No one uses that font anymore so why teach a child to write it that way?
That's what I thought but honestly if you look at most ptinted books they use that type of a. And we can teach them the different fonts.
