I’m doing this with one of my kids. They are in grade 5 (public school) but still struggling to learn to read. My brother got this book for me to go over with my child and so far it’s been good. We are trying to do a lesson daily. Sometimes the lessons take 15 or as little as 3 minutes so it’s not too overwhelming.
Taking my 2.5 year old through these & it has been a blessing. We are on lesson 8 and we do one typically everyday from Mon - Saturday but since the lessons have gotten longer I typically split them in half & restart the second half of the lesson with the sounds review. My daughter loves it & is progressing rapidly!
Thank you for the suggestion about trading off reading every other paragraph. My daughter loved the beginning of the book no problem, but around lesson 55 or so she had a rebellion and said she wouldn't read those passages any more because they are too long. We switched to Teach Me to Read which is similarly priced on Amazon and started at the beginning. She is breezing through that and is on Unit 3 of 5 now. We will go back to the Teach Your Child to Read later once we build up more reading stamina and confidence.
I homeschooled 6 children and used this book for each of them. I found another great book to help them learn to sit for the lessons and also to build the skills needed to begin reading. It’s called Getting Ready to Read by Julie Shaffer. It works hand in hand with this book.
Do you mean Jo Fitzpatrick? I have searched for Getting Ready to Read by Julie Shaffer and find nothing. However there is a phonics book by Jo Fitzpatrick of the same title. Thank you!
I love this book! It worked so well with my son at age 5. He has excellent reading fluency. I'm now using it with my daughter. We just started but so far, she's doing great! Very thankful for this book! Thanks for sharing!!
The key is for the parent to read fast. Get familiar with the pattern and then do it fluidly. I also wrote the letter or word on the whiteboard instead of in the book with my last child. She's the only one who finished the entire book! I still drag my finger under the word.
I love that you went over this, Julie!! I ordered this book about a month ago and will be using it this year to teach my son Abe, how to read! So glad you find it to be effective! This was so helpful-you’re a natural!💕
I just started with my 4 year old. Shes on lesson 30 in Reading Eggs right now, so the beginning steps in this book are very quick and easy for her. She can slowly read the first bob books. We are at step 7 so far in teach your child to read book. This review is very helpful. Weve been pretty thorough and yes it is repetitive but i figured do as they say and she will be successful! Im hoping she will be reading pretty good before age 5 which is 8 months away so plenty of time to reach that goal!
Thank you for this video! I was given this book and it seemed so daunting! I appreciate your straight forward explanation and introduction. Now I am pumped and cant wait to start!
Thank you so much for this because I did so many curriculums and now that I watch your video this is so helpful because in my mind I thought they had a read by five and my daughter is five and she wants to read. She tells me she wants to read and we read ton of read alouds and I read aloud to her and we have the bob books. We have Pete the cat books, learning dynamics set off Amazon, we did all about reading, ordinary teacher guide reading, abeka, sonlight .. like I thought it was the curriculum that wasn’t working, and then we have this, and it’s so much easier tbh but she still struggles with blending the sounds to make a word. And we have ton of books that’s on her level And we do a lot of rhyming books poem books and I got this and the same scenario as your situation is, she did very well with each individual letter sound but when it came to making a three letter word like Sam or mat she had no clue how to sound that out and put it together and it was frustrating and Now that I watched your video I’m just gonna continue to read to her and just go back to it. Thank you so much for this
I'm so glad you made this cause I just got this for my son for homeschool for September! My sister got it and says it's great! And I saw it on your channel a while back and thought I'd try it!
Hi Julie! I know this is not a new video, but I was wondering where you go next after you've finished the book! My almost 6 year old finished it over the break and we have Bob Books but I'm not sure what to do next!
Thanks for the flip through! I found this book for $7 at a used book store. I want to try and use this when my daughter is ready to read and it's great to see how you use it.
Thank you for sharing this. I currently have a struggling 1st soon to be 2nd grader. He has some difficulty reading. I was looking at this and wondering if it would work for us
Hello, I have a 12 year old whom can't get the sounds to work together when he reads. Sounding out is almost impossible for him. Do you think this would be a good option to go back and teach him the sounds? He knows the sounds of each letter its when they are combined with others vowles and letters that he can't decipher the proper sound.
It's a year later so might not be relevant anymore, but the book "Reading Reflex" has been super helpful for decoding odd letter combinations for my kids. It presents the English language as a written representation of sounds. Some symbols or combinations of symbols can represent more than one sound, and some sounds can be represented by more than one symbol/combination. The book starts with the most common ones and goes through all 100-something possible combinations. When decoding a word, you try out possible sounds that the symbols could represent until you recognize it as a word you've heard before. It's really neat how it breaks language down into a linguistic-inspired system. The company even has a remedial reading program designed for teens, with teen-themed content so it meets them where they're st.
Forgive me if this is a silly question. Do you have the child say the words in the first few lessons or do they actually look at the pages and read the words. I cannot find this information in the book.
Hello! Just purchased this book thank you for starting the video from lesson one (that was hard to find!). I wondered what you thought about starting this book when the child is already 6yo and familiar with sounds and some words where/ how would you recommend we jump in? 💗 thanks again! 🙏🏻
I would definitely still use this book! I would probably still start at the beginning, and just work through it quickly. This is how my second child was. We just started off by doing five lessons a day!
Wow this video is so incredibly helpful…and thorough!! Im homeschooling as well and I purchased this book a week ago and had no idea how to use it. I appreciate this so much!! ❤❤
We're on lesson 5, mine already knows the letter sounds. We're doing 2-3 lessons a day. We'll slow down when we get to new sounds or sight words. How is it going for you?
I came to this video because I am doing this right now with my daughter (3.5). I am trying to make it more fun for her because she told me today she doesn’t like the book! Haha I think I am being too ridged.

I loved the video, the information provided is super excellent, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you! We're 3/4 of the way through and my kindergartener is losing focus. I'll try your tips so we can get to the story every day.
Thank you for this! I got the book and it was a lot to flip through. Seeing and hearing you explain it made it easier to start
THANK YOU for taking the time to THOROUGHLY walk through this. This is AMAZING and SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you! ♥♥♥

What did you use after you finished this?
Thank you for doing this! I just bought this book and was dreading reading the intro of how to do all this. Very helpful!
That’s great to hear! I know what you mean, this book does seem overwhelming when you start. I hope this helped ❤️
Watch with 1.75 speed, good review thanks
Thank you for walk through, I used this for my second child, and now will resume using it for the my 3rd child.
Looks awesome!!! We start phonics at 4 but I had no idea we where homeschooling at that time.
That was very helpful, thank you Julie!!
Thank you so much! You explained it so well.

This looks great! I just love the process of helping a little one learn to read. 🥰
Yes!! So rewarding ❤️

I love this book. It is very similar to my book. We use the well trained mine. It just makes reading so easy.
Making it easy is perfect! ❤️
Thank you so much!!!!
What do you use after 100 easy lessons?
I'm so glad you made this cause I just got this for my son for homeschool for September! My sister got it and says it's great! And I saw it on your channel a while back and thought I'd try it!

Hi, so do you do the lessons without flashcards? Just with the book?
I'd there anywhere you can get printable flashcards with this book?
Forgive me if this is a silly question. Do you have the child say the words in the first few lessons or do they actually look at the pages and read the words. I cannot find this information in the book.
Thx 4 the vid.

@@Gaby_Cakey It’s going great!! We’re actually 1/2 way through the book!! I’m trying not to over hype it but it’s honestly amazing. 10/10.
How do you teach spelling?
I have this question too.
We used this too and best book! Mine were 4 and by the end were reading 1st grade level.
