- Tennessee State Reps. Justin Jones and Gloria Johnson join Ali Velshi to discuss Gov. Bill Lee (R-Tenn.) signing a bill allowing teachers to carry firearms in schools, how unpopular the bill is across the state, and the true motives behind the decision. “Teachers did not come to them with the legislation. Every major county has already said no, since this is permitted, we are not arming teachers,” Johnson says. “No one asked them for this bill.”

Can you imagine the liability a school district would face should a teacher shoot an unintended target?? What about if a teacher was careless with gun storage and a student got ahold of a weapon and committed a mass shooting? This is ridiculous legislation.
The law allows teachers to carry a gun. Do you really believe they would let a teacher with no weapons training to do so?"

In most countries around the world, school children have no idea what an ‘active shooter drill’ is. Schools are schools, not shooting galleries.

*Those approx 640 mass shootings in 2023 average out to 1.75 per day
* There were 40,000+ firearm related death in the USA in 2023.
* In the USA there are MORE firearms than people!

They better have these answers ready because it will happen. Sooner or later it will happen. Teachers are to distracted doing their real job. They have about 25 kids at one time in a classroom. What if 10 of them rush a teacher and take the gun? Omg this is insane and it is not going to go over well. My husband refuses to carry a gun and he is a teacher. Literally out of mind. The mind of many americans are out there, somewhere....very far. It hasn't been seen for years.
Interesting point about scaring parents from sending kids to public school - yet another way to help private schools, religious schools, and homeschooling. I went to a private school, but there are a few top-notch public schools too.
That goes above and beyond my original reaction, which is that I train in pistol craft 12 hours per weekend, to be able to draw from holster quickly and efficiently to land headshots and body shots within 2 seconds @ 25 yards. I am not intimidated by AR-15s vs. my pistol, because I can shoot faster and further and more accurately than your average shooter. However, this is not the norm - which is my point.
If I am already logging in 48 hours per month, this is already way more than TN's unrealistic minimal requirements. I train year round every weekend, so we are talking 48*12 = 576 hours, not to mention special tactical training classes - and I am not even military or law enforcement! (I'm a wealth manager.). Our teachers are nurturers, not guardians or warriors. Having guns in schools will be more of a liability than a deterrent.
In my public school district, the police department is on campus, so response time is within 5 minutes. When discussing protocol with the Chief, he said that the School Resource Officer will attempt to neutralize the threat, as soon as one other officer arrives as his backup. Proximity to the school and solid tactical procedures from the police are the deterrent - not arming our beloved teachers.
I think your point about making public schools a scary place is a brilliant point to connect the dots. The NRA doesn't care about a few more guns being sold to the rare teacher who wants one. In all likelihood, any teachers who agree to it probably already have their own, so this is not about marginally increasing sales. This is about wrecking public schools...
With those numbers, how can you be away from training and work long enough to post that lecture/list of talking points??

Safe weapons storage also is a given, NO ONE who has been trained will leave an explosive item of private property laying around like a stick of gum. Not aimed you Michaellynn7745, only at the thought free anti gun loons who are here.
Just the ideal of meeting armed resistance has deterred violent people before. Often a weapon has only to be displayed to be effective at keeping the peace. In the past I have had to show myself to be armed to survive a situation. And I have had to use my firearm also. Glad I had it.
We can start by using some of the methods the police use to evaluate possible armed teachers before actual training. What do you think?
Respectufally, and speaking as a former teacher and a concealed carry person, I could not disagree more with your "guesses" at what will be "wrecking public schools" or what a "liability" looks like. It is always those with ZERO military background, no fire arms training or law enforcement background spitting out assumptions like they are facts...If law enforcement is "on campus" then response time should be a lot less than 5 minutes (???) and that would mean less of a reason for teacher to wish to carry a weapon but if they choose to, they should have that available to them...
@@JayCWhiteCloud Within 5 minutes means < than 5 minutes, not greater than 5 minutes. I think you misread something. They are just a short drive, in my local situation - definitely less than 5 minutes.
I don't have a problem with people carrying, but I do have a problem with people not being skillful enough. I am more afraid of friendly fire than an active shooter. In a chaotic situation, the police will have a hard time knowing who is the active shooter, who is an armed parent vs. who is the armed teacher. This becomes a very perilous situation for all involved. I've seen videos where the "good guy with a gun" gets shot mistakenly by the police.

If you vote blue the only representation you will get is more corruption, and a fast track to a socialist repulic as you will have neither the weapons to protect yourself or a real voice of representation...but by all means...remain dilluded as you wish to be...
Research assessed democracy in every state. Tennessee came in dead last. - VOX
According to one scholar’s research on democracy in the US, Tennessee is indeed the least democratic state in the entire country.Tennessee’s low score in 2018 has a lot to do with its egregious partisan gerrymanders at both the state and federal level - a problem that only got worse in the post-2020 census redistricting cycle. Research from the Princeton Gerrymandering Project shows that there is not a single competitive seat in the state senate - Democrats are so efficiently packed in a handful of strongly Democratic districts that Republicans have a near-guaranteed super-super majority (over 80 percent of seats!) in the statehouse’s upper chamber. TN is part of a general trend where democracy has degraded in Republican-controlled states.
Anyone who quotes VOX unironically should be immediately disregarded.

I work in education and have for 21 years, I support my peers carring firearms if they so choose to.
Having read the bill everything the Democrats have been pushing from safe storage to enhance background checks are required for teachers to carry a firearm.
To be honest if Democrats refuse to harden schools to the level of a country courthouse or Jail then this is the only avenue available.
I'm also a former teacher (private) and I carried a gun also. Thank you for speaking up and to the true and not the radical and obtuse comments shared in the commentary as it certainly was not "reporting the news" in any way...Seems like our courts in the blue states are keen on housing illegal immigrants, not prosecuting criminals, and stopping the law-abiding from having guns to protect themselves and those around them. I've never seen such a large group as we find on the left living is such a deluded state of reality in all my life...!!!
Them being against this just proves its just because they hate guns and it's never been about safety. The teachers would have to go through more than the average CCW training and are not required to carry. Yet they are screaming this will be the end of the world. They can't make up their minds.
Luckily it is only a bill as of yet, not a law and the bill does say "Allowing" not "Requiring" teachers to carry guns. Still, It should have never been brought to the floor of the Tennessee Legislature. Hopefully the people will remember that when voting for their State representatives this coming election.
No, the governor already signed the bill into law.
It's signed and into law. This is a thing in many other states, yet nothing they said would happen has happened. This is the same with the constitutional carry bills that 29 states have now. Mass hysteria saying the world will end yet once it passes nothing they say happens.
@@alexwyatt2911 Thank you for the update.

The Tennessee state house clearly recognizes gun violence targeting schools is an issue, or they wouldn’t think teachers should be armed. Despite that recognition, they refuse to do something productive. If I lived in Tennessee, I’d be livid. If they try to pull something like this in Georgia, where I live and am from, I will be standing with the teachers and advocates who oppose this.
Thank God you don't live in Paradise!!
Texas has allowed college professors to carry on school grounds since 2016...
In the nineties I saw this spray painted on a freeway overpass in Austin Tx "smash the police state". No talking in class, kaboom.
I was a teen in the nineties and your comment doesn't make sense. "No talking in class, kaboom." What does this even mean?
Stop gaslighting , no one ask the teachers as it is voluntary! Regarding to her gaslighting about bringing the firearms into the school, if it is so secure , how the mentally ill shooter got it into the school in the first place if it is so secure
Be still...your getting dangerously close to bursting the delusional bubble so many like we see in this video carry around with them all the time...
I come from a family of teachers. I can't think of a single teacher in my family who should carry a loaded weapon. They're teachers, not trained warriors.
Are you saying that teachers are irresponsible or unhinged? I'd tend to agree for many K-12 schools
Texas has allowed college professors to carry on school grounds since 2016...
We should be seriously concerned about any teacher who would want to be armed at school
Why...My son's teacher carried and consealed weapon, so did the vice principle of the shool and so do I. Most folks didn't even know, so why be "concerned?"

Great idea . All teachers should own guns to protect students. This is a common sense way to ensure school safety.
I looked up your channel, please seek out mental health services, there is no such thing as a "targeted individual." Also, giving teachers guns is not a solution to mass shootings, I'll give you a pass on your opinion due to your mental illness. Again, please seek out help.
@ImpeccableLiving 😂 Do you have a solution? Cab you explain why school shootings have risen eight after the 1990s gun free school zone bill?

I think it is the oppisit...I think many of these types are too "book smart" and live in an altered state of illusion...not reality. If they think it, it becomes fact and if they scream loud enough and call things "insane" that makes it the truth...
I’m willing to bet that everyone on here moaning and complaining about teachers now having the right to protect their students from an intruder, if someone broke into their home and threatened their family with a gun they would go crying to the police and beg them to come save their family with a gun. Yet other peoples children I guess should just sit still and wait to be murdered. Disgusting. This bill isn’t “insane” it’s common sense.
