Harold Rhoden, the lawyer, died a few months after this program aired when the small plane he was piloting hit high-tension wires in an open field on approach to Van Nuys Airport about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles. His wife and mother-in-law also died; his 13 year old daughter was badly injured. Rhoden, 66, was a WWII prisoner of war. Marc Christian died 20 years later in 2009 at age 56 from lung disease his sister attributed to heavy smoking. He never tested positive for HIV. A judge reduced the award to $5.5 million.
I'm sorry I disagree with people's perspective on him. He's sued Rock Hudson over a disease he didn't have. Doesn't take responsibility for not using protection when anyone can have aids. Then says he may make more profit by writing a tell all book. He took Rocks hard earned money. Terrible
@theamberheardplaylist6768 She was a proven liar in court. Please don't insult our intelligence . A lot of us watched the trial live. I feel such a fool for initially believing her.
marc is ckearly uin denial, THERE IS NIO WAY ROCK HUDSON LOVED MARC , HE NEVER TOIKD MARC, HE HAD HIS SECRETARY LIE, ROCK HUDSON NEVER PUT MARC IN HIS WILL, ROCK WAS CHEATINNG ON MARC. THAT IS NOT LOVE.
The audieńce was very cruel ànd rude. . From the time frame ,it hadn't been long since he had lost Rock. I think this audience showed no empathy at all to keep telling Marc that Rock mušt not have loved him.
i don't care about whether this guy is a HUSTLER or not What ROCK HUDSON did to him was wrong and this guy did not deserve this regardless. It's murder if you do not tell someone. EVEN if the other person does not get it , this is still considered ATTEMPTED MURDER TO ME
+daniel kinney Fear of getting a disease is so much worse than having it (right) LOL. It seems more like attempted robbery than murder. I worked for God's Love We Deliver in NYC and am more concerned about people with AIDS along with attempts to criminalize (won't do any good- think Rock would care?)) than those in Tennessee waxing about other people's sex lives. You made a claim elsewhere that it is illegal for PWA's to have any sex, totally ignorant. HIV affects millions and many have sex. Only a love struck schoolgirl would trust what a man who wants sex SAYS. You have to protect yourself.
Dottiecurran It is against the law to have sex with another human if you know you have HIV or AIDS. you can be prosecuted and put in prison if you pass that disease along to another human being. I am not wrong about that. That is a FACT>
daniel kinney Magic Johnson a criminal? Where? In your progressive Tenn.? Do you realize how many millions of people have HIV or Aids and enjoy full love lives? Take a look at gay personal ads where sometimes people say they have it. That is a fact and you can't do anything about it. I am not worried about getting it as I use protection. You have no right to tell ANYONE their sex lives are illegal with another consenting person. And I doubt prison would faze Rock Hudson who broke the law having gay sex period. BTW, Marc had already moved out of Rock's bedroom when he (Rock) first knew he was ill and was threatening to expose his homosexuality. Rock's former lover Tom, moved back in to care for him. Marc's care was only for money. As for you, stop trying to look ghetto and move out of the backwoods into the world. Magic Johnson is not breaking any laws with his wife so your statement is false for California. I think people with Aids have enough to deal with. I don't support hysteria and hate when someone isn't infecting others.
The only point i am making is what the law says, IF you have aids or HIV and you knowing SLEEP with another HUMAN and you do not tell them you are POSITIVE for HIV or AIDS you can be prosecuted if the person you infect gets it and they choose to have you prosecuted. That is all i am saying. I have seen it and heard it with my own eyes and ears people have went to PRISON only when they INFECT SOMEONE and did not disclose they were HIV+. I don't live in TN.
Dottiecurran During the early years of the HIV epidemic, a number of states implemented HIV-specific criminal exposure laws. These laws impose criminal penalties on people living with HIV who know their HIV status and who potentially expose others to HIV. In 1990, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which provides states with funds for AIDS treatment and care, required every state to certify that its criminal laws were adequate to prosecute any HIV-infected individual who knowingly exposed another person to HIV.1 Picture of US CourtroomCriminalization of potential HIV exposure is largely a matter of state law, although some federal legislation addresses criminalization in discrete areas, such as blood donation. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy, released by the White House in July 2010, provides some guidance regarding the issue of criminalization, noting that in some instances, existing HIV exposure laws may need to be re-examined.2 An analysis by CDC and Department of Justice researchers found that, by 2011, a total of 67 laws explicitly focused on persons living with HIV had been enacted in 33 states.3 These laws vary as to what behaviors are criminalized or result in additional penalties. In 24 states, laws require persons who are aware that they have HIV to disclose their status to sexual partners and 14 states require disclosure to needle-sharing partners. Twenty-five states criminalize one or more behaviors that pose a low or negligible risk for HIV transmission. The majority of laws identified for the analysis were passed before studies showed that antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces HIV transmission risk and most do not account for HIV prevention measures that reduce transmission risk, such as condom use, ART, or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The analysis encouraged states with HIV-specific criminal laws to use its findings to re-examine state laws, assess the laws' alignment with current evidence regarding HIV transmission risk, and consider whether the laws are the best vehicle by which to achieve their intended purposes. It should be noted that all states have general criminal laws-such as assault and battery, reckless endangerment, and attempted murder-that can and have been used to prosecute individuals for any of the above-mentioned behaviors. See a map of states with HIV-related laws. 1 Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-381; 104 Stat. 576). 2 National HIV/AIDS Strategy See recommended action 3.3 - Promote public health approaches to HIV prevention and care: State legislatures should consider reviewing HIV-specific criminal statutes to ensure that they are consistent with current knowledge of HIV transmission and support public health approaches to preventing and treating HIV. 3 Lehman, JS, Carr, MH., Nichol, AJ, et al. Prevalence and public health implications of state laws that criminalize potential HIV exposure in the United States. AIDS Behav 2014.
True. People are so ratchet. They know that they have a disease than can infect and/or kill another person but they let sex opportunity to have sex override their obligation.
Mary Carlino - This man lied, I'm sure Rock told him 'cause he wasn't infected and it makes me believe they used condom, Marc created this lie because he wanted Rock's money, he's a liar!
When I was a boy, a man in our neighborhood died of AIDS, It's funny when you're 15, and this man was 25. He seemed so much older. I remember it like it was yesterday that no one in the neighborhood would go to this man's wake. My Mom was a powerful woman who said we were going, and that was the end of that; she didn't care what the neighbors said or did not say. That was 30 years ago, and at least some things have changed for the better.
I remember when a colleague with AIDS who’d left our company returned for a visit, and I walked up and gave him a big hug. The look of shock and gratitude on his face was heartbreaking…even though we knew you couldn’t get AIDS from hugging. I felt so badly for him. Everyone must have avoided touching him. So awful.
This man lied, I'm sure Rock told him 'cause he wasn't infected and it makes me believe they used condom, Marc created this lie because he wanted Rock's money, he's a liar!
@@lanny7303 Unprotected sexual exposure to HIV doesn't necessary lead to infection. In fact, some studies have gone as far as to saying that successful HIV-1 transmission occurs only one out of 1,000 times.

Marc Christian set a precedent for future lawsuits for those who were exposed to Aids unknowingly from a partner who had knowledge that they were infected. Many people owe him gratitude for doing so.
@thegracetofollow4194 he who is without sin cast the first stone. Also, women aren't to tell men anything but be eye candy for her husband per the Bible
The audience and this horrible Host🤮He managed in the best way possible! When surrounded by pure ignorance and stupidity and still stand your ground and most important stay calm.Thats bravery for me!
Rock Hudson was so wrong for not telling him. That's why laws were put in place to place to prosecute people who knowing slept with people without protection without telling their partners.
That disease was a made up disease. Why in communities I know of, all of a sudden, people stop dying of AIDS, even though, it's proven that there are many of these people HIV carriers.
Yes he probably fancies himself as a pretty good actor pity Rock Hudson did it so much better. He showed so much love and respect for a dead man who could not defend himself. I hope he chokes on his money.
@@trina415 he could not. marc has not been with rock for a long time before he got the disease. and rock called and told everyone he slept with that he was sick, marc was not on the list because he left before while trying to blackmail. you cant just believe everything ppl tell you. BE QUIET yourself and actually read on what you are talking about
He was a sleeze by using the excuse of anorexia as well. After Karen Carpenter died I was heartbroken . After learning of this disease that she shined a light on I then realized that I had it too. This saved my life. With help I pulled myself out from this terrible disease.
Yes, Liberace used the same excuse for his deteriorating health (“watermelon diet”) to hide the fact that he had AIDS. Unfortunately for Liberace’s last lover, Cary James, he contracted HIV and died.
TheTerryE Really you knew Rock? didn't think so you have no right to say what he was yes if its true it was not the right thing but I do not believe he intentionally was trying to harm Marc maybe he was scared and when you are scared you do things you would not otherwise do and nobody stopped Marc from using protection specially if they had just met I did not watch the interview so I do not know if he said anything against Mr Hudson but if he ever did I think he is throwing the blame all on one person
April In my opinion, it is not good to comment on a video if you have not seen it, let alone comment on other people's comments. Also, try using a little punctuation, it's hard to read a bunch of run-on words & sentences without any punctuation.
I see Marc as a true pioneer, without him stepping up, we might never have seen a law pass making it ILLEGAL to pull such an evil stunt. Not that he cares about little ole me, but I'm proud of you Marc. Knowing the mind set back then, it took phenomenal amounts of courage to do what Marc did.
You are absolutely right. It was his case that was the catalyst for passing laws about failing to disclose communicable diseases (like HIV) to partners. The jury seemed to think so as well, since they awarded him MORE than he asked for.
It happened to me too, only I wasn't as lucky as Marc and I did become + at 19. Was my first boyfriend and I had just recently came out as openly gay. It was year 2000 I came out. The good medicine WAS available for me ty 4 gods grace. My once partner had full blown aids and didn't feel the need to tell me. Not even when I asked him, a few times actually, and on different occasions. It's been more than 20 years now and I've had an undetectable viral load since a month after starting the medicine. The first line of drugs had terrible side effects that many ppl couldn't or wouldn't tolerate. I'm glad I took them anyways even on some of the days when being sick outta both ends simultaneously. I'm glad because I've kept it suppressed at less than 20/ml. but almost always they find 0 Zero hiv viron particles/ml. of blood. Bc of this my immune system wasn't damaged too much. I had the hiv for about 1.5 years before I started medication. My cd4 cells are usually around 1000 and that is excellent, stronger than many ppl, most ppl even, and those whom had never have had any sort of immune disease, difficiency, or hiv exposure at all. Just blessed to have proper treatment and my health. Praise God! TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED!!!
Can you imagine how betrayed you would feel if your partner did this to you? Props to this man for bringing attention to this at a time were people were so ignorant about it
Indeed and it shows the attitudes of some people who choose that lifestyle, of sleeping around, getting infected and then no regard whatsoever for the people they claim to love. Once Rock knew he not only was HIV positive but also had developed AIDS he had a duty to tell Marc and refrain from unsafe sex with people. It would be interesting to know how long Rock knew into that 3 year relationship because AIDS doesn't develop overnight, it usually starts to show symptoms about 8-10 years after contracting HIV so my guess is he already KNEW he had AIDS before he started that relationship and had unprotected sex with Marc. To me that's no different to manslaughter in terms of the law. I don't think doctors should be forced to break patient confidentially but they should tell patients they have a duty to tell partners and that if they don't, they could face legal consequences and then doctors could be used to provide evidence they ignored a doctors instruction later. Or perhaps have some mechanism so doctors can notify the partners doctors of the infected patient (if known) they need to come in for a checkup without breaking patient confidentially.
Many years later, coming across this episode, I am FLABBERGASTED at the infinitely idiotic questions that came from the audience. Kudos to Mark Christian. Impressive man.
@@somerset8088. The east and west coasts live in an EVEN BIGGER bubble because they can’t comprehend a Midwest even exists. I lived in both places and personally experienced the coastal ignorance and myopia. One friend from NY asked me if a woman could get AIDS from a man who had it. WHAT??? Yes, east coast is BACKWARD. WEST COAST AS WELL.
I hope Marc has gone on and had a good life. Very intelligent and well spoken. He did a good job with this interview. Phil is an idiot. That’s just my opinion. Good job lawyer!! Excellent attorney.
He was our neighbor for years in the Hollywood Knolls neighborhood. He lived in a beautiful Mid-Century home and generally stuck to himself and wasn't particularly friendly w/neighbors possibly because of what he went through. I saw him about a month before he died about 10-years ago from a sudden lung infection. He still looked great in his mid 50s at the time of his death.
I have dealt with attorneys for various problems as a teacher in Grand Rapids Public Schools in Grand Rapids Michigan. One particular instance was that someone I knew and encouraged to work in our school system, allegedly slept with the superintendent and his other male lover. Later the man, I helped get into school district was fired. He attempted to Blackmail and extort money from the superintendent and the school district otherwise he's going to expose his secret. Even though I had a personal protection order against this person the police would not help me because of the situation of high-profile superintendent. I was forced to sign a confidentiality agreement and tell everything I knew about the situation. I was the one that got in trouble. I was retaliated over and over again until I retired in 2017. I have had three different attorneys over the years. I got nothing. The other person was given hush money. I was sexually assaulted by other employees and my name sullied because I helped a person get into the school system. I was being held responsible for another man with doing with his penis. Even this complicit School Board did not help me or follow the school policies. In Grand Rapids Public Schools you can suck and f*ck your way to the top. There is a pervasive swinging culture within our school system . It's like an Open Secret. The people have sex with each other and protect each other it's like a big sex club. The people that run our school system are complicit in this evil that was perpetuated against me and the children in my classroom. The female superintendent that followed Dr. Taylor was also incompetent. She was an evil and vindictive woman exploited the children's education in my classroom by setting me up to fail over and over again. No one would help me not even my attorneys. When I slipped and fell at work and injured my shoulder. I had multiple surgeries it took 3 years to get my settlement and I didn't even get half of what I deserve for the out-of-pocket costs. I was a victim of being too nice and expecting these people to be kind to me after I told the truth about what I knew. I'm almost 60 years old now and I learned that Sex and Money Make the World Go Round And people lie and do anything to protect the reputation just like Rock Hudson did.
Right? I cheered when she said what she said. The audiences reaction was disgusting as well. You can tell they all felt safe to laugh because they thought of it as “a gay mans issue”.
@@JUANIGNAC10 uhm, except the host fully backed her and even after the call ended refused to let it go and kept her voice going challenging his audience asking them "what are you laughing about?" He also exposed that homophobic black guy forcing him to admit he thought being gay was wrong. This host did a great job.
@@nw6070 I don't see it that way. He felt embarrassed an compelled to say that little decent comment after 41 minutes of laughter. He even added "Oh we need some humor to be able to digest such terrible matters" or something like that. Clearly the "humor" was not because they felt Aids was their problem. It was acause they thought gays were the ones getting it and they were enjoying that.
When my son was born in 1983 at Stanford, he was a Premi. He was born with Craniosynostosis. He required surgery. After the surgery the doctors stated he needed a transfusion. At that time, you could NOT give your own blood unlike now. Stanford stated at that time they had been testing blood and he was likely not to get aids, but they wouldn't know for approximately ten years if not within a year or so. Every year I would take my baby back to Stanford for the test. His father left us and with no income I decided to move back with family. After the third test I decided NOT to test him and if he got it or not I would just have to deal with it when he did. I'm glad to say he was well until he turned sixteen and going through puberty. He started having seizures. They performed an MRI and discovered that he had a scar on his temporal lobe. When they performed the surgery on him at 16 months, they had scared it when they performed the surgery. He has epilepsy and has to take medications the rest of his life. Always something. I'm thankful he is still alive and thank God every day.
Rock Hudson had an ethical responsibility to tell his partner(s). Evidently he didn't. Marc Christian helped set a legal standard. In 1989 there was not enough Scientific data to be certain of the incubation period in contracting HIV not AIDS. Christian may have been awarded an inflated amount of money but there was NOT a guarantee he was to see any of it. THATS what happened here. I applaud him for simply fighting to set some precedent where the severity of the irresponsibility was concerned.
+Cee Jay Using fear of Aids to win money isn't a legal standard. What others say or don't say before sex isn't subject to the approval or disapproval of those who can't get any, or Christian bigots like Deb Scott. Rock's only responsibility was not to pass on the disease and he fulfilled that. Funny, those who never protested forcing people like Rock to hide only protest not being more open.
Shame on the people in the audience who are judgemental towards Marc Christian. I like how the female caller reprimanded the audience for being insensitive. I don't like the people who badger the victim.
The lawyer Harold Rhoden died shortly after this interview when the plane he was piloting malfunctioned and crashed in California. His wife and mother in law also died instantly. His 13 year old daughter survived for 3 days. Tragic.
What an interesting, tragic and awful thing to discover! I really liked his demeanor in this interview! Mark must’ve been traumatized. RIP to the attorney and his family!
I was in high school when this interview was done. Glad some serious improvements in the treatment/understanding of AIDS, and in our treatment towards LGBT community continue to improve. Rock Hudson was just 1 example of someone hiding their diagnosis of AIDS to those in a sexual relationship then, this helped change that situation. Marc done the right thing, and in a time when....things were not like they are now.
Very interesting to watch this from 30 years ago! I don't think many can fully grasp what it must've been like for Marc at the time of this interview. He handled this very well. And thank goodness to the caller at 40:47 finally someone with some levity to how flippantly Phil and the audience were treating the subjects at hand
Absolutely! I thought Phillip was a real ass-hole here. He also would have known with some of the questions he asked Marc, his staunch followers in the audience would have made it worse. Disgraceful as far as I’m concerned.
Very handsome, brave, unassuming, soft spoken, respectful, and answered ALL questions with modesty and honesty. Wow...The audience is just a prime example of how cruel people can be. This is why people do NOT want to come out about their status‼️ Regardless, he still wanted to be there for him during his illness and that speaks volume to me. He really loved RH too💯
Another sad fact connected to this case: Harold Rhoden, the lawyer, along with his wife and mother, was killed in a plane crash in 1989. His 13 year old daughter was critically injured in that same crash and died days later. Rock Hudson's death and all connected to this whole case was sad in lots of ways. May they all rest in peace.
We have to remember that this interview took place in 1989 -- more than 30 years ago. People still weren't exposed and open to the liberated lifestyles we celebrate today. With that said, I thought that Marc Christian spoke with such grace, elegance, intelligence, clarity, and dignity.

June 2, 2009, at age 56, Marc Christian (MacGinnis) died of pulmonary issues due to smoking, and never did contract AIDS during his lifetime. The 21 million dollar lawsuit was eventually reduced to 5.5 million, which is what Marc received after paying his attorneys fees. RIP, Marc.
Marc Christian seems very sincere, unlike the man he unfortunately teamed up with, Rock Hudson who was an absolute CAD and used him despicably. The fear and anguish Marc has been through is just unimaginable, and as for the swine Hudson not leaving him a cent even though he patently believed he had given Marc a death sentence, well, that says it all. Rock Hudson was nobody's hero, he was as morally low as it is possible to get without being underground.
a moral person cares about those suffering from Aids not those who use the fear of it to win money. A disease they never get. Gay relations are not for you to judge. Baths and backrooms and other no talk sex places were popular. Rock was forced to hide and then you condemn him for it. You should understand that time as I see from your picture
I condemn him for hiding it from his sexual partner and having unprotected sex with this young man. That' s unconscionable. Despicable. And to think he never left that young man one red cent. He did not know he had not given him AIDS. In fact, he actually said he had "probably killed him!" Denise, have you ever known what it is like living with the fear of having contracted AIDS? Go ask a policeman or woman or a nurse or doctor who has had to go through that. You have no idea at all, do you?
Pamela Valemont The dead can't defend themselves. But no one will say they had any sex with you. I don't ask a policeman about my sex life and I don't fear diseases. I care for people with Aids instead. Making someone a pariah and then demanding open ness doesn't work
I’m really surprised of Donohue’s flippancy and ignorance about this subject. I would love to see his reaction to HIS own behavior on this segment NOW in 2018.
@@cultfilmfreakreviews Hahaha, you really want to play politics while the current republican administration is doing what it can to roll back lgbt rights.
I remember people thought this was a cringe worthy insensitive homophobic interview where Donahue kept using old fashion homophobic terms and concepts to describe the situation. People felt bad for and protective of Rock Hudson’s boyfriend as a result. Just so everyone knows it was seen that way in 1989 too. It really turned people off of Donahue and his show. He seemed yet again like an obnoxious loud mouth.
Doris Day told Rock Hudson she wanted to take care of him and nurse him back to health when she saw him on their last visit together... He told her he had a bad case of the flu ... He kept his secrets all the way to the end.
He only told some of his close friends he had AIDS because he didn't want people to judge him having AIDS. Doris Day knew he was gay but he didn't tell her he had AIDS.
Poor guy. I can't even imagine the mental anguish while he waited for the test results came back. Rock Hudson was quite selfish for doing that. He knew
Yeah. I totally understand why he felt compelled to do this interview. Inquiring minds want to know, but if I was his true friend I would tell him that the interview thing is a bad idea. Marc Christian was demonized in the gay community for it, it wasn't; worth it. He should have stayed shut.
@Les Moore But chances are he probably wore a condom since he didn´t get infected and they probably had sex more than once in the months after Rock learned about his positive HIV status.
Preservatives existed and were used long before that sir, it´s a historical fact and for the sake of public education this must be made clear, I'm not saying this for petty skirmishes, believe me.
I've only just come across this video. I was very impressed with Marc's seemingly honest responses, and the dignity of his demeanor. I can believe Marc felt very angry and extremely hurt at the betrayal from someone he cared so deeply for, apparently right up to the end. However, I can't quite believe that Rock Hudson was in such a state of denial about his diagnosis, that he would not confide in Marc at all. I'm glad Marc won his lawsuit.
Wow - this interview started out real rough - I mean ROUGH... but after that, it sort of became one of the best and most calm interviews I think I have ever watched. The amount if patient clarity and truth that was carefully discussed is rare today.
I NOTICE WHEN A GUY IS GAY. ALL OF SUDDEN WOMEN JUST SAYING HE IS SO HANDSOME AND BEAUTIFUL ETC. TRUST ME IF HE CAME OUT STRAIGHT. U WOULDNT SAY THAT AT ALL.
This was in 1989 and Phil acted appalled at the subject of a Dr. of an AIDS patient, causing the patient to inform all of his or her sexual partners. This was common practice at the time conducted by the CDC. Phil Donahue disputed this as unfair and going against the patient's privacy records. This disease at this time was a PURE DEATH SENTENCE. Phil was. so ignorant to the potential victims and casualties left in the wake of this virus.
Rock Hudson was once married and he did not tell that woman that he was a homosexual. She learned about it after three years of marriage with him. Larry King had interviewed her and she told her story about RH and their marriage. She said he started having affairs with men and ignored her totally. She divorced him, she never married again and seemed to be still negatively emotional effected by that experience in that interview.
The interviewer is so rude and tries to be so patronising. Marc Christian is fabulous in this interview, so cool and so decent. Doesn’t rise to it at all. The age gap wouldn’t even be mentioned if it was an old man and a younger woman. The hypocrisy is unbelievable.
I actually do not see it that way. Phil had to present both sides. His approach was more from a very misunderstanding and ignorant public than his personal feelings. I say that not actually liking Phil that much, lol.
m williams to be honest I haven’t seen that much of him, but he seemed to sneer a lot at both Marc Christian and the lawyer and seemed to encourage the idiot audience.
Marc had every right to sue, and if I was him I would have done exactly the same. If Rock had AIDS but was unaware of it himself it would have been one thing, but to have it, KNOW you've got it and continue to conceal and outright lie about his condition, and put an innocent person at risk was incredibly selfish and borderline evil. Just because you are going down doesnt mean you should bring the innocent down with you.
+Eccentricka1 innocent? eh? Instead of trashing a dead man who can not defend himself in favor of someone clearly out for money, you should look at yourself. When you call people with HIV guilty, don't wonder why they keep it a secret
Denise Coffin Trashing? Not once did I hear this guy make a disparaging or malicious comment about the deceased. He is simply upset about what COULD have happened...and I think he has a right to be because he DID respectfully ask Rock if he was carrying the disease while he was still alive, and he had every opportunity to be honest with Marc but Rock was the one who disrespected him by LYING to him! If you were sold a car and wasn't told that the particular make of car had a tendency to explode or for the brakes to fail despite enquiring, wouldn't you be angry about not being informed? ESPECIALLY if the dealer who sold it to you ALREADY knew this? I'm pretty sure most people would be, so it has nothing to do with disrespecting the dead.
Back in Rocks time they Hollyweird hid things like this. Nobody except maybe a select few ever knew Rock was gay or bisexual. He also liked females at one time and was even married to a female at one time. He had an image to protect in his mind and that was more important. It wasn't until after he died that he came out his death outed him. He put this mans life in danger and he had the right to sue the estate. By law now you have to tell if you have it back then you didn't. There is a movie you should see that tells how HIV and AIDS was found. Its very old don't know if you can even find it but you need to see And the Band played on. You have to understand it was like the dark ages of HIV and AIDS and so many people have died even from blood transfusions from tainted blood. The cocktails of medications we have now that prolong life didn't exist back then.
b52gf16c Exactly. You would think black people would be more sympathetic to gay people...considering we are both minorities. But I find African-Americans to be the most homophobic people today!
You can see Marc Christian's good heart...totally above board and in keeping with that is brave and setting an excellent example and learning at the same time about his decisions in life. I admire him...I see his credibility...he obviously is not dripping in ego and not a money seeker...good man... Marc Christian, he died of pulmonary problems (per what I read) June 2 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.Dec 5, 2009 only 56 years old...RIP Marc...may God Bless you and keep you...always... Amen.
I found Marc to be very honest and sincere as well. I found it so sad that he died so young. I think his lawsuit brought some much needed awareness to the subject of AIDS and responsibility. I good friend of mine contracted AIDS from her serious boyfriend of 3 years after he spent a year in jail. Ignorance can be deadly unfortunately.
@@stjohnssoupPossibly. There are same-sex relationships in men’s prison (coerced as well as consensual), and there are a number of cases of prisoners contracting HIV through same-sex contact.
This poor guy. If I was sitting in that chair getting those questions I'd be horrified. Some of those people are so fucking ignorant. That one caller who told the audience off was a fucking legend.
+The Scran Line You are correct to call them ignorant...but remember, ignorance just means not knowing. It doesn't mean they are haters or stupid. This was 1989. By today's standards they do seem really backwards. But back then, trailblazers like Phil Donahue put theses topics on the air when no one else wanted to even acknowledge these ideas. It's in part BECAUSE of shows like these and brave albeit ignorant audiences that we can look back now and see how far we've come.
+Phildog1 I doubt that very much because under the gag of political correctness and the tendency human beings have to follow the pack and think themselves to be"with it " the natural abhorrence for sexual perversion will always be there.
In 1989, this topic was big, but was not discussed on television to often. The fact that the entire show it is referred to as AIDS, and not HIV, shows at what level the medical field knew of HIV and AIDS. Just 3 years later Magic Johnson would come forward and announce that he was HIV positive. That was big, big news at the time. HIV and AIDS are still very real. Be careful who you share your sex life with, be cautious, use protection.
For all the haters of Marc Christian - he died in 2009 at age 56 from pulmonary disease (heavy smoking). He was awarded $21.7 million from the jury. Later amended to $5.5 million. He settled out of court for a much smaller amount. The jury awarded him this huge amount of money because they thought this was "outrageous conduct" on Rock Hudson's part. The jury said this was the ultimate in personal horror, the fear of a slow, agonizing death and not being told their sexual partner had AIDS.
+Debra Scott Wow. I didn't know he passed. I met him at a bar in West Hollywood maybe 2006-2007? Very nice man. He was doing something rather funny and outrageous in the bar, but would rather not post about it.
+Babsy Boone You keep talking out the left side of your vulgar mouth and never say anything of substance. You are a coward in the face of AIDS. AIDS kills and continues to kill at an alarming rate. Face the truth and stop trying to use me as your way out of the truth.
+Babsy Boone Little Ms. Babs, get real. Whatever Marc Christian was doing in that bar is none of your business, nor mine. People are allowed to make comments without your superficial intrusions. YOU, obviously, have never experienced death from AIDS from a very close loved one or even a dear friend. And once you have experienced this absolute horrific, painful, degrading, emotional death - you will never know what you are talking about. People like you are just full of bullshit and have no idea what you are really talking about. Marc Christian brought this to the forefront of the AIDS epidemic (from unprotected sex) because of a long term sexual partner that did not tell him he was infected. You say that Rock Hudson is your hero - you are so dillutional. Little girl, this is not the Sunday morning funny papers.
yes he could not answer some intelligent questions by the host. for example that by forcing doctors to spill the beans on their hiv positive patients you would have been discouraging patients from going to doctors in the first place. the lawyer skirted around some other questions too but answered some well i agree.
I agree he should have won the lawsuit against Rock Hudson. He had a disregard for you. You caused him mental anguish worrying after he found out you had aids until he found out whether he had it or not. You eere the victim. Good for you.
The audience was tacky for laughing and snickering throughout the interview. I am not pro gay but Marc was a class act who sat there and took it in style. I saw one dumb woman lift her fists up and put both thumbs down. How un-classy can you get.
No one can judge Rock Hudson or Marc Christian for what happened to their relationship -- no one knows for sure what goes on behind closed doors. In this interview Marc maintained his dignity in his responses whatever his motives are.
Some of the audience members are so ignorant this man is sitting there telling his story of how he was exposed to a Deadly virus and he could have died and there laughing about his sexuality back then it shows how ignorant cruel and stupid people are some people are like that today Bless this Man for the courage and strength to come forward and tell his story back then it shows how courageous someone can be and how stupid some people are
What a sympathetic nice man this Marc is . I wish him all the best . The audience was in hyenas level . Marc managed the attacks with excellent intelligence and the ethical dignity . 🌹🌹🌹
I was upset with the audience for taking cheap innuendo"s and disrespectful comments and questions, like Marc was a circus freak. Clearly this audience was in it for shock value. Marc and his attorney were intelligent. It is a shame the audience only wanted to judge this man without knowing all of the facts. Prayers for those people who cast the first STONE. Karma.
Marc died early from pulmonary disease from smoking...many people under stress ( Marc constantly worried when do I get aides?) Often increase their smoking x3...
He was entitled to every last cent.It was absolutely criminal what Rock Hudson did to this innocent man. What amazes me is that Phil Donahue doesn't get it at all!
Very sad- This interview shows how far we have come- Well, hopefully any way- In attitude, knowledge, medical progress- Mr. Christian was put through so much- Happy to hear he was awarded millions- Even so, like he said, no amount of money is worth putting someone at risk for contracting AIDS or placing your life at risk.- No one should have to endure what he endure, betrayed by the person he loved and then be thrown out of his home- I was sorry to read that he passed away a few years ago at the young age of 56- I can't help but believe that all of this played a role in shortening his life. He seemed to me as such a wonderful man.
I know this was a while ago but I was very disappointed in Donahue and this interview - He was very insensitive and mocked some serious comments - He was pandering to the poor taste of the audience and getting laughs - Marc had more class than anyone else in the room -
Love that caller who called out the audience! The audience is full of so many animals. Imagine thinking this is a joke. You can tell most of them didn’t care because they thought of it as only a “gay issue”
What a selfish, immoral man Rock Hudson was playing Russian Roulette with another person's life and someone he supposedly loved. He didn't know what love was.
I was thinking the same thing the woman who called in at 40:51 was thinking. The audience was rather callous in their snickering (and I'm glad Donahue agree despite the audience's behavior). Then again, it was 1989 so it's (homosexuality, AIDS) probably something they themselves were ignorant of. I think Marc deserved some money (Maybe not as much as he received, but definitely something). At the same time, I woudn't compare Hudson to some of the gay men who do this today. He was a high profile person in a time where people were not sympathetic towards gay people and he probably didn't know how to handle it (combine that with the way the disease affected him mentally). I also read Hudson stopped having sexual relations with him (probably because of his HIV diagnosis). I feel horrible for the Hudson dying alone but the whole situation is just sad.
Marc looked very honest and sincere with his answers. Hudson had an obligation to tell Marc which he didn't.
Plain and simple 🎉
He was very clear and articulate.
Marc was gay
That part
Marc and his lawyer are really ground breaking. They changed the game and probably saved many people’s lives.
He answered each question with ease, grace, and assertiveness. He was not to be toyed with.👌🏼
Donahue comes off like a Tom Snyder.
@@taroman7100 I met him. He’s definitely not like Tom Snyder. Really. : o )
I'm sorry I disagree with people's perspective on him. He's sued Rock Hudson over a disease he didn't have. Doesn't take responsibility for not using protection when anyone can have aids. Then says he may make more profit by writing a tell all book. He took Rocks hard earned money. Terrible

In 1990, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which provides states with funds for AIDS treatment and care, required every state to certify that its criminal laws were adequate to prosecute any HIV-infected individual who knowingly exposed another person to HIV.1
Picture of US CourtroomCriminalization of potential HIV exposure is largely a matter of state law, although some federal legislation addresses criminalization in discrete areas, such as blood donation. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy, released by the White House in July 2010, provides some guidance regarding the issue of criminalization, noting that in some instances, existing HIV exposure laws may need to be re-examined.2
An analysis by CDC and Department of Justice researchers found that, by 2011, a total of 67 laws explicitly focused on persons living with HIV had been enacted in 33 states.3 These laws vary as to what behaviors are criminalized or result in additional penalties.

So awful.
Thank God times have changed. What two consenting adults do is no ones business.

That’s a powerful comment!! 👏🏽
Tragic.
Brian Langston that’s Tragic 😢

OMG! How very sad.! The whole story is so sad.
Gawd!
WHAT A IGNORANT NASTY INTERVIEWER 😮
Definitely deserved more respect than he was given. 🤦🏽♀️. He saved lives

Phil is embarrassing and cringe to watch, and listen to.
Absolutely! I thought Phillip was a real ass-hole here. He also would have known with some of the questions he asked Marc, his staunch followers in the audience would have made it worse.
Disgraceful as far as I’m concerned.

This was in 1989 and Phil acted appalled at the subject of a Dr. of an AIDS patient, causing the patient to inform all of his or her sexual partners. This was common practice at the time conducted by the CDC. Phil Donahue disputed this as unfair and going against the patient's privacy records. This disease at this time was a PURE DEATH SENTENCE. Phil was. so ignorant to the potential victims and casualties left in the wake of this virus.
Phil Donahue was infamous for playing devils advocate when it came to questioning his guests, it was his shtick.
Everyone was ignorant and the stigma destroyed lives. It wasn’t protected by the ADA.

I'm pretty sure most people would be, so it has nothing to do with disrespecting the dead.
totally agree, if you know you have a virus and dont share then its attempted murder.

In 1989, this topic was big, but was not discussed on television to often.
