Some fun facts I didn't mention in description... Mr. Self Destruct... For the intro, I sampled the sounds from the movie 'THX 1138' and chopped it up just like Trent did. Piggy... Background note over chorus is a harmonica. Drum solo was meticulously programmed to (mostly) match original drum solo. Heresy... Main synth notes in intro and verses are notes sampled from my acoustic Guitar and Bass played with a sequencer. This was also the first song I stated with when making these covers. Distorted high pitched notes in bridge are from a plastic flute I sampled. March of the Pigs... Not much to say, other than it was one of the harder songs to make. Closer... "Tape hiss" sound effect is actually me spinning a container of salt. High Hat sound is two lids of cooking pots hit together and pitch was raised. Spoken word section was done by my girlfriend. Distorted guitar chords after spoken word is my acoustic guitar with lots of distortion and pitch raised an octave. End piano was done by my friend Scott. Ruiner... Chords over "How'd it get so big" section, were more sampled notes from Harmonica. Guitar solo was indeed a distorted acoustic guitar, just like all guitar part on album. Distortion was always added after recordings. The Becoming... Intro and main synth sounds were more acoustic guitar samples, some pitched up, some pitched down. Background screams done by my friend Scott. I do not want this... percussion breakdown section was me having fun with an old digitech RP100 pedal. Distorting and adding effects to drum loop and bass. Big Man with a Gun... Ending screams of "Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!" and "Me and my fucking gun!" were done by my friend Scott. A Warm place... Begins with more plastic toy flute. vocal "aaahh" sounds were samples of my friend Tiffany. I took the vocals from another song that I had recorded of her, sampled them and played the chords with my keyboard. Some harmonica comes in after that. Most everything else was acoustic guitars and Bass. Eraser... Buzzing sounds was me making noises into a plastic cup. Same with breathing sounds. Main synth is samples of my Bass, distorted and played with a sequencer. Reptile... Intro ambient sounds were samples I made from a scene in the movie 'The Abyss' just like Trent did. Robotic percussion sounds were samples I took from the movie Robocop. I was just having fun, being creative. :D Main snare sound over verses is a sample of me shaking a box of macaroni. Real snare comes in for chorus. Weird voice over the quiet bridge before last verse and chorus is another sample from Robocop. The Downward Spiral... Ambient humming sound was a recording of my bedroom with my air conditioner on, I recorded with my phone, pitched it down and added distortion. Fly sounds were taken from a website with free samples because I didn't have any flies around to record. Its the only sound on album not sampled or recorded by me. Sorry. ;P Scream loop was a sample of Scott I took from 'Big man with a Gun' A quick section when he screamed the word "Gun" stretched and looped to sound like a long, weird scream. Hurt... Ambient sound over intro and entire song was wind that I recorded at the Beach with my phone, added distortion. Main guitar was a mix of acoustic steel string and acoustic nylon string guitars. Each note was sampled and I played riff with my keyboard. More harmonica behind "what have I become, my sweetest friend". Humming sounds at end of song was a ground loop from my Bass amp. Held finger over guitar cable while amp was on. Hope it was fun reading this.
sorry to be offtopic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost the password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Fisher Israel I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This is actually less depressing but very fun to listen to as it is a complete remake of my favorite album. In a way I am listening to TDS for the first time again. How very, very pleasant.
Daaaaamn when i searched "NIN the downward spiral cover" i wasn't expecting to literally find a full album cover xdxd this is another level of cover it's fucking amazing
Amazing!!! These are honestly some of the beat covers that I have ever heard. You truly matched the rusty decaying sounds of The Downward Spiral. Without using synths proves that you really listened to their album and as I also did, you imagined where those sounds were coning from.
this is going to sound insane, but please bear with me. the first time i listened to this album (fantastic, unbelievable job, by the way) i could have SWORN i heard a single gunshot sample from Mr Self Destruct at the tail end of Hurt. i havent been able to hear it again. ordinarily this would answer my question, but i have to know - am i insane, going deaf, both? if it is in fact there, it is seriously the icing on the cake and such an incredible touch to an amazing cover/interpretation of the album. if not, well, its still really really great and i guess ill just have to schedule an appt with my doctor.
Amazing, could you explain what you played on The Downward Spiral after the main motif? I mean the dissonant sounding acoustic strumming at 56:56 I've been trying to figure that out for years and this sounds pretty much like the album version.
Whoa! I didn't read the description until a third into listening. Dude! It is insane that you have done this using all acoustic instruments and prepared percussion (the kitchenware and such)! I honestly had no idea just from listening. This is not just fantastic to listen to. It is also extremely impressive on a technical level. It's amazing to me that you took the time to craft this great cover record and have the technical ability and artistic understanding to pull it off. Super rad!
Respect bro! I had a thought of doing this years ago too but you actually followed through. Impressed that you've sourced all the sounds organically, Ruiner especially was killer, the harmonica was brilliant. I Do Not Want This as well, you've nailed those sounds
Found this cover way back in 2015, still remember it to this day. Coming back to revisit. I love it, man. Beautiful, clean and inspired. You deserve way more views.
Thanks so much! No problem, by the way. I can’t take any kind of revenue for this. The downward spiral means a lot to me. Such a perfect album. It seems kind of trivial to say, but I really think it was “The Wall” of it’s time.
At times I think I am hearing Trent so you have his delivery and tone, his guitar, production techniques. You are 5 people, cos he was not alone on that album. He would be pretty blown away, I think. You are definitely talented as a musician, sound designer/engineer, and producer. I like it a lot because it is very close to NIN but very different too, which shows you have something good going on. So sell it to Cleopatra Records or some label that does Industrial - Metropolis maybe. If you write your own stuff, I would like to hear that! 30k views? Way cool.
Its really great to see all the positive feedback on youve received on this cover. It really is SO well done. EVERY single time we listen to this we point out something different to eachother. There ALWAYS a surprise and its a GOOD surprise. Never cheesy or like there was a lack of ideas. For Real, congrats!! What a cool change!!! SO COOOOOL!! WHERES TRENTS APPROVAL ON THIS?? WTF, Reznor?? Get in on this!! Its true flattety of a such an important record. Ive never heard such a compliment, EVER.
Flawless with a new inspiration for this masterpiece. I'm a cardiologist and have playlists in the background while operating. This has officially been added. Well done.
Really really happy with this. It was a hugely influential album for me in the 90's, and I get to discover it from another angle now thanks to you. Congrats, it's really somethin else! :D
Just got to hurt believing that this whole production was by nin and then read the description, you truly have done an awesome job , I love down the spiral but this is much better
Is that one of those blow in party favors in Mr. Self Destruct, or a kazoo? Either way, it's fucking genius. So glad this pooped up in my youtube recommendations.
Nah, they're just acoustic guitars with really weird distortion. :D There are parts where I used a Harmonica and it had a really cool sound. You can hear them in the background of the chorus for 'Ruiner' at 22:54
I'm curious, you sampled the beating audio from THX 1138 for "Mr. Self Destruct", why didn't you sample the screams from Robot Jox for "The Becoming"? Amazing project here. Very glad you did "A Warm Place" justice.
Amazing work! You really captured a lot of what the original work means to me. The reverb "you can have it all" sounded even nicer than the original. This album is like the musical version of Fight Club for me. We see an antihero slowly break down into madness with cognitive distortions and solipism/nihilism driving him to his death. In a weird way, this album serves as a positive reminder and a warning. I've never head something so gritty, musical and emotional at the same time. My only complaint with this remake is that there's something funky going on with the bass drum reverb if I'm hearing it right. It's not a huge issue though. I just notice it because I adore this album's drum sound!
Whoa!!!! Holy shit!! Amazing! we are loving this. My girlfreind and i have been fans since highschool. We saw them together for the first in the 1995. We are still together and still collecting every mix / live and going to shows. This is fucking great. We've been blasting this constantly lately, Lol. Thank You!!! She just fucking flipped when I came upon this. So cool. Such a unique trip yet, so smooth and a comfortable variation of a fucking classic. Its got a very sexy edge to some if it. Its not just a noisy and busy attempt. Theres a regular place for this quite often around our house. Such an evolution. Its almost nerdy how its so smart. We love it. Thanks!!!! Peace.
I just discovered this. I'm blown away. Like when the flaming lips did darkside of the moon, u stayed true to the original but made it your own. Truly amazing work.
I remember back in 6th? 7th? Grade I heard your cover of a warm place in a video and if I'm not wrong the link in the description lead me here and I remember downloading the entire video as audio and just listening to it non-stop. While I haven't really listened to any other NIN albums properly I'm thankful that you introduced me to this wonderful album.
have you ever gone to a new restaurant and you order a dish that you really like at some other restaurant expecting roughly the same thing, only this new place fixes it in an entirely different way--like it's the same dish, same basic ingredients, same concept, but somehow it tastes entirely different and at first you're all like 🤔yeah I dunno about this, and it's def not the same but it's what you ordered so you keep eating it, and you make up your mind like well the first restaurant does it better, but now that you've had a taste of this new place you develop a craving for *their* version? I mean, it is just like that my dudes.
Really nice cover of a great album. You added your own style, but retained the essence of the original album. Sometimes the more stripped down version does not work as well, but often it adds a new layer and gives it a slightly different vibe. In general it has a more organic sound compared to the original. I salute you for this great cover, keep up the good work.
You guys nailed this! I was wondering how you'd cover this with songs like Mr. Self Destruct on there, but you had a really nice approach. With The Downward Spiral being one of my favorite albums, I have to say that these are the best covers I've heard for all of these songs, even Hurt! Awesome tribute album. I love it and I hope it can be downloaded/purchased at some point (would definitely be worth paying for).
Yea! Cool that you noticed that! I started working on it around October, the year before and meant it to be a 20th anniversary tribute. I worked on it in my spare time and also was writing/recording my own original music which became an E.P. that I published in January 2014. If I didn't give myself the deadline of March 8th, I would have been trying to polish it up and add more but I like how raw and homemade it ended up sounding. Thanks for checking it out, man!
Truly great work. Covering NIN you have to strike a fine balance between attempting to match the tambre of the noise and synth and make departures for your own purposes. I am a harsh harsh critic, but what you have done with this can only be called mastery. Trent should take notice.
I have nothing but listened to the first song and will listen to the rest later. I nevertheless commend you on such a remarkable journey in covering my favorite album ever.
This is some serious gourmet sh!t. Usually, I would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice, cover. and you spring this serious gourmet sh!t on me.
Do you think youd ever do a breakdown video for any of these tracks? I'm so interested in seeing your thought process and just how you managed to pull this off haha.
I was quite excited to see how you'd reproduce the crazy warbling sound at the beginning of Big Man With A Gun, sad that it just got cut entirely. Still an insanely impressive production.
How did you recreate the acoustic riff from 56:58-57:36? I know the chords are G and Em but I can’t figure out how to get that awesome muted, out of tune sound like on the album
I tuned the guitar really low, so it had a kind of out of tune 'floppy' sound. I also bent the strings around a little as I was playing. I think I recorded a couple different guitars to make that part. One was playing a low octave, one a high octave, and probably another in between harmony. This also added to that creepy out of tune sound.
I. Mr. Self Destruct II. Piggy III. Heresy Extra 1. March of the Pigs IV. Closer V. Ruiner VI. The Becoming VII. I don't want this Extra 2. Big Man with a Gun Extra 3. A Warm Place VIII. Eraser IX. Reptile X. Downward Spiral Extra 4. Hurt
Ok. So. I am one of those youtube user that daily go to this site and enjoy without commenting. But here dear Yaggenhimen, i can not still silent. This absolutely BLEW MY MIND. I can not even describe it. This album is my favorit of Nine Inch Nails and is probably on my top#10 fav album ever. And you sir did an absolute AWESOME Job . Thank you VERY Much for that ! Now please, let us download this gem, put a download link or whatever. Please do not let us just enjoy it with UA-cam quality compression. Cheers from France \m/ !

Daaaaamn when i searched "NIN the downward spiral cover" i wasn't expecting to literally find a full album cover xdxd this is another level of cover it's fucking amazing
The original was creepy in a demonic dark web video sort of way. This is Creepy in a salad fingers type of way. I’m not complaining.
You have to get Trent to notice this. It's crazy good! I love it.
Feels like a PS1 de-make of the album. Cool vibe.
There comes a point in every man’s life when he’s gotta just suck it up and cover the entire downward spiral album. You did a good job.
The fact that you didn't use any synths makes this incredibly awesome
I mean, he used samplers.
Amazing!!! These are honestly some of the beat covers that I have ever heard. You truly matched the rusty decaying sounds of The Downward Spiral. Without using synths proves that you really listened to their album and as I also did, you imagined where those sounds were coning from.
Man, this is simultaneously original and faithful to NIN. Amazing work! So glad I stumbled upon this.
Heresy Intro is MASSIVE. I had so much fun with the Self Destruct kazoo sound in the chorus and the goofy sounds at the beggining of March of the pigs
this is going to sound insane, but please bear with me. the first time i listened to this album (fantastic, unbelievable job, by the way) i could have SWORN i heard a single gunshot sample from Mr Self Destruct at the tail end of Hurt. i havent been able to hear it again. ordinarily this would answer my question, but i have to know - am i insane, going deaf, both? if it is in fact there, it is seriously the icing on the cake and such an incredible touch to an amazing cover/interpretation of the album. if not, well, its still really really great and i guess ill just have to schedule an appt with my doctor.

This is so good. I've spent more than a decade trying to cover NIN properly. You've done it.
This praise does not come lightly.
What an incredible project!

This is a very surprising reimagined version of this album. It is simultaneously very faithful & very different. Well done❤👏🤟

Honestly I love your interpretation here. The instrumentation is stellar and a solid deviation from the original.

@@oldwestdemons hey asshole .
Wow. Cannot begin to say how sick this is. Capturing the essence of NIN's style is very hard to do. You pulled it off.
Koodos, sir.
Your mastery of your instruments and the technology is pure genius!!
