  • Wanting to hike to the summit of a 14er? Here is a loadout of the equipment I take on a typical summer climb to above fourteen thousand feet.
According to the US Geological Survey, there are 94 named peaks in the United States that stand above 14,000 feet in elevation. 13 of those are above 15,000 feet. That leaves 81 14ers. Well more than 60 of them are non-technical. While the Alaskan and Washington 14ers are glaciated and require ropes, almost all of the California and Colorado 14ers can be hiked or scrambled (depending on route and level of comfort) and do not require technical rope skills.
This is the second part of a series to help beginner mountaineers plan for and climb their first 14er or early 14ers. The series covers fitness, gear, planning/logistics, and acclimatization.

10:20 I've come to like emergency bivy bags, theyre very small, very light, affordable and functional.

Yeah, a lot of people swear by them, I just haven't made them a regular part of my trips. I've done it on climbs with a nasty approach where weight matters and a planned overnight, but rarely on a day hike. I'm probably kind of missing the point 😂They are called "emergency" for a reason 😉
