      Brandon Gaither
      his criticism about the NBA is that the NBA has separated from the sport of basketball. And that attraction to the NBA is a result of drama and personality rather than the sport itself.

      But the NFL has its side storylines too. OBJ and the net. OBJ and Norman feud. Antonio Brown. Cam Newton being Cam Newton. Kaepernick. The Ryan Brothers. The 49ers. Tomlin and his coaching staff. And the list goes on...

Are we forgetting that even way back in the day the Celtics won 11 times in 13 years, or that it was Celtics lakers a number of times in the Magic/bird days, or that the Bulls went 6 times in a row when Jordan played the full year. But whatever...

      Nathan Boyle let me ask you a question. I'm assuming you follow basketball to some degree. with Kevin Durant going back to OKC, what did you hear more about, OKC vs Golden State? Or Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant, and how will they react to each other? once again, no attention to the actual game, just the drama outside of the court. competition has taken a side seat to sideshow. It's ridiculous. All that's ever focused on is the player and not the team. Maybe that's the media's fault more than the players, I do agree there, but when the players (like LeBron, which I'm from Cleveland. my high school played against LeBron. I was a huge fan of his coming into the league) have become bigger than the team, and instead of teams vs teams, it's players vs players. what'd you hear last year in the finals. It wasn't Cleveland vs Golden State. It was LeBron vs Steph Curry and then LeBron vs Draymond Green. IN THE FINALS!!!! It's drama, it's flashy... it is entertainment, but it's cheap and the wrong kind.

      everyone knew it would be the Lakers vs Celtics...Lakers vs Pistons...Bulls vs every other team without Jordan...and in the old days it was just the Celtics for a damn decade...the NBA has never had parity like the NFL...a lot of that is due to the fact that one great player on a NBA team has a bigger impact than one great player on an NFL 53 man roster...LeBron single-handedly turned the Cavs from a lottery team to a contender...you need a lot more than one great player to turn the Browns' fortune around

    The NBA is in a poor state: tanking teams, overpaying marginal/nonproven players, excessive 3-pt shooting, flopping, overprotecting jump shooters when it comes to contesting their shot, allowing 1-and-done college players who are talented but very raw to get drafted with expectations to change a struggling franchise, having the Knicks and Lakers gobble up national TV games simply because of their markets, dumb sideline timeout interviews, media gossip, media bias toward players, players taking jabs at others on Twitter like little kids, etc.

    He's right about super teams diminishing the regular season, but the media deserves a lot of blame for covering off the court stories rather than the actual game. There are so many stars in this league that don't get any hype from the media whatsoever because all they are focused on is what so and so has to say about trump, lebron vs curry, kd vs westbrook, etc. the league would be more exciting if they hyped up players not named lebron, curry, or westbrook. I mean Andrew Wiggins is emerging into a superstar while no one is paying attention, yet all they ever say is how he's a disappointment because he's not lebron. Same goes for Lavine, Lillard, McCollum, kawhi, john wall, anthony davis, jimmy butler, gordon Hayward, etc.

    Whitlock needs to read a history book. The NBA has been this way for nearly 40 years now. David Stern's marking strategy when he took over in the 80's was to market players over teams. You can argue the only TEAMS people follow in real numbers are the Lakers, Celtics, and Knicks. After that its all about the star players.
    Whitlock just likes to hear himself complain.

  • @BRBallin1

  • @WheedMBoise
    @WheedMBoise 8 років тому

    Does he not realize almost 95% of the games don't have this kind of issue? Sure, teams like the Knicks and Bulls have some controversy but since they're not super teams what happens on the court actually matters. It matters more than whatever is going on behind the scenes or on the sidelines, that's for sure.
    This problem with blowout games being undermined by storylines is only really an issue for the Warriors and Cavs, which are only 2 out of the 30 teams. They account for roughly 6% of the regular season games combined. This isn't as big of an issue as it's being made out to be.

    I 100% agree what Jason is saying, if you look at the players in the past, for example Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, players in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, they were never whine about themselves, they all about the team overall first and foremost and never join friends on different teams to chase championships, even though Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler did that, they never join their friends to win. Look at the NBA right now is beyond sick especially the NBA on ABC/ESPN, once NBC didn't renew the contact that was the last straw because NBA on ABC/ESPN, top to bottom is garbage, its all about players chasing rings, college players not staying at least two or three years in college, soap opera, acting like divas and players acting soft, it makes me sick. Lets get National Beyonce Association trending because thats what the NBA is right now, its about Me, Myself and I.

    No player interactions make headlines in the nfl because the nfl sucks the soul and humanity out of the sport. The nba is a player-driven league unlike the nfl which is an owner and commissioner driven league. When the finals comes around we're talking about Kyrie splashing a 3 over curry to win the title, we're not talking about feuds, this dude seems to have conveniently forgotten that for the sake of his argument.

    MLB, NFL, and NHL ALL had teams NO ONE thought would make the playoffs, make a Championship game/series in the last year alone. When was the last time that happened in the NBA?
    MLB - Most had the Yankees 4th in the AL East, not in the American League Championship game losing in game 7.
    NHL - Ottawa Senators were predicted to finish 7th in the Atlantic with 74 Points, ONLY 3 teams were predicted worse. They made the Stanley Cup Finals.
    NFL - Jacksonville Jaguars. Nuff Said.

    Here is how you fix the NBA.
    1. Contract at least 6 teams, 8 would be the number I go for - This will increase the talent (real quick name all the great players Jordan played against, then name all the great players Lebron plays against, the lack of Talent in the NBA, especially top end talent, is hurting the sport). As well as increase the Value of the Regular season. Off the top of my head, I would dump, the Kings, Clippers, Magic, Pelicans, Bobcats, Wizards, Bucks, and Hawks.
    2. Have a Draft for the players who no longer have a team, You probably could not fill a full round, but the best teams are not the ones who need help.
    3. Fire EVERY Ref, the stink of Fixing games still lingers. They probably still fix games, just learned how not to get caught.
    IMO, this would restore a lot of fans and make many new ones. Unlike most sports, in the NBA before the season starts you can write off 20 teams. Hard to be a fan when only a few teams have ANY chance. And I am NOT TALKING Championship, I am talk just making it to the Conference Championship.

      Jordan Rosales I absolutely agree about the Spurs. I watched the whole show and he made valid points saying the NBA needs a Pat Riley to run a organization, he also mentioned the Miami Heat organization (mostly Pat Riley) when it comes to not catering to superstars, I appreciate what D-Wade did for the Miami Heat, but this is about the team first and thats exactly what Whitlock is saying today.

    The reason the NBA is about individuals and not about the teams, is simple, all the teams suck now. Probably like 4 or 5 good teams out of like 30 teams so what you gonna focus on.

    • @stephenticsay27
      @stephenticsay27 8 років тому

      I think that Whitlock's criticism is misguided. If it's true that sports media just report on intrigue and gossip rather than good basketball, that's because of their own decisions and incentives, but it is decidedly not because there's no good basketball out there. It's true that the Finals teams are more or less a foregone conclusion, and that the macro-level suspense is less for it, but there's a whole slew of great players that the media pay little if any attention to. Kawhi Leonard gets better every season; Anthony Davis is phenomenal; the 76ers are rough and waiting for Ben Simmons, but actually an interesting team. But the media-Whitlock included-are only into pseudo-sensational players like Westbrook. The point is that it was "a different league back then," I guess-whatever that means-but the problem that has Whitlock so cranky is not about the basketball era we're in. It's about him and his ilk peddling things that aren't basketball. And he's part of the problem.

    I don't get it. People LOVED showtime lakers when they had a big 4 and people will openly acknowledge that the warriors would lose to the lakers but then we turn around and complain about how good golden state is and how it's a cakewalk. It was a cakewalk for the Boston celtics and the lakers but no one complains about that. And nobody was whining about shaq and kobe going 15 and 1 in the playoffs. but all of a sudden the nba sucks right now. dawg give me a break with the BS
