Absolutely the right call getting SM on board - you guys rock. I have been waiting for you to upgrade to his SMX / SML engines now after this Brodix block with SM internals was a hit. But I reckon it comes down to reliability towards horsetorq's - you still need to get the power down to the ground. Thank you for posting, your content brings so much positivity towards a hard winter. My fellow retirees are benking around the flatscreen at the elderly's home whilst having a blast watching your content. We will never be to old not watching an American V8 screeming down the track. Well this almost turned into an engine that was not Giraffe Racing proof lol. Reality is that too many people think the LS is the answer to everything. Every time i hear someone say that an LS is fine for 2500 hp, I just shake my head. They are just not built for that and they will lift heads etc. This just goes to show that a properly built BBC with a properly developed tune and driveline, is still the combo to beat when it comes to OE style engine platforms.
@@loganduffy3780 Uh no, he really does not. His new SML goes to 3000 and that is part of what makes it vastly superior to an LS. You try and push an LS to 3500 hp, good luck with that. If a 540 BBC with conventional heads needs 55+ psi of boost to make that kind of power, what kind of power do you reckon a 427 with much smaller heads would need? See the issue with your suggestion?
Cleetus is the kind of guy to order an engine to make 1000hp, the builder builds it for 2000hp just to be safe and he still pushes it past it's limit :D One of the best torture testers out there. It's so impressive how almost everything looks brand new after all that abuse. I am sure he will eventually find the limit and order an SMX :P
shame it's not on purpose. It's becasue he and his team are not very good mechanically. He needs to get a proper full time tuner and at least 1 proper full on race mechanic. James a George are cool guys and i'm sure they can do wonders with a pickup but there is now far too much evidence to support that when it comes to high precision stuff they have no idea what they are doing.

In my opinion, Steve Morris is one of the best engine builders out there today. Mucho respect for him, there's a lot going on when it comes to building race engines, and let's face it, there's a shitload of pressure on his shoulders 24/7. I got nothing but respect for him. He stays in the game, and does it right. It's a lot to deal with, and when it comes to motors, Steve Morris is the man. I was talking to someone the other day about cletus, he lives right by me, he started out making videos, I remember this video where he took an air compressor and blew up a little keychain turbo. Now he's got his own racetrack, for Christ's sake! My oh my, have we came a long way since then....
Something else along those lines, and most likely what takes at least 50% of Steve's time is advice. Although I have never talked to the man personally, I have been driving dirt cars since I was old enough to strap on a helmet. I can't think of another person I call more than my engine builder. Given that he takes the time to explain things and make these videos, I would be willing to bet that, as mentioned, over half his day is spent sharing that knowledge over a telephone.
@@donalddarbonne779 Cleetus abused tf out of TS poor engines trying to run 6s and they had told him it wouldnt likely run it due to the weight but it was soo close they kept trying too, i think the fans and their constant criticism of TS on his vids finally created some static between them and Cleet till he made the video explaining it was him and the crews decision to push it well past its design that was the issue
Had a taller staffy here in UK about 10yr ago it even looked like Steves dog, it got hit in the head by an almost full 5ltr can of West Systems 105 epoxy that had fell about 30-35ft from a boat gunnel up on the stands. It spark'od the dog clean out for maybe 5 secs then it woke up shook it's head and sneezed then acted like nothing had happened, just came over and acted the way it usually did🤣 Was like that time Tyson Fury Vs Wilder he got layed out for a bit, woke up like he'd just had a lovely afternoon snooze. Hard as nails these type dogs, can tell by looking at them they are hard AF.
It just blows my mind that Mullet is quicker than a Top Fuel Dragster in my youth years of the late 1960’s. Not to mention it is street legal and has driven over 160 passes and 3,000 miles on the street. If I were younger and still not so busy practicing Internal Medicine, you can bet Steve Morris would be the engine builder of my race car. He is expert at his professional trade and seems to be a likable, honest man. The performance and reliability results of his builds speak volumes. 👍👍
Props to Cletus and crew to for keeping up on maintenance and good tunes, with out those elements even the most well built engines will splat themselves over the track very quickly.

Seriously though those pistons look like they have seen 2 passes max, Brand freaking new. And 57 psi boost in a 540 spinning 8500+ rpms. Those turbos are mean units keeping up like that

A testament to the component choices made by the Engine Builder. Nice one Steve. I have wondered why comp bearings were so soft compared to the oem units? Always thought there must have been something else to it other than just the embed ability. The soft bearings deforming rather than de-laminating under extreme load saving catastrophic failure. Would be curious to see how the old rods measured center to center wise?
I REALLY enjoy these kinds of videos! I spent a large part of my Career as a Mechanical Engineer doing Forensic Failure analysis. 16 plus years of sifting through broken parts to find the one that broke first! Being able to read wrench marks helps! Somebody swears they never tampered with the engine, and you KNOW they did! 😆

I've had a roller lifter come apart in a big block Chevy.... It was catastrophic, to say the least. I've also had two other friends lose their big blocks due to broken roller lifters. Same story.... it's always ugly. Like Steve said, if you ever find yourself adjusting the lash on the same rocker more than once or twice then STOP, it's broken! Having to adjust lash on the same rocker more than once or twice IS your warning that it's about to go bad. Great video. Steve.... and great job on building an engine that is successfully being used harder than you designed it for.
Definitely one hell of a torture test for one of your engines. Speaks volumes of your product you put your name on !!!! Awesome work keep it up and don't ever falter.
Kevin (KSR Performance) designed and built that car to many things very well and he made it work. Can't say enough good about the build quality on Mullet, now it has a real engine to make it FAST

Totally agree with your assessment of the bearings. They look great considering the duty cycle of the engine. I would call the appearance of the bearings as spalling. Amazing the amount of load and RPM the engine put through the oil film to the bearings. Obviously no indication of metal to metal contact on the journals and bearings. Perfect example of how much load is pounded thru the oil film to cause the spalling condition of the bearings. Very impressive!!!!
As soon as i saw the bearing i thought "Spalling" I work on big diesel engines, that engine can fit in the cylinder big, and we see that a lot with them

I went to technical school in 2004 for auto repair technology, dreaming to have a job like yours someday. It turned into lots of timing chains and airbag wiring harness repairs for gm over 15yrs. I am now self employed in a different field, but I would love to build motors all day. Especially when they are already out of the car, in a crate!
3k+ miles in 3 D&D's (won all three of them, at least 1 6 every event) FL2k (won mid 6's consistent) and World cup (Won and dominated) Then a christmas tree race (6 70's time with a christmas tree on it and pushing past what you said it'd be capable of, roughly 2500 (by the 6.47 it's nearing 3k HP). This engine is a testament to the quality of your engine building

Had the pleasure of having my eardrums almost blasted out by this beast in the pits on Raceweek. By far the coolest automotive event I've ever been to. Then this engine continued to just absolutely blow everyone away with how fast it got. 🏁
@24:35 - Piston ring free gap: for a great example of what Steve is talking about with what can happen to the free gap, see Finnegan's Drag Week videos(on his YT channel), LOL. He ended up not having enough fuel pump, burned it up at the top end, but ONLY enough to knock the tension out of the rings and collapse the ring land on only 1 of the pistons! Lucky, could've been so much more expensive! Great content as always, Steve & Co! Really appreciate you guys putting this stuff out, when engine building has such a history of secrecy it's awesome to see information sharing. Besides, if I'm going to afford an SM engine at some point, then I need to build a better engine right now to hustle more suckers LOL.
If I were Steve and Cleetus I would be estatic on how good the engine out of Mullet looks after that many street miles and passes down the track especially as hard as he has been leaning on it. 57 pounds of boost on a cast block BBC is alot of boost and definitely more than should be run on it on any sort of regular basis. If Cleetus wants to keep pushing Mullet this hard he would be wise to upgrade to at least a billet block and a dry sump system or better yet dig into "Little Ripper's" college fund and have Steve build him one of his SMX engines that way he can run all the boost an not be in danger of splitting the block or lifting a head

The rings and bearings certainly won't hurt but with the number of laps of that engine has on it the rods, maybe the pistons, lifters (or refurbished) and most likey springs have to be changed. That said this engine looks really good for the number of laps the engine has on it and as hard as Cleetus has been leaning on it
Outstanding looking engine and all related components after Garret leaned on this one it just goes to show the QUALITY OF YOUR CRAFTSMEN, BUILDING AND THE ENGINEER WHO THOUGHT ALL OF THIS BBC architecture! Mr. Steve Morris the way you treat all of your customers like friends and follow through with checking these out and replacing what needs replaced to freshen them up there is no doubt that by the end of 2023 we could see Tom Bailey and ol Cletus going neck for neck into the very low 6’s and maybe into the 5.90’s they both have capable cars well Tom already is there but would be great to see Cletus with a Personal Best! Steve is for the deeper pocket individual who is practically not toping it of. Tx speed is for the average buck super. Reliable for the price . Nonetheless I love Steve's mini classroom sessions

Not sure Garrett has anything that would really warrant an SMX. Mullet is a small tire car all things considered, and the SMX does need more maintenance after all. For him to put an SMX in Mullet would be a 150 grand ordeal. He is now swapping from alu rods to steel rods in this to make maintenance easier and more focused on longevity. He also runs Mullet in classes for radial tires, so he can't even swap to a bias ply setup for more power handling. At 6.40 Mullet is getting pretty close to the limits of what it can do without some serious modifications.

Been following Cleetus for well over a year now. Brought me here. I started building engines for my Dads 4WD race truck in my teens. Then on to drags cars up to Super Pro open cars before I ran out of money. (AKA marriage, kids) Went to trade school right out of HS to be a Toolmaker and have now been a Toolmaker/CNC programmer for over 35 years. I can see that you're detail oriented by your shop. (even mop buckets lined up) I would come work for you any day. People, do what you love. Your passion. And you'll never work a day in your life. (Steve, you hiring?)😃

But that's not been an oiling issue that lifter. There's nothing in this first part of the disassembly to indicate oil has not done its job. Maybe we might see some issues from the final disassembly but I doubt it tbh considering how debris free that pan was. Bare in mind btw that Cleetus bent that pan in when he thought mullet was a motorbike and popped a wheelie. If that's still that same bent in pan that just about had the clearance the pump pick up needed then the proof is in the pudding that you don't really need to go dry on this level of build. Is it the better option of the two 🤔 Absolutely not!.. but if it does it's job then I see it as a moot point especially if he's going to move onto a full billet build.
keep in mind cletuus has mentioned that he sees oil pressure go down on the top end, even if it hasn't been really bad for it, it certainly not optimal.
@@bigduphusaj162 The fact that his logs show him losing oil pressure on the big end because the pickup is starved of oil with the forces on the car say otherwise. Anything pulling this sort of Gforce and MPH should be dry sump, baffles can not keep the pickup in the oil at that level. When you're at 9k rpm and 220mph that's not the time to have less than 15psi of pressure like he's been getting.
I can only imagine what the facial expression would be on GM engineer's face when they're told that their big block would make 3000 hp and 58 psi of boost.
I've been watching Garrett since his whistle tips and fidget spinner days. I love how he's built his brand and respect how far he's come, but sometimes that boy can break a ball bearing in a rubber room. You guys build a solid motor!

Had a taller staffy here in UK about 10yr ago it even looked like Steves dog, it got hit in the head by an almost full 5ltr can of West Systems 105 epoxy that had fell about 30-35ft from a boat gunnel up on the stands. It spark'od the dog clean out for maybe 5 secs then it woke up shook it's head and sneezed then acted like nothing had happened, just came over and acted the way it usually did🤣 Was like that time Tyson Fury Vs Wilder he got layed out for a bit, woke up like he'd just had a lovely afternoon snooze. Hard as nails these type dogs, can tell by looking at them they are hard AF.

Diamond Pistons do make a very good hard anodized coating.
It just blows my mind that Mullet is quicker than a Top Fuel Dragster in my youth years of the late 1960’s. Not to mention it is street legal and has driven over 160 passes and 3,000 miles on the street. If I were younger and still not so busy practicing Internal Medicine, you can bet Steve Morris would be the engine builder of my race car. He is expert at his professional trade and seems to be a likable, honest man. The performance and reliability results of his builds speak volumes. 👍👍

Props to Cletus and crew to for keeping up on maintenance and good tunes, with out those elements even the most well built engines will splat themselves over the track very quickly.
@@solatyn yeah what's the deal with that? That's been up for sale forever now. TBH it's cool and all that but you'd just get bored of it after a day and want a proper 4x4 tool so nobody phoned the sweeney on you when they seen it tearing about. Would draw too much attention that thing.

Seriously though those pistons look like they have seen 2 passes max, Brand freaking new. And 57 psi boost in a 540 spinning 8500+ rpms. Those turbos are mean units keeping up like that

Amazing to see everything look so good considering how hard Cleetus pushed this thing. By the calculators he easily was in 3000+HP range at World Cup.
Thus so cool to watch. I watched Ole cleeter for a long time now and to see his engine from mullet tor apart is awesome. Always heard about your engines and how great they are. Never knew you had a UA-cam till today.

I have wondered why comp bearings were so soft compared to the oem units? Always thought there must have been something else to it other than just the embed ability. The soft bearings deforming rather than de-laminating under extreme load saving catastrophic failure. Would be curious to see how the old rods measured center to center wise?
I REALLY enjoy these kinds of videos! I spent a large part of my Career as a Mechanical Engineer doing Forensic Failure analysis. 16 plus years of sifting through broken parts to find the one that broke first! Being able to read wrench marks helps! Somebody swears they never tampered with the engine, and you KNOW they did! 😆

I've had a roller lifter come apart in a big block Chevy.... It was catastrophic, to say the least. I've also had two other friends lose their big blocks due to broken roller lifters. Same story.... it's always ugly. Like Steve said, if you ever find yourself adjusting the lash on the same rocker more than once or twice then STOP, it's broken! Having to adjust lash on the same rocker more than once or twice IS your warning that it's about to go bad. Great video. Steve.... and great job on building an engine that is successfully being used harder than you designed it for.
Definitely one hell of a torture test for one of your engines. Speaks volumes of your product you put your name on !!!! Awesome work keep it up and don't ever falter.
Kevin (KSR Performance) designed and built that car to many things very well and he made it work. Can't say enough good about the build quality on Mullet, now it has a real engine to make it FAST

IIRC the cars chassis was originally build by Pro Fab. Kevin definitely fixed it up right though.
Pro Fab built the car. KSR did the final setup work.

Totally agree with your assessment of the bearings. They look great considering the duty cycle of the engine. I would call the appearance of the bearings as spalling. Amazing the amount of load and RPM the engine put through the oil film to the bearings. Obviously no indication of metal to metal contact on the journals and bearings. Perfect example of how much load is pounded thru the oil film to cause the spalling condition of the bearings. Very impressive!!!!
As soon as i saw the bearing i thought "Spalling" I work on big diesel engines, that engine can fit in the cylinder big, and we see that a lot with them

I went to technical school in 2004 for auto repair technology, dreaming to have a job like yours someday. It turned into lots of timing chains and airbag wiring harness repairs for gm over 15yrs. I am now self employed in a different field, but I would love to build motors all day. Especially when they are already out of the car, in a crate!
3k+ miles in 3 D&D's (won all three of them, at least 1 6 every event) FL2k (won mid 6's consistent) and World cup (Won and dominated) Then a christmas tree race (6 70's time with a christmas tree on it and pushing past what you said it'd be capable of, roughly 2500 (by the 6.47 it's nearing 3k HP). This engine is a testament to the quality of your engine building

Fitting that they stuck the 4th bolt on the box lid in from the side LOL. I feel like watching Cletus and crew is like college football. Sometimes the plays are spectacular, and sometimes you just scratch your head, the unpredictability is part of the excitement!

Had the pleasure of having my eardrums almost blasted out by this beast in the pits on Raceweek. By far the coolest automotive event I've ever been to. Then this engine continued to just absolutely blow everyone away with how fast it got. 🏁
@24:35 - Piston ring free gap: for a great example of what Steve is talking about with what can happen to the free gap, see Finnegan's Drag Week videos(on his YT channel), LOL. He ended up not having enough fuel pump, burned it up at the top end, but ONLY enough to knock the tension out of the rings and collapse the ring land on only 1 of the pistons! Lucky, could've been so much more expensive!
Great content as always, Steve & Co! Really appreciate you guys putting this stuff out, when engine building has such a history of secrecy it's awesome to see information sharing. Besides, if I'm going to afford an SM engine at some point, then I need to build a better engine right now to hustle more suckers LOL.

If I were Steve and Cleetus I would be estatic on how good the engine out of Mullet looks after that many street miles and passes down the track especially as hard as he has been leaning on it. 57 pounds of boost on a cast block BBC is alot of boost and definitely more than should be run on it on any sort of regular basis. If Cleetus wants to keep pushing Mullet this hard he would be wise to upgrade to at least a billet block and a dry sump system or better yet dig into "Little Ripper's" college fund and have Steve build him one of his SMX engines that way he can run all the boost an not be in danger of splitting the block or lifting a head

Been wondering how everything looks after all of his abuse lol you built it so all it probably needs is a set of rings and bearings lol
The rings and bearings certainly won't hurt but with the number of laps of that engine has on it the rods, maybe the pistons, lifters (or refurbished) and most likey springs have to be changed. That said this engine looks really good for the number of laps the engine has on it and as hard as Cleetus has been leaning on it
Outstanding looking engine and all related components after Garret leaned on this one it just goes to show the QUALITY OF YOUR CRAFTSMEN, BUILDING AND THE ENGINEER WHO THOUGHT ALL OF THIS BBC architecture! Mr. Steve Morris the way you treat all of your customers like friends and follow through with checking these out and replacing what needs replaced to freshen them up there is no doubt that by the end of 2023 we could see Tom Bailey and ol Cletus going neck for neck into the very low 6’s and maybe into the 5.90’s they both have capable cars well Tom already is there but would be great to see Cletus with a Personal Best! Thank you sir for the wonderfully engineered engine packages and the over the top support you give them! And so transparent with regular joes like me! Love your channel and all you do so very interesting!

Remember Leroy had tons of Dyno runs many events and ran with no cooling when it finally gave way. They are both great engine builders in their own right. Steve is for the deeper pocket individual who is practically not toping it of. Tx speed is for the average buck super. Reliable for the price . Nonetheless I love Steve's mini classroom sessions

Not sure Garrett has anything that would really warrant an SMX. Mullet is a small tire car all things considered, and the SMX does need more maintenance after all.
For him to put an SMX in Mullet would be a 150 grand ordeal. He is now swapping from alu rods to steel rods in this to make maintenance easier and more focused on longevity. He also runs Mullet in classes for radial tires, so he can't even swap to a bias ply setup for more power handling. At 6.40 Mullet is getting pretty close to the limits of what it can do without some serious modifications.

After all of the issues Cleeter has had with the LS setup in this hefty boi, really stoked to see his success with your setup! And virtually zero issues, apart from the fuel pump mandrel (and making boost up here in the Rocky Mountains!) Looking forward to more of the partnership between you two.
I think that Pete from Real Good at Doin Stuff and Dr Blowemall were helping to push the limits of this fine BBC. Goes without saying, we all knew this engine was going to get leaned on.

Been following Cleetus for well over a year now. Brought me here. I started building engines for my Dads 4WD race truck in my teens. Then on to drags cars up to Super Pro open cars before I ran out of money. (AKA marriage, kids) Went to trade school right out of HS to be a Toolmaker and have now been a Toolmaker/CNC programmer for over 35 years. I can see that you're detail oriented by your shop. (even mop buckets lined up) I would come work for you any day. People, do what you love. Your passion. And you'll never work a day in your life. (Steve, you hiring?)😃

You done an excellent job of building this engine. I wouldn't have expected it to look this good.
He really needs to drysump it with the speeds and Gforces he's getting now, hopefully that's on the to-do list at some point.

But that's not been an oiling issue that lifter. There's nothing in this first part of the disassembly to indicate oil has not done its job. Maybe we might see some issues from the final disassembly but I doubt it tbh considering how debris free that pan was. Bare in mind btw that Cleetus bent that pan in when he thought mullet was a motorbike and popped a wheelie. If that's still that same bent in pan that just about had the clearance the pump pick up needed then the proof is in the pudding that you don't really need to go dry on this level of build. Is it the better option of the two 🤔 Absolutely not!.. but if it does it's job then I see it as a moot point especially if he's going to move onto a full billet build.
keep in mind cletuus has mentioned that he sees oil pressure go down on the top end, even if it hasn't been really bad for it, it certainly not optimal.
@@Alwx1 Dry sump is used on road racing motors all the time.
@@bigduphusaj162 The fact that his logs show him losing oil pressure on the big end because the pickup is starved of oil with the forces on the car say otherwise. Anything pulling this sort of Gforce and MPH should be dry sump, baffles can not keep the pickup in the oil at that level. When you're at 9k rpm and 220mph that's not the time to have less than 15psi of pressure like he's been getting.
