- My rig on my most recent trip was a Sage R8 Salt 11 Weight paired up with an 11 weight RIO Clear Tip Floating Line. Love the combo, but it does require some muscle on the shorter casts.

That is pretty specific advice.!not bs “hey this is great “ appreciate it Joe
You bet, glad to help. Thanks Matt!
@@redsflyshop sounds like fishing was tough. I hope to get down there for the baby tarpon etc.
Great video Joe. You are spot on
Ken we will get them next time! Doc Watt has landed (2) so far and hooked (4) that I know of. He's killing it down there!
After a half dozen Keys/Bahamas trips, on my guides recommendation, I dumped my 11 wt for a 10 with an 11 line on it. If you’re out there all day, it can make a difference and unless you are going for true beasts, IMO a 10 can get you by for just about everything. Tibor Riptide FTW as well.
Not a bad idea, some of those "point blank" shots at 30' are tough with a fast rod that is light on line load.
Great review! Thanks for putting in that work. Not a lot of review for 11 weight rods. Would love to see an 11 wt comparison
Thank you! Just took this exact rig to Christmas Island and got a couple of GT's on it. Really like the "castability" of this rod. I think its a bit light for GT's and Baja work, but for delicately placing a Tarpon fly it is outstanding.
Do you think the NRX+s in #11 is a better option than the R8 or are they comparable
Great vid as always
❤❤❤😊😊
Thanks Joe. That Tibor Riptide looks like a good match for the rod. I’m considering that reel myself, but it would need to do double duty as a Spey reel to justify that cost. Do you think it could accommodate a 420 grain integrated skagit line?
.. it would go on a 10 wt TFO rod in the salt, as well as my Burkheimer 6128.
@@steveg8443 Yes 420 Integrated, no problem. They are a fine spey reel. Just make sure to have it wrapped with 65# backing so that you are ready for anything!
What are those spikes along the bow of the boat? Are they there to prevent your line from tangling, similar to those found on a stripping basket?
Yes exactly, those contain the line but still allow you to shoot it. Very handy!
Hi there,
Could you please recommend an intermediate fly line for the R8 salt 11 weight?
Cheers
John
Do you think the NRX+s in #11 is a better option than the R8 or are they comparable
Great vid as always
Comparable yes on raw performance, the NRX+ is an "all in" rod when you cast it. Not much feathering the throttle on that one. The R8 I think has a bit more leeway on casting style. If you are a super strong caster the NRX+ would be a great choice. If casting heavy rods is more challenging for you, the R8 with a line bump is a friendlier weapon and will likely make the short quick casts "close quarter combat" casts more effectively. We sell both models, really like them both. I used an NRX+ on my last trip to the Keys before this one. I would say go with the brand that has earned your trust in the past! Hope this is at least a little helpful!
Awesome that’s really helpful
