Graded motor imagery (GMI): imagined movements
We love using graded motor imagery as part of motor control training for many neurologic disorders. Mental imagery or imagined movements is one of the key components and we know that it fires up the brain for neuroplastic changes.
This weekend, in the FND course that I got to teach with the great MGH group, I shared about the steps of GMI that are so helpful in FND (and can be a big part of our motor control piece of the pie!), so I wanted to share an example.
In this video, @chelzdunc was sharing how she used an American Sign Language instruction video to guide imagined movements for hand function. She had used this in someone with focal hand dystonia (who had a great recovery through their program!) but you could see how powerful this would be for anyone with impaired hand function-from FND to stroke to PD to even an orthopedic hand injury.
We have found that imagined movements, as part of a GMI, have been an essential part of rebuilding normal movement pathways.
I would love to hear from you, what apps, videos, activities, etc, are you using for mental imagery or imagined movements? Comment below. 👇🏽
