I recently picked up the Blu-ray box set of all the Legacy Collections that I'm excited to dig more into here. And on Saturday I went to the screening of The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man at a theater. That was a lot of fun to see them on the big screen! I didn't go see Dracula and Frankenstein a few weeks ago when they showed those.
14:12 I had a Millennial buddy at work who claimed he had seen Ridley Scott's 'Alien', but he had only seen it on his phone and I told him, "NO, NO, NO, you haven't seen the movie at all. How could you possibly be scared or amazed watching the movie on your phone? Give me a break." Luckily, he joined me with a bunch of other work friends and we saw 'Alien' properly three years ago on an IMAX size screen during a limited run and he finally appreciated how well that movie was made. Watching movies on phones is a cardinal sin because phones are pathetic and cannot compete with a large screen TV at the very least or on a large theatre screen at best. :)
Wow! Visiting the K-mart camera department for the 8mm films; a most exciting time in my childhood! I used "the bedsheet", too, for awhile, but never got the screen. I made my own with giant sheets of matte white poster board and velvet lining.
I have these movies on Blu ray (well the son bought them and I just bought this box set ( Vol1 ) after watching some reviews and also because it contains the Spanish version of Dracula of which I have never seen
I picked the 4ks of this first wave up in the steelbook versions. Not generally a steelbook guy but these Universal Monsters steelbooks were too nice to ignore. Watched Frankenstein today with my 15 year old son who loved it (of course, why wouldn't he? It's a classic for a reason!). Have to say I thought the previous Blu ray looked amazing but this 4k of Frankenstein looked incredible! The blacks and the contrasts between shadow and light are stunning. The HDR is beautifully done and really suits this sort of film. Can't wait to check out Dracula, The Wolf Man and The Invisible Man and really look forward to seeing The Mummy, Creature From the Black Lagoon and all the rest come onto the 4k format. Hopefully they continue the steelbook option because I think with these they will be my last format and so will be nice to get them in something memorable to put on the shelf next to my Universal Monsters Blu ray box and the Universal Horror collections. Just amazing to have gems like this preserved and presented in such a stunning format!
It's been a nice discovery in what HDR can do for black and white films, especially movies this old. I think the general thinking is that HDR is nice for colorful movies, but doesn't have much to offer here. Glad to find out the truth proves otherwise! Also, kudos to you for showing your son Frankenstein and him loving it. Bree was showing me an article from a middle school paper where an 8th grader talks about "classic Halloween movies" from yesteryear, and they've named Ghostbusters, Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice, and The Addams Family, you know, all the golden oldies. So glad to see you teaching the next generation why these movies from almost 100 years ago are still great today. We need to pass these on!
@@CerealAtMidnight absolutely agree. No point having these on physical media if no one knows about them or watches them once our generation is gone. I think it's very important that kids can see the and appreciate such important works and can distinguish the genius behind the pioneering and golden eras of cinema and the tricks and techniques they used pre digital age to achieve their magic and charm and timelessness. Also in my opinion there is not much coming out these days we'll be talking about in 50 to 100 years time 😜. I try and watch classic films with my son on a regular basis, not just stuff from the 30s but more recent stuff such as what I grew up with... Planet of the Apes or even more recent stuff like the 80s classics I grew up with... Arnie films, Gremlins, The Goonies etc. But I'll continue to explore stuff with him going right back. It's clear that his generation are more motivated and into their video games but I'm trying to make sure he also explores and appreciates other creative medium. Getting him to read and appreciate books is more challenging lol. Unlike myself who grew up reading prolifically (bit more challenging these days due to time constraints). As for HDR and black and white I'd argue it's probably more effective on black and white then colour in some ways. The B&W 4k stuff I've seen like it's a Wonderful Life, The Elephant Man, Mr Smith Goes to Washington etc all look incredible. I've turned off the HDR to see what they look like and although they still look good the HDR just adds so much more. Great to see so many more B&W films getting the treatment. Let's get some 4k classic noir happening!
11:00 I love those Castle Films Super 8mm and regular 8mm movies either with or without sound and Ken Films which offered colour sound films too. I have over 100 of those film digests and they are so much fun with gorgeous box art. :)
I recently picked up this 4k Universal Monsters Collection and it appears that the British edition is different from the American one. It has the same films on 4 x 4k discs (including the Spanish version of "Dracula"), but no blu ray copies. Also the set is in one plastic case with a slip cover, not the book form you had on the show. As for the 4k transfers. I think the differences are minimal, but I can see more contrast between the light and dark shades. Plus you can definitely see the grain, which is something I want to see in these movies that were originally on film !
I have been watching the Universal movies this week on blu ray. I was wondering how the 4k transfers look. Thanks for the honest opinions. I must agree some of the youtube channels are clueless. I have noticed so many of them buy blu rays just to add to a collection. I call it the Pokemon mentality. Got to get them all but a lack of love or passion for the films and I think that is sad. Happy Halloween to all of the Cereal at Midnight Community !!! Do you have a favorite Universal Monster?
Thanks, Larry! Yep, a lot of people on UA-cam are buying movies like people used to buy baseball cards, solely as a collectible, not as something to watch, enjoy, and share. We're doing our best to bring lots of substance, passion, and our joy of movies to everything we do. My favorite Universal Monster is probably Frankenstein, but every time I watch The Invisible Man again, I love that guy more and more. Just absolutely bonkers, and delightfully chaotic.
Hey guys, I also have never really seen much of a need for 4k on older films, the ultimate seems to be 4k scan and 2k restoration and then standard 2k bluray and after that I don't seem to justify quadruple dipping not 11 dipping like JB ! Especially if they don't have proper elements, ps as a thought, I have always wanted a 5min extra on every bluray talking with the restoration crew about how the film was restored? What elements ect
Great discussion and insight with a fun POV! I practice 4K moderation (so far) but I may have to pick this set up. And you're right, we do vote with our wallets on whether these things get put out.
I would say yes, these are the new reference versions, but the Blu-rays are VERY good. The upgrade here is not as easily apparent as it is on some Blu-ray to 4K comparisons.
Yes, these monster movies are great but we need to come to the awareness that one studio made these possible: Universal Studios. Where would we be if Universal didn't make "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" when they did?
Yeah I bought these and I did not expect a big picture upgrade the only reason I did was I caught them for 40 rather than the 60ish the normally go for, def overpriced especially as its a double /triple/quadruple dip for the fans.
I don't know if it's just me but I find a lot of the older films have more re-watch value in them compared to these so called new blockbusters My son only bought the universal monster Blu Rays about 18 months ago and I have watched them 3 times each already compared to some movies I bought 10 years ago which I have watched maybe twice
Speaking of people who don't want to wTCH OLD movies, one of my pet peeves is the people who refuse to watch Black and White movies. It's right up there with people who watch in the wrong aspect ratio :)
@@darlenegoodwin I bought it fairly cheaply on eBay several years ago. I don't think I paid more than $15 to $20 for it. I still need to display it properly in a nice rectangular frame in my makeshift home theatre/media room. :)

Great conversation...We need more 4K from the 1930s..
Oh my God!!! I was at Chiller Theater this past weekend and there was a magic show with a sign to win a dead body!!
That's amazing!

These discussion videos are wonderful! Happy Halloween Heath!
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is now the oldest movie on 4K!
As I always say, black and white IS the color of cinema.

This was a fantastic conversation, Heath & JB.
I agree with John, the people that make a big deal about having to watch an old film suck. Lol Universal Monsters rule!
Wait, aren’t you supposed to mess with the settings of modern TVs? Doesn’t that fix the colours and the motion smoothing?
The medium of Black and White film is entirely based on the effect of contrast so I would of thought these woukd be the reference versions?
I would say yes, these are the new reference versions, but the Blu-rays are VERY good. The upgrade here is not as easily apparent as it is on some Blu-ray to 4K comparisons.

Anyone who refuses to watch a film just because it’s in black and white has poor taste and is not to be trusted and is probably a robot.
Maxell cassettes.
Yes, I even have an original rolled and still-sealed poster of that famous Maxell ad. :)

Yes, the Blu Ray collection has better packaging.
