I was attending Roosevelt High School in 1979 in Boyle Heights. The school would have lunch hour Dj's and live bands. The Plugz played lunch time in the winter of 79. Was the best live gig I saw at the time. The whole lunch crowed went crazy and a food fight started when the band was finishing their set. One of the bands roadies started throwing their debut album into the crowd of students. I was lucky to catch one, and till this day I still have the record in my collection.
In 1999 I had the pleasure of playing on a record with Charlie (RIP) I played bass, and I was totally ignorant of this band. At the time he had already played with Soul Asylum, Cracker and Joan Osborne, I don't think he had started playing in Social Distortion yet? The album we played on was a Japanese pop star's record, she went by the name Hal (still at it I believe) and she was young, turned 20 during the session. Gary Thorstensen from Tad played guitar, we were assembled as a band by Steve Fisk, who produced it, and we recorded in Seattle in Pearl Jam's studio, a weird alignment of things at the same moment. The record was poppy, along the lines of Mary Lou Lord. Charlie blew my mind, the best drummer I have worked with. He lived in Canada at the time and when we finished and he went home, he got turned back at the border and ended up back at the studio. I had some great conversations with him. Was so bummed to hear he had passed. So glad to catch up and listen to this important band, they were amazing. Thanks for posting this!
Saw them LIVE Austin Texas - truly one of the most compelling bands to zap my cerebral cortex! Years later I saw them again on Quinten Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn | 'The Art of Seduction' !
They were a fun band live and they played a lot. I bought this album and The Gears rocking at ground zero on the same day. It was a hell of a time to come of age.
Yep, a lot of that Phoenix crowd made their names in LA when they moved out here around 1978. David Wiley with the Human Hands, Paul Cutler with BPeople, Jimmy Don Bolles with the Germs, both Paul and Jimmy Don in 45 Grave.
Its 2024 and I got here after listening to The Real Kids All kinda girls.Which I only got too after a DJ played it at a Kelly Stoltz gig.Better late than never!!
Literally found them about an hour ago , I'm grateful af but being 21 and hearing shit like this has me wishing I was in my teens in the 70s , bands like The Saints , Creepersin , Bad Brains , Dead Boys , Fear , Buzzcocks etc do that for me
I saw them playing with The Gears and The Human Hands. I think it was at The Starwood. They had just come back from a tour of Texas and were playing songs from their not yet released second album as well as songs from this album. I think it must have been the summer of 1980.
Without question one of the best punk rock records out of The first wave of Los Angeles punk.Oddly not as well known as some of it's contemporary "rivals" it's as good if not better than anyone else's.
that is patently wrong. the best punk band was Orange Squirts. The cops raided their shows before they got to play a single song, and they all died of overdoses before they could record anything
Tito's best work for sure. Better Luck was also good though they were moving in a more radio friendly direction. Saw them play a bunch in LA back in the day. Unfortunately lost all my Vinyl LP's in a storage mishap back in the 90's but I do have this on CD.
I found these guys on the REPO MAN soundtrack. I find out later that its basically a completely different band. I do like the two songs on the soundtrack, but yeah, this is a different vibe altogether.
It is actually the same band. Check out their second album (which I do like a bit more); it sounds a little closer to the songs on the RM soundtrack (not to mention the one that's actually on there): ua-cam.com/video/EuhWvmTco74/v-deo.html
Love Sweetheart like You.The video shows Charlie & was thrilling for me.I played with CQ before Tito tapped him to go to LA and make punk history.RIP my carnalito.Tito also a friend is doing great.Got to see him at Charlies funeral.
When will this album get its just due??? Is it because they did a soundtrack for a hardcore porn film? ("Electrify Me" was one of the tunes). Back when punk and porn rubbed shoulders in the city of angels...
@@SilasFiction - New Wave Hookers. Infamous for the film being recalled once it was revealed that Traci Lords was under 18. All future releases of the film removed Traci Lords scenes entirely.
@@frillwhistlebell Yes, they both came out on CD. I was lucky enough to find them both in a mall record store cut-out bin for like $5 each, sometime in probably 1989 or so. I still thank my lucky stars I had the good sense to grab them then-I've never seen them anywhere else again (except online for crazy $$).

Seriously underrated band and album. Remember a great show with them at the Hong Kong Cafe on the same bill with X and the Human Hands.
Wow, the Human Hands, glad to hear that name again. Unique sound, horns, cool songs.
I was there - my ex helped pay for and produce this album-
fucking Wow....
They remind me of the later band Popdefect
Wow,i remember that show!
Saw them in 1977 at a garage practice in Boyle Heights
Killer OLD SCHOOL PUNK from the 70's! KICK-ASS!👏😉🍻
Thank you. One of the greatest punk bands ever. Actually one of the greatest bands ever. Don't want limit the greatness

Great album. I heard them in 84 missed the boat in nyc. Didn't like the second lp
Saw them many times all over LA. One of my favorite bands in those dayz.
They were a fun band live and they played a lot.
I bought this album and The Gears rocking at ground zero on the same day. It was a hell of a time to come of age.
did you see the gun club?
When this came out it's the only thing I listened to for like 2 months.....
The fact that this record is here with such good quality means instant sub.
Tied with The Consumers All My Friends are Dead for greatest punk album of all time

R.I.P. Charlie Quintana
I KNOW
How did I not know about The Plugz until 2023?
Let me tell you about a plate of shrimp....
You're just going about your business, and all of a sudden you hear someone say the word "plate" or "shrimp" or "Plate of Shrimp"....

HOW!?
RIP Charlie, one of the greats!
A real player
@@andrewburgess633 This record has amazing drumming
Too right! Many LA bands had the privilege of playing with that Madman. I have an enormous amount of respect for his style.
Don't think other states or countries understand about LA in the 1980's - THE PUNK SCENE-
my youth life was spent in the mountains of Colorado, watching Repo Man, finding any and all punk cool stuff I could, dreaming of living in LA....
They most certainly do. Just has to be the right type of person. Plenty of people in California/LA couldn't give less of a shit about it too.
Forgot about this one!!! What an amazing record!
Damn, the bands we forgot about back then were far better than 99.9% of the cr@p nowadays. We didn't know how good we had it back then.
Sold out of the home of my ex -
They made Bob Dylan look good on Letterman.
1979 all the way!

Skank rhythm, dynamics, scales, arrangements, etc. on a punk album! Nice to hear musical intelligence in a punk setting.
Their best album
If D. Boon were on vocals it would sound exactly like The Minutemen.
Got here after reading that this is one of Kevin Seconds favourite albums. What a gem. I can see where Rancid got their sound from
Clash too w rancid
Love. This. LP!!! 🔥
Hell yeah!!! Just wanna get up and dance....
I'm surprised there is no cover version of "Electrify me" by another group or singer..this is really a great reggae tune !
Totally

Love this band rock on brothers
Bad ass f...n album!!!
I remember hearing this song when I was about 14 after we stole our friend’s dad’s porn called New Wave Hookers 😂😂😂
I was hoping someone would mention this, great soundtrack.
very cool my first listen at 57.not sure but doesn't the plugz have a song on repoman
! Sounds like a great Band playing live -- i know there are "greater" Punk Records but They sound too Studio; this is my Fav.
Flipping Amazing!
God and music matter otherwise we are nothing.
I fing God in music all the time, morricone for instance, and other great italians..
They showed a lot of heart writing a song mourning Jonestown, when a lot of people were making sick jokes about it.
Best punk band ever, FACT!
They’re not bad
But your claim is seriously far fetched

Pure
Saw them at the Masque 😮
None of their music is available on Spotify -- ACK!! Copyright BS I assume?
I know they retired The Plugz name and became Cruzados.
They became Tito & Tarantula - as seen on From Dusk until Dawn!
No joke

They have a very English sound to them for some reason.
That's true....
They sound like a cross between the Sex Pistols and the Specials
Listen closer...this is a very Los Angeles album
Using British guitar amps by the sound of it
That's what they were listening to at the time......Its called "Under the Influence".

Bamba bamba!
It’s a crime that they’re unavailable on Apple Music. Are they on any other streaming services?
