It brilliantly establishes that the kid is on track to be just as screwed up and problematic as Barry because well, both Barry and Sally seem to be terrible parents and seem to have the kid out of obligation, not of love (that last shot clearly shows how loveless that marriage has gotten). I don´t know if i`m overanalyzing here or if anyone else has pointed it out. But the shot of the refrigerator is an absolutely genius metaphore. We have the wine bottles that Sally drinks in one side, beer cans for Barry on the other, and the partially eaten donut for the child probably. Them living in a house that big could be a fantasy, but it is pretty clear that the family itself is struggling with their own personal demons and are living miserably due to the choices Barry and Sally made. Not to mention that the fridge looks almost empty save for those three foods to begin with. And the first thing that John picks up as he opens the fridge is the beer can implying the possible influence of his father when it comes to his emotional issues and shut-in nature.

My takeaway from this is Sally became a wine mom who squandered all her potential and Barry became a repressed father trying to drink away his past. The donut is there to represent the kid and the idyllic innocence that they thought they could escape into, but when the kid took the beer it hinted that he inherited his father's true nature, this is further foreshadowed by his violent tendency upon being teased by the other kid.

I think part of what sells this as a time jump and not a daydream: Barry's daydreams of married life with Sally are so idealistic, showing them happy and growing old. It's his idealized image of what it is to be a normal married couple.
Well, in a way he got his wish. They are (at least as far as we can tell - I assume we'll see more on Sunday) a normal couple. But their situation, with a son who lashes out, the two of them both drinking, and isolated from their former communities and lives, is clearly far from ideal.

I guess I just wasn’t expecting this at all. I’ve noticed that a lot of shows especially crime shows are afraid to end the same way breaking bad did like ozark and from what it looks like Barry as well. they want to be different but I’m kind of left on the fence starting to think this show might not end in a satisfying way. This might even be a dream sequence though.
But looking from Sally’s “fucked up” perspective, it kinda makes sense
      - Her parents never protect her and always side with Sam, who abused her a lot of time.
      - Barry always looking out for her and is the only one who listens to her and cares about her interests, unlike her other colleague like Natalie who betrayed her or Gene who only looks out for himself. Barry also helped her go further in her career (albeit it came from the moment she slapped him which sent him spiraling and went to kill people in the monastery afterward)
      - Barry was creepy and abusive to her but compared to everyone else, he only yelled at her just one time (unlike Sam, who hit her for years) and even when he suggested a super non-violent method at making Sally’s boss hanged herself, it was for Sally’s best interest.
      - Barry took the blames for the murder that Sally committed.

The fridge is a dead giveaway that Barry's dream of this life is not what he hoped for
Sally doesn't say a single in the word in this scene and the multiple wine bottles indicates that she's depressed that she never became the star she always wanted to be because she destroyed her reputation, her parents never really were on her side, and she ranaway and had a kid with a hitman
So yeah, she's probably not the best wife or mom
And then there's Barry who's a downright sociopath and probably doesn't feel guilt towards most the people he's killed or hurt except for maybe Fuches or Gene and definitely Chris and with all the bad decisions he made in L.A. he probably has a guilty conscience about all that's happened and what he did
Add that he's still socially awkward and doesn't understand people well and he's probably not the best dad
So yeah, Barry and Sally are definitely failing their son and are miserable

While the life Sally and Barry have built here doesn’t seem to be very happy or fulfilling, the eight year time skip adds a mountain of significance to the inevitable moment when fate comes knocking at their door.
They have a son. They have a marriage. They have a family. They’ve evaded capture for 8 years. In a lot of ways they’ve gotten away with it, but in a moral universe they’ve just lengthened the noose that’s going to hang them eventually.
The entire series, Barry’s core function has been burying corpses underneath him to keep himself above quicksand. He’s fully aware that he’s going to hell, and every new murder just grants him a brief extension until the ground finally swallows him up.
Thing is? The more you stretch your soul, brandishing sin against fate and death, the harder it snaps back when your fingers finally slip.
Barry never should have had a child. He’s a broken and violent man, and running from truth and responsibility is a part of who he is. Becoming an actor wasn’t a path to redemption, it was just a poetically appropriate method of pretending to be someone else. Every interaction he has with a normal person, he has to pretend to be someone else, the truth is just too terrible and he knows it.
The world already discovered what he was, and he cheated fate and stole a shred of happiness that wasn’t his with a woman just broken enough to love him.
Now he has something that the Barry from the pilot didn’t. Now he has something HE loves, something to truly lose, and the world’s going to take that thing away from him in the cruellest way possible. Not by killing his son, but by (I predict) showing him who his father truly is and making him hate him.
With all the pain and suffering he’s caused, the families he’s destroyed and the lies he’s told, simple death wouldn’t be enough for Barry to pay his debts. He’s got to know the pain of a man who loses his family.

Sarah Goldberg said Sally's hair is wrapped for a reason. Bill Hader said in an interview the 4th season ties either into the first episode or first season to make Barry a complete story. Remember from the first episode Sally reads the scene from Magnolia where she the wife has it out with the pharmacist who fills her husband's RXs who is dying of cancer. The wife says, "I have death all around me." My guess is that Sally has cancer or that Sally will attempt to kill herself like the wife did after getting her husband's RXs. I don't see Barry having a happy ending, which would move the series from the comedy to the drama category. Maybe Barry will kill himself like the Chechen assassin in season 1. Barry has to face accountablity this season.
