  • 12/22/2015 Update: If you are seeing ads with this video, please note that I am not making any money off of it. BMG Rights Management, EMI Music Publishing, and others have claimed copyright on this video, even though it is a parody that only utilizes the melody from Black Eyed Pea's "I Gotta Feeling." The new lyrics (that I wrote) transform the pop song into one that educates students on cellular respiration, and thus, the video should now fall under fair use, as far as I understand. I have no desire to make money off of this video. It is a not-for-profit educational video. I only want people to learn. However, as a simple high school teacher, I don't really have the time or money to fight the copyright claim, and I don't want the video removed or my youtube account banned. Nevertheless, I can take a few minutes to write this update and let people know that the music companies are monetizing these videos (which aren't even viral). #WTFU
A song about Cellular Respiration, based on Black Eyed Pea's "I Gotta Feeling."
Lyrics written by, song performed by, and Powerpoint slide show done by a simple high school science teacher named Mr. Hsu.
    mp3 available (finally):
    c3po.barnesos.net/~wakkonat/sh...
This song and video have been made solely for educational purposes. Its level of depth and detail into the process of cellular respiration are aimed at High School Honors Biology students (at least the ones I teach). If you find any errors or omissions (i.e. I didn't mention 1,3-biphosphoglycerate), this is due to the fact that I'm not teaching AP Biology or college-level Biology AND I'm being constrained by describing such a complex biochemical process through a fairly recent pop song with incredibly repetitive lyrics.
I actually performed this song for my students in class the day before our cellular respiration test. If you're lucky, you might find a video of such a live performance somewhere in the vast internet (quite a few of them were recording me singing it in class, after all). This video is a result of me taking a simple digital camera and aiming it at my computer to try and record the performance my students experienced (so sorry for the crude recording and poor quality).
I have recorded an mp3, and if I have time, I will find a place to upload it for public download, so that other Biology students can listen and study for their tests on cellular respiration. Also, if I have time, I may upload a better version of this video (powerpoint slide show and song), but teachers so rarely have time when we're doing things like writing tests, grading homework, and making parody songs for our students to actually enjoy what they are learning...

I discovered this song in 9th grade when trying to study for Biology Honors. I listened to it a lot in 11th grade to help me in AP Biology. Here I am in my freshman year of college listening to this to help me in BIO 2A. Each time I come back to this song, I understand it better. Thank you Mr. Hsu

I took the AP Bio test the year they changed everything, so I had no reliable study materials. If I were you, I would try taking the tests from 2015 and 2014. Time yourself, make note of anything that you find confusing. Try to be able to explain concepts in your own words. Above anything else, just relax and breathe. It's not the end of the world :)

Thanks for the advice man. I was just exaggerating when I said I was screwed, because at the pace i'm studying I actually have a good chance of passing, and practice questions always help.

    Lyrics:
    Cell respiration
    It’s a long complicated process
That I need to know for a bio test
But it turns my brain in a huge big mess
    Cell respiration
It breaks down food to release energy
    Food molecules are glucose specifically
You need oxygen to oxidize thoroughly
    Cell respiration (woo hoo)
It gives off some carbon dioxide
Also water’s made off to the side
But the ATP is why we got on this ride
    Cell respiration (woo hoo)
It’s made up of 3 main stages
But it takes up so many pages
And to know it all seems to take many ages
    Glycolosis (lysis means split)
Is what’s first up (In the cytoplasm)
    Takes one glucose (6 carbons)
    And splits it up
    To do this right
    (It) phosphorylates
    (From) 2 ATP
    (So) 2 ADP are made
Now that the glucose has phosphate
It breaks into 2 molecules that seem like mates
2 NAD+ come and oxidize them
Which means they take electrons and hydrogen (gen gen gen gen)
    Add free phosphates
    Now we’re set
    2 ADP (it’s really 4)
    And 3 carbons met
    Phosphates break off
    ATP made
Left with pyruvate (there’s 2 of them)
And they go to the Krebs Cycle, Krebs Cycle
    Which happens in the mitochondria
Oh no wait, not really, there’s transition step
    Let’s count the ATP
4 were made but 2 were spent
That means 2 ATP were profited in
    Glycolosis
    It didn’t need any oxygen
    2 NADH now have hydrogen
And 2 pyruvate molecules were made in the end
    Transition step (woo hoo)
    NAD+ oxidized pyruvate
1 carbon is lost along the way
And both molecules turn into Acetyl-CoA
Now 2 carbons (carried by coenzyme A)
Krebs cycle next (in the matrix)
    4 carbon molecules (already there)
The 2 connect (now 6 carbons)
    Gets oxidized (by NAD+)
    1 carbon left (CO2 gone)
Will do this twice (Numbers are doubled)
    4 carbons are left
    1 ATP made
    Oxidize (by the)
    NAD+ (and)
    FADH
    Molecules change (no carbons lost)
    Atoms rearrange (still 4 carbons)
    Looks like the start (wooooo)
And then we’ll do it again
Krebs cycle repeats twice because 2 pyruvate
    Were made in (gly)colysis
    Let’s count it up
    We now have
    4 ATP
    6 CO2
    And then these guys
    10 NADH
    2 FADH2
    Bring electron to ETC
    Electron Transport Chain
    Inner membrane (brane brane brane)
    Of the mitochondria
Proteins in lane (lane lane lane lane)
    Electrons from NADH
Pass through 3 protein (teins teins teins)
    Electrons from FADH2
pass through 2 proteins (teins teins teins)
As the electron pass through, the proteins
Pump out hydrogen ions called protons to the
    Inter (inter) membrane space
    A concentrated place (place)
Protons will return through the (A)ATP synthase
    ATP synthase (makes)
    32 ATP from returning protons
6 oxygen molecules get the electrons
And they combine to make 6 water with hydrogen ions
    Cell respiration (woo hoo)
Now I know the entire process
If I study I’ll do well on the bio test
And afterwards I’ll get a good good rest

Dude, you are awesome! It's teachers like you that keep students interested in school and their subjects. I know in my high school years, I learned ALOT more from my fun instructors than I did from the drab plug and chug instructors. Keep it up! Your changing lives!

You clarified everything so much. I didn't understand ANYTHING about cellular respiration before (well except for glycolysis) but then you explained everything and made it all seem so simple. Thanks a bunch! :D

This is weirdly addicting. Thank you for making this video. At first I didn't understand anything about cellular respiration, but now I can thank you for helping me get 90% on my exam! ^^ Now the only problem I have is resisting the temptation to sing "CELLULAR RESPIRATION, WOOHOO".

Thanks a lot Mr. Hsu, I am actually taking an introductory college level bio class and this vid has helped so much in grasping the main points of cellular respiration, which is basically what we need to know. Again thanks a ton, amazing video!!!

Honestly... This was pretty much the reason I passed the AP Biology exam this past year. Thank you so much. I did study and I did do well on my bio test! Keep it up!!

Our teacher showed us this video in bio today because we have a test tomorrow on cellular respiration. I had no idea what was happening with the Kreb's cycle in the video, but I think I will get it when I look through my textbook. This really helped me understand glycolysis, the transition step and the electron transport chain. Thanks!

Our teacher played this song in class, and everyone exchanged some really awkward looks because of his voice. Honestly I think it's a really nice thing he embarrassed himself for his students sake XD Props to you!!

Everything on cellular respiration was but a blur, a headache and an inch away from me throwing my biology book out the window. I just have to say, you've simplified the entire cycle; 15 pages of arduous, tidius reading broken down into 5 minutes and it was CLEAR. Because of this song, i aced this portion of test today. THANK YOUUUUUU!

Thank you for making this song! I didn't do so well on my cellular respiration quiz the first time. While studying for my retake, I found your video. Now I actually somewhat understand what's going on during cellular respiration and can ace my quiz! Thank you again!
