  • Project Thistle will track my conversion of a VW Crafter to a Camper Van/ Motorhome.
Thistle started life as an Ambulance in London.
Over the next few months (years!) I will be recording progress during the conversation.

Yes one of the lowest mileage ex Ambulances I had seen until someone brought me 2002 ex StJohn Renault Master with 22k on the clock to check over last year!

My 2004 PTS Sprinter was just a big empty van, no bulkhead, no overhead cabinets or extra seats. Just a few big yellow bars, an MDF cabinet and a set of rails in the floor to fasten the stretcher. Full windows down both sides - all tinted, but no opening sections.

I take it that this is too heavy for anyone with a category b license ( license issued after 1997 )
They do make a great camper.
People have been putting the bed sideways and getting away with it, some have small pull out extensions.

@@CriftinsCampers That's not actually a bad idea if you ever intend to sell it on. Plenty of people out there interested in ex ambulances but can't legally drive one. Stating it is ok for category b license holders to drive could fetch more interest.
I'm sure that's the last thing your thinking about now though. I'll sub so I can keep up with your progress, very interesting indeed.
Thanks for taking the time to make and post these videos.
I was about to watch Hugh's video on, Is there rot behind my insulation? when I read your comment lol, so nosy me had to check your van out, glad I did.

@@CriftinsCampers Yes, I have been subbed and following Project Amber for a while now, great channel. He stated that the wiring was a nightmare to sort out.
Was good to see he eventually got his clutch and gearbox sorted out.
I cheated lol, I purchased a Talbot express 1000d campervan a while back with an autohomes fit out, similar to an autosleeper fit out to some extent.
The driver and passenger chairs both swivel (captains chairs ) gives a small van a roomy feel although the bed needs set up, a small price to pay as I find it no bother.
It has two coil ( double ) springs added both sides on back, power steering, gear linkage modification, eberspacher diesel heater fitted and I have 200 watts of solar panels to fit. This was all done already except the solar.
It was a great deal. I could not have done a good van conversion for the price I paid ( price of van and fit out )
I can't really imagine that I would fit a van out that would really improve much on this and as it's my daily driver, two belted seats behind driver and passenger seats is priceless.
A newer van would be nice but old school engines and less electrics suits me lol.
Some day I may tackle a van fit out for fun, I'm a carpenter and that part intrigues me.
Can't wait to see what you do, I love peoples inventive ideas but not so much copy cat ( monkey see monkey do ) builds.
The bed along the back and no built in toilet room seem to be the norm now, my toilet room is at the back, does not look intrusive and I would never dream to be without it's privacy. I'm going to modify it a little but that's it.
I have some ideas where a toilet would have a wooded box around it with a foam seat lid, on the wall a fold out (wrap around wall that quickly bolts into place giving a full size toilet room with hinged door, only opened up when I have company but a usable seat and space the rest of the time.
Feel free to use if you like and I'm sure I could explain better but I'd say like most, you have your own ideas and needs.
Sorry for rambling on lol, I can't help myself sometimes. I am using the on-board keyboard and am surprised myself at how much text I manage.
I have a keyboard but love using a mouse on my trouser leg, have done for years now, lazy bad habit but only lets me type when I really want to say something, I think I should write a book sometime to get it out of my system ha!

@@CriftinsCampers Yes, I think I did but time will tell as it is old, 1992 and parts are getting rarer by the day I suppose but it is my introduction into campers to see how I like the idea and most of all, the reality lol.
A newer and more popular van almost had me down the DIY route myself.
Here in Northern Ireland there are plenty of badly converted vans with tax book changed from van to camper.
I was going to buy one, gut it but re-purpose some of the stuff.
Some unfinished projects as well all pretty reasonably priced.
My van is in great order for it's age with around 90000 miles on the clock and that's nothing for a diesel.
Doing one yourself though I guess would give more satisfaction and a great feeling of accomplishment.

pa maj there is not a weight limit for a category B license. You can drive a 10 ton camper if you want. Weight restrictions are only for commercial vehicles.
