@@wx811 Nonsense. Though what you say is in fact true of most of the great arias written for huge spinto voices (think "Nessun Dorma" or "che gelida manina"). But the part being played here is that of a very young and naive guy and so this is THE classic leggero piece. For this the voice should sound light, flexible and pure (ie short of upper partial harmonics); the voice Florez has. It's horses for courses - someone like Domingo would really struggle with this one.
I remember watching 'Pavarotti: my life in 7 arias' where Juan Diego Flores consulted Pavarotti- Maestro- for advice before Juan Diego took the role. After he gave Juan Diego advice, Pavarotti said that Juan Diego would do just fine. And it sounds like the advice was perfect.
I was at the performance of 'La Fille' last night w/ Florez and Damrau at the SF Opera and was amazed and loved the entire production. I got chills when he hit the high-Cs and the thunderous applause and shouts of BRAVO these 2 talented singers got were very well deserved.
A magnificent tenor, probably the best thing I've heard since Alfredo Kraus in this register.. I almost cried when I first heard him which hand' occurred since my listening to Franco Corelli.
I just saw this production last week at the Royal Opera House!!!! It was INCREDIBLE. The C's were perfect. Dessay was great, too! I was so incredibly lucky enough to be let in the stage door, and got Florez and Dessay's autograph! It was incredible.
his best performance on youtube by far. hits the high C's as well as every other note dead on. and with relative ease, that's the true sign of a well trained singer.
I too saw the live broadcast last Sat...it was amazing, both he & Natalie Dessay!! He had like a 3 minute standing ovation after this aria! Those high c's were shimmering! Gorgeous to hear & watch! ;)
I saw a recital tonite in Santa Monica andh is singing was astounding. The piano player so-so. But JDF was mindboggling. His voice is soft, but the delicacy and nuances are utterly beautiful. A real artist. True elegance.
This production has returned to London with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Florez and I can confirm BOTH were WONDERFUL, TERRIFIC, MAGNIFICENT. Both suit their respective roles perfectly for this comic opera. Nothing beats seeing them sing this live.... LOVED it and them!
Saw this a few hours ago at Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, UK). Interesting to see the same set is used (maps with 'topography', a lovely set). Had to listen to mes amis again, have been humming it in the pub since seeing.
It's highly dispensable, I hate hearing clappings, And if someone wants to download the song through UA-cam you have the claps in there and it's annoying
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I love any tricks you can give me
I also saw the HD live broadcast at my local theater. His high c's were shining. I'm so surprised he didn't do an encore. I wasn't familiar with this opera, but fell in love with it and the performances. Wonderful!
This is the piece of the opera that got Luciano Pavarotti on the genius tenor level. He impressed everyone. Later, he said JDF will be his successor, and it's kind of symbolic that he's singing to perfection the piece that sky rocketed his master.
This production was also seen in London with Florez. I have seen him at Covent Garden since 2002, and he always gets a great ovation there. He is simply the best bel canto singer for roles from Donizetti and Rossini for a very long time. He also has the great advantage over Pavarotti and such-like, in that he looks good and can actually act convincingly on stage
o The Observer, Sunday 23 May 2010 .... “As her shy, knobbly-kneed boyfriend Tonio, Juan Diego Flórez returned to wow us with those famous top Cs and pure, unsullied vocal gymnastics. Only Pavarotti, in living memory, could make it all sound so similarly effortless...”

Magnificent singing in an opera that I once heard (charitably) described as musical mush. I saw it some years ago in Sydney with Joan Sutherland and I would endorse that view of the opera itself. That great artists waste their talents on this work is incredible.
Saw him last night (Friday, the 19th) at the Met. Although he's still suffering from the cold. he was superb. "saagua1953" makes a good point. If you're seeing the opera staged, Florez has it hands down over most (overweight, over-aged) tenors. The singing soars and he looks and acts like someone who could believably cause Marie (and most everyone else) to swoon.
Juan Diego Flórez in Madrid: Teatro Real de Madrid.2.6.2009 (JMI) There is no doubt that Juan Diego Flórez is one of the very greatest singers nowadays: in his own repertoire, he is literally incomparable with any other singer. What I have discovered in the last two years however is that the Peruvian divo has become a singer who shines in a very special way in concerts and in recital.
Madcap Soprano, Brave Tenor Enliven Donizetti Opera in London, Bloomberg News, 12 January 2007 The brave tenor given the Olympic task of hurling out the famous top Cs is Juan Diego Florez, and when he does you know that you're in the presence of one of the greatest tenori di grazia (``graceful tenors'') of our time. He hits each of Tonio's treacherous notes with an unerring ping, and with no hint of strain. He doesn't slide up to them but attacks them staccato, just as the score demands.
Just back from seeing this at Covent Garden. What a breathtaking performance. Natalie Desay was also an absolute star with a lively display of perfect comic timing.
Those 9 top C's towards the end are SO precise. He sounds like a violin.
I also recommend tenor Yang Yang's version
Moose DC absolutely

He is wonderful! Besides the great interpretation, I believe that his looks make him a perfect suit for this role.

Those high C's are nothing short of spectacular!
What and incredible interpretation of Juan Diego Flores magnificent voice and great interpretation on stage how not to love this performance. =D
i could watch this a million times and never get tired of it.
Bravo!
Bravissimo!
Florez has a great voice. His high C´s sounds terriffic.
Mr.Florez owns this really he does, so easy and still with emotion and the acting that is required to make it an epic performance. Master
Bravissimo!
Along with his vocal skills, the sincere and dynamic acting performance make Juan Diego so unique and far from other tenors of this age.
saw him perform this at the NY MET. He had a 102 fever and went on anyway. Merci Monsier JDF!!! et grazie aussi to Gabba02 for posting!
Magnifique! Quel ténor extraordinaire, comparable à Pavarotti.
Musique splendide. Merci.
1 Pavarotti=35 Florez.
Hm, you will recognise Pavarotti's voice always...
Um.... Nnoooo... Pavarotti he is not. No comparison in this rep.
His voice is naturally so high it's easier for him to pull this off than most others.
Whoever taught him french did a perfect job. Crystal clear pronunciation
He is this perfect singer - from head to toe. The Highest class professional! Very smart and decent guy.
He is a Really good actor, I think. I don't know french, but I can see what he is saying.

I saw this production a few years ago in SF.. Went 3 times and he did an encore each time after this aria. Amazing..
McNulty I saw the opera at the metropolitan opera house in nyc. Yes, he did an encore and was amazing. Unforgettable.
A magnificent tenor, probably the best thing I've heard since Alfredo Kraus in this register.. I almost cried when I first heard him which hand' occurred since my listening to Franco Corelli.
HE is so frekin cute. sweet. on top of good.
This is a golden age of leggero tenors
Lawrence Ge and we can live now and watch to these excellent voices
Stone leggero is correct

He is just great 😊
This has become his signature piece. Standing ovation everytime with encores. And rightly deserved.
I just saw this production last week at the Royal Opera House!!!! It was INCREDIBLE. The C's were perfect. Dessay was great, too! I was so incredibly lucky enough to be let in the stage door, and got Florez and Dessay's autograph! It was incredible.
Grandioso Juan Diego Florez!
his best performance on youtube by far. hits the high C's as well as every other note dead on. and with relative ease, that's the true sign of a well trained singer.
Best than Pavarotti's?

Magnifiquement chanté, c'est merveilleux. .merci beaucoup

Bravo !!!! Merci !!
GREAT JUAN!! the best of a new generation of tenors!

One of the best tenorinos in the world with an impeccable technique.
Juan Diego Florez is a Peruvian tenor one of the greatest tenors of the world for those who do not know who it is. Peru to the world

Just back from seeing this at Covent Garden. What a breathtaking performance. Natalie Desay was also an absolute star with a lively display of perfect comic timing.
Florez and Javier Camarena (who got an encore at the MET-performance) seem to alternate the role of Tonio-and both are simply fantastic.
Spettacolare.....
