The Drums of "Lust For Life" by Iggy Pop | What's That Sound? EP 16
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 лис 2022
- The drum beat for Iggy Pop's classic was inspired by Motown, but recorded in a way that makes it sound more aggressive than most records of its time, with big, lively, bombastic energy. How'd they get it?

This song immediately makes me picture Ewen Mcgregor, strung out, hauling ass down the street from the cops. 😂
As it should
The song "Lust of Life" was co-written by David Bowie on a ukulele.
Bewley Bros.
My very first snare when I was 10 in school band was a Ludwig Acrylite! I’m now 54 and it’s still my favorite sounding snare of all time regardless of what brand of kit I mix it in with.
No other snare has such a classic tight traditional crack with no cheap 90’s sounding ring to it like this model.
They are also built like tanks! I (shamefully) backed over mine with my car rushing to a gig one time. It somehow made it through the show. I later had to get out a hammer in the garage to make everything nice and circular again, and now you couldn't tell even anything happened to it. I adore the thing and I'll never give it up, especially since I have some fun history with it!
@@Mario_DiSanto Great story! But I totally agree with you. Those of us who love the Ludwig Acrolite will never sell them.
finally. This is one of my favorite drum sounds and the beat is as timeless as the tone!!!
That song has always been a favorite of mine. I used to play in a band from D.C. named Black Market Baby, and our drummer ,Tommy Carr, always used the Ludwig Acrylite snare no matter what drum set he was using. Afterwhile I said to him," You've got a very good ear for drum sounds, that Ludwig snare kills them all." The demo you guys just did proves that once again. Thank you so much KC
This sounds great! Really nailed the sound.
Such an energetic song, one of my 70's favorites! Fantastic reproduced drumtrack and a joy to follow the process!!
One of my favorite drum performances ever. This was really interesting and very informative, thanks!
Really great job recreating such an instantly identifiable sound!
The kick tip? Outstanding!
would love to hear the drums from Al Green's call me album played by Al Jackson Jr.
Love that record & drum sound
Seconded!
Yes! Pick a Willie Mitchell Hi recording. Al Green would be great
yes please
I fecking love that kick sound
How about Elvin Jones' drums on A Love Supreme by John Coltrane next?
The rhythm to 'Lust for Life' bears a striking similarity to the 1966 single 'You Can't Hurry Love' by The Supremes and is probably where the drummer Hunt Sales got the beat from - he almost certainly didn't use a 20" kick but a shallow depth 24" or even a 26" without any muffling to get that wide-open sound
That "mid 60s Motown" influence made it completely original in 1977. The song sounds both older and newer than the year it was made, but NOTHING like _anybody else_ in 77. Love it.
I wish they could do a video on the "For those about to rock" drum sound ⚡️
Cool video by the way thanks again Reverb !
Great job!
Great video - Love this drum sound - I always thought it screamed overheads!
Request - John Bonham's 'When The Levee Breaks' sound in all its expansive glory. Bonus / alternate track - Did he really use four sticks for 'Four Sticks'? (And if so, why don't we do this more often? The sound is amazing!)
Awsome work like the difference listening in front of the drums and inside the kit ....glyn johns created a very efficient way to put the microphones in and out the drums with a very powerful result but i think you already know that ;-))...thanx for posting this excellent video ...
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music
Lovely. How about Ringo '67 era? Hello Goodbye or I am the Walrus. Thanks
my god....youtube is the best thing ever
Hunt Sales is the last of the ass kickers of rock drumming. What he does is Vinnie Colaiuta ideas from a Bonham/ Mitch Mitchell approach. The way he messes with the beat is his own.
This is drums for life!
In utero! My favorite drum sound.
The big reverby untreated room in steve albini’s studio seems responsible for that! 😊 can learn a ton by knowing all that that man does recording wise. Lots a stuff on here on him
Great bass drum sound
I’ve been wanting this info forever
Colin Thurston, the engineer on this track, produced the Human League’s 1st two albums 👍🏻
nailed it
Great video, thanks guys! I would love to see how they made the drum sound of "I.G.Y" by Donald Fagen!
Thank you, Bo Diddley
amazing! would love a video explaining the drum sound of hard to explain by the strokes. amazing that it is not a drum machine
There’s a great article explaining it I came across a long time ago, but I’d love to see it recreated
I'd love to see an episode on the drum sounds of Grizzly Bear, specifically from Painted Ruins or Shields
Ditto.
Vekatimest drums are the GOAT tho...that bass drum sounds huge!!
I assumed the kick was bigger and now I’m so happy my kick is 20”
It was…26 or 28!
excellent
You guys should defo do R U Mine? By arctic monkeys killer drums sound!
Definitely! Love the drum tones from the AM record
Love it! Please give 'in utero' a try!
How about the intro drums to “Strange Times” by The Black Keys? Attack & Release a transition album from their “homemade” recordings to using a studio and an outside producer. Patrick Carney may have been using a John Bonham replica kit, but he may have done the ‘70s tea towel trick for a deader sound on parts of the kit as well.
The Stone Roses drum sound would be awesome
His sound is an excellent example of what you can achieve when you know how to TUNE YOUR DRUMS!!!! He didn't do anything extraordinary, he just knew what he needed to do to get that sound. His sound was powered up through the roof in Tin Machine. He always had a great sound and knew how to get it! Learn how to tune them boys! The only way to be versatile is to know how to tune them!
Good tear down. Great song.
what are the shoes/boots the drummer is wearing? thanks
Jet is still sending cheques to Iggy ! Best line in the song “ I drive a GTO “
ABBA-The Winner Takes It All -please🙏🏻🙏🏻
Are those 2 AEA R84s on room mic?
Best drum hook in history
Everytime I sit down on my Ludwig bebop type kit I have to play this beat or I haven’t had a successful practice session
Please do Joy division, disorder or interzone would be great
Hunt Sales-son of Soupy. Love strange connections like that.
This song + The White Stripe’s “Screwdriver” = Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”
1:40 I'd like to know some more on that pitch bend.
That's a very Bonham-y sound. And certainly whoever played on 'Passenger' sounds a lot like Bonham.
The “Lust For Life” kit was a Ludwig, with a 26” bass drum, and a Supraphonic 6.5”x 14” snare. So you were totally in the ballpark.
Definitely, jazz drums+agressive and tight playing = beuty. Also Barracuda by Heart. Sounds exactly like Bonham, especially the feel.
@@Steefanari Well, Barracuda was "heavily inspired" by Achilles Last Stand :)
@@Steefanari Yes. The same way Eye of the Tiger sound like Cozy Powell played on it.
It was Hunt Sales, the drummer mentioned in the video. He did the whole 'Lust For Life' album.
Hunt is still active in Austin, TX did you reach out to him?
Sounds like Iggy was doing his take on You Can’t Hurry Love.
Hunt Sales said that the Motown groove was his blueprint.
Please make an episode for The Fearless Flyers drum sound by Nate Smith
Hi just a suggestion or two ;-)) ..what about Tchad Blake he 's got a very special way recording drums especially with soul coughing using a cup of water inside the bass drum ??
Nobody's talking about The The and mind bomb album who came out in 88'
the production and the sound is outstanding especialy with "good morning beautiful " a very good track
i'm curious to hear your impressions about this one ...excellent chanel by the way thanx ....
The 24x14 is a serious, serious sound.
O darn. So I still have to get a 24 then.. I figured as much.
Awesome. Can you do Vitamin C by Can?
How bout Mitch Mitchells sound on "Still Raining, Still Dreaming"?
Yess!! Always loved the drums off Electric Ladyland, especially the phasey effects.
When they brought in the D12 kick mike, I thought all right. Here comes the color! And then he says this mic sounds like crap! Lol!
Hunt Sales, son of comedian Soupy Sales. Great drummer!
I guess Reverb has a problem with Blumlein - they insist on referring to a pair of Fig 8 mics as an "X-Y" pair! Hah! 😅
Great job guys - except, I wish you would have used at least a 24" kick, tho Hunt always used a 26" Ludwig - keep em coming! 👊🏼🤘🏻
You can't hurry love ..
When The Levee Break, or
Bright Lights by Gary Clark Jr.
When the Levee Breaks, recorded with only two M160s!
@@rickhbrown Thank you I know that, just interested in hearing how close they will get. Great series.
Choose life
I think a larger diameter bass drum with a wooden beater would have been better. Good job!
Do In Rainbows next.
George of the Jungle + Can’t Hurry Love = Lust for Life
didn't understand a thing, but very cool !
Hunt is a great drummer. Tin Machine, Iggy, Todd Rundgren.
it would be really helpful to hear the mics before and after EQ, or for that matter. hear the dry mics before anything.
I’d bet the original recording used one mic for the drums
I know on my cover of it I used one mic.
Do something from Kid A please! "National Anthem" "Optimistic" "Morning Bell".... anything really!
You should do the double drummer sound of nonagon infinity by king gizzard.
SLINT Spiderland
George of the Jungle.
Save on production costs and do "Are you gonna be my girl" next
Bears a faint resemblance to Ballroom Blitz.
Wow, these fools really ripped off Jet...
the audacity
Lol good one. Funny thing is iggy pops drummer lifted this beat from another song.
@@colin6603 Yeah - Hunt says he really liked Cant Hurry Love and George of the Jungle, amd thats what was on his mind 🤘🏻😁
It's hunt Sales . THE most iconic drum track ever. He's the talent behind a lot of musicians. He has new music out....big legal mess records. Check it out!!
@@bigkickleo cant hurry love woah yeh i totally hear that thanks for the info
"when the levee breaks" of course
Ludwig Acro!
LCD Soundsystem drums would be wicked
Listen to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas song, "I'm Ready for Love." Just sayin.
7:45
This is how ALL drums should sound. I would like metal if the drums sounded real.
Right?
この曲のバスドラって応援団みたいな音がしますよね。
feels like there's a bit of "phaseyness" going on in the full mix. i really liked the room sound, it just needed a bit more sm57 from the snare, and maybe the batter side. imho..
shh. This isn't a home recording forum circa 2004...
Acro Snare is 5.5 by 14…not 5..and …..BD Hunt used on LFL was a 26 or 28” BD!
Oops…Acro IS 5”…..always thought 5.5……but..know for sure Hunt did not use a 20” BD to record that….
Sorry dude but you've gotta hit the drums WAY harder than that to get the right sound. Hunt Sales was a beast.
Yeah! Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. He is a badass drummer.
I always assumed the kick on this song was a long floor tom of some kind.
would love feels like we only go backwards by tame impala or race for the prize by the flaming lips
Skate away by Dire Straits would be great.
what about the version where you don't need $10,000 worth of mics? we get it that you're just doing a thinly veiled ad for items on the site, but the sales are going to come from the version you didn't do, where you pick out the mics that get it sounding nearly the same but cost a 1/10 of the price overall...
Should do a vid of the insane drumming of drumbo, captain beefhearts crazy drummer.
Ahh good call!!
Some sample copyright-free lyrics to go with that copyright-free music, for ya:
Here comes Jimmy Yuan again
With the narcotics and booze
The epidermal mechanism
He's gonna pay his way through medical school
FOOL IN THE RAIN.
I love these explorations but they always seem to use Frankenstein kits from a grab bag. I don’t doubt that studios sometimes do this but on the other hand didn’t musicians show up with a whole kit
Do you think they actually used a side chain back then? Are you cheating or is this legit?
kek
This is cool but to me the drum choices/tuning wasn’t quite right. Def a clappier & higher pitched snare than the song used and kick a bit too tight. Drummer rushing a little too but I can’t blame him. Fun vid
