- My favourite piece to play and appropriate for the festive season, Pletnev's transcription of the "Pas de deux" from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker combines exquisite music with masterly piano writing.
When playing it, you get a strong sense of the orchestra that the piano is trying to illustrate: harps at the outset, woodwind dialogue in the central section, sweeping string melodies omnipresent, and rapid flute scales embellishing the zenith. Playing this is about as close as I've ever come to being a conductor! Credit must go to Mikhail Pletnev, a true virtuoso, whose transcriptions are a treasure trove for pianists and enthusiasts alike.

After fawning over this piece for a couple years i finally decided to learn it a coupme days ago! I made it up to around 2:30 thanks to UA-cam tutorials, but none of them cover any of those insanely hard super fast scales (sorry idk what theyre called). But i feel like the piece wouldn't be complete without them in the grande finale
From minute 2:35 this crescendo is simply what I call perfection. Closed my eyes and made me feel like I am there listening live. Great master piece. Big thumbs up from Malta Europe :)
I've seen this difficult piece tried by many, but you're the only on that keeps the melodic push going in spite of all the hand crossings. Well done.

How can you memorise so many things at once like the spaces between each key and such a huge song at once? I never could comprehend how pianists memorise so much and play it without messing up with only practice.
Haha, good question! Spaces, I think, are a product of muscle memory (which remembers the geography of the keyboard). The musical content is partly muscle memory (fingers knowing the patterns instinctively), partly conscious memory (telling the fingers which patterns to play), and partly understanding of the musical language (i.e. structure, knowing that a piece is probably going to form a dominant pedal before the recap etc.). The combination of these allows a musician to memorise large chunks of music, which probably seems more impressive than it is!

Why am I just now finding this? You played my favorite Tchaikovsky piece just beautifully.
So very beautifully performed! I know that Tchaikovsky wrote this upon hearing the news that his beloved sister had passed away. He expressed so many sentiments/emotions in this very mournful, haunting and most beautiful musical piece.

Luke Faulkner awesome :D I started recently (a year or two ago) and I know some people get discouraged by being older and not able to play as well as people younger than them, but I didn't. I love being a beginner because I have so much to learn!
