I lost my hearing in my left side at 34 weeks pregnant and just got my cochlear implant! I felt overwhelmed at activation too…and sort of felt bad for not feeling as happy as I wanted to be. But I had similar day 1 results! Hearing loss and SSD is crazy but I have so much more gratitude in life for the little things. Thank you for sharing your story! ❤
I’m so sorry that happened to you!! Thank you for sharing. I’ve heard of others losing their hearing while pregnant too. I don’t think you should feel bad about how you were feeling that day. It is so much to process and I still struggle with the emotional aspect of it sometimes. Wishing you all the best!
This really gives me hope. I lost hearing in one ear three weeks ago and I am already talking to my doctors about a cochlear implant in the future. Thanks for sharing!
This makes me so happy. I work for a hospital system and we do a lot of cochlear implants. I love seeing the number of people of all ages from toddler To elderly who are helped. Best of luck to you!
I had my surgery on March 27th of this year and I was activated on April 9th. My activation was similar to yours. I could hear and understand speech pretty much right away. Yes it sounded very robotic at first. Now a few weeks activated I'm able to distinguish who's speaking to me. There natural voices are underneath the robotic tone. I'm guess the brain is trying to mesh them together. That takes time from what I was told. I lost my hearing in my right ear almost 9 months ago now. Those who get these implants within a short amount of time tend to do really well. My doctors have told me I'm ahead of where I should be. My advice even though I've only been activated a few weeks is to slow down and get overwhelmed too fast. Taking a slow approach is good.
Our surgery and activation were so close together! Thanks for sharing a little of your story!! I’m glad your activation went well and that you continue to be ahead of the curve. It’s an amazing thing to experience. Overall I’ve found my CI helpful already. I have been doing a lot better locating sound and I just feel more balanced. I’m going to my first concert with it this weekend… we’ll see how that goes!!
@@nikkiplantsthings good luck with the concert. Go in with low expectations. Don't expect great results with music right away. Music isn't an easy to do out the gate.
Please keep us updated on your journey. Lost my hearing exactly one month ago. Audiologist recommended a CI, ENT just prescribed me a high dose of a new steroid. My initial steroid injection and round of oral steroids gave me about 20% hearing in my bad ear, but with no word recognition. The ENT said I should wait 8-12 months before deciding on a CI, just in case the hearing returns a bit more.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. I tried everything at the beginning and got a little bit back. But no word comprehension with it. I got my CI 13 months after my hearing loss. Wishing you all the best!! It’s such a difficult thing to go through.
Yes! I started having tinnitus when I lost my hearing. When I have my processor on I can still hear it but only slightly and and I really don’t notice it much unless I focus on it. When I take my processor off my tinnitus gets louder. I would consider mine mild. It’s more like white noise or crickets in the background. Do you have tinnitus?
So happy for you, Nikki! Your new hearing will be like a whole new life adventure!
So true!! It’s already been an amazing journey, but I’m excited to see where it takes me 😊

What a cool job!! CIs are incredible. I’m so grateful it was even an option for me and can’t wait to progress and improve!

Thanks for you sharing your story! I'm curious how you long you lost your hearing before you were given steroids?
Good for you Nikki👍👌
Thank you!!
❤👏🍀
I’m curious…what caused the sudden hearing loss? Cholesteatoma?
It just happened randomly last year. I was told it was probably caused by a virus 🤷♀️
When you lost your hearing, did you have tinnitus? If yes, how bad was it? And also, did it go away when they turned it on/when you’re wearing it?
