Thank you Jamel! In memory of: Cory Wells February 5, 1941 - October 20, 2015 (age 74). They say he wasn't ever into drugs and just was a good all around guy! Thanks Cory!

Is he the vocalist in this song? I can’t remember all those years ago. My late husband used to play this song and a few others by Three Dog Night. He took me to see them live in 1970, two days before I delivered our only child, a daughter. Nice memories.

Suddenly I just now burst into tears, remembering my late husband taking me to see this guy singing his heart out. It was two days before giving birth to our only child, a daughter in 1970. The tears? Well he’s gone now after being soulmates for 50+ years, my daughter just tested positive for Covid19 and I can’t go to her, being very disabled. But it will all be ok, with time. Goddam!! What an incredible performance!

There was a lot of groups back then both black & white who the music industry didn’t want to show their faces because of how they sounded. What most of us forget is that most of this soul music came from black people who never got the credit they deserved for writing such amazing songs. When you look into the back grounds of these groups they all came from a place that heard songs originally sang in Juke Joints like Jerry Lee Lewis. I’m so glad times changed & now people don’t have to hide I just wish that the people who sang songs originally are given the credit that’s properly deserved & earned.

Cory Wells had two strong things going for him here. First, his incredible voice. You really need to be a good vocalist to pull off a song like this, otherwise it's just a pose. Secondly, he had that marvelous, on point technically fierce band behind him.

I was fortunate to have caught Three Dog Night live 3 times in the space of a couple of months when they reformed for a brief period in the early 1980s and went out to play small venues. It was in northeast Ohio at both the Akron Agora and the Cleveland Agora. They really sounded fantastic and played all their hits - this despite singer Chuck Negron's continuing descent into an extremely harrowing years-long battle with heroin addiction that probably none of us knew about at the time. Then at around 3/4 of the way through their set, Cory Wells did this song, and it was the hands-down show-stopper EVERY TIME. He had us all up on our feet as he did his maniacal "HOLD HER, SQUEEZE HER, NEVER LEAVE HER, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA TRY, TRY, TRY, ...." jumping up and down like a soulful madman while Mike Alsup delivered his superbly tasteful lead electric guitar lines. They must have played this for at least 8 minutes every time. We went WILD!

One thing I enjoy about this era is, in many cases, the voices that come out of the singers are not what you expect. 3 Dog Night, Doobies, Grand Funk RR, ELO and so on... their power and talent can take you off guard unless you grew up listening. I enjoy seeing the faces on younger folks change when they first see these bands ready to play, only seeing the fashions that were in at the time, the hair, the plan venues... then they play and sing and the skepticism goes away. True talent, no machines, no auto tune, sounded the same live as on the radio... a pleasure to hear.

So enjoying you enjoying rediscovering this music! Back then, Rock critic magazines like Creem were like a bible for us who loved music. We knew all the band members and sometimes their stories. It was a rich experience. Others have suggested Three Dog Nights' "Eli's Coming". It just reminded me that during that time some records that were always playing in our house, were Laura Nyro (Eli's Coming) and Blood Sweat and Tears.

There are recordings of this song as far back as the REAL vocal original by Bing Crosby in 1933, and by everyone from Ruth Etting, Frank Sinatra, and Little Miss Cornshucks, to The Platters, Frankie Avalon, Aretha Franklin, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Otis Redding, Ella Fitzgerald, and on and on, As recent as a performance by Chang Po Ching on 'The Voice' in 2018.

I've honestly never heard their cover of this song! Really enjoyed it! Now, if you'd like to see another band perform this song, take a look at this version. The band is called The Commitments, and the clip is from the movie of the same name. The movie was about a guy in Dublin, Ireland who creates a band to bring soul music to the people of Dublin. They all performed the music themselves and the lead singer, Decco Cuffe (played by Andrew Strong), has got a hell of a voice: ua-cam.com/video/PKfHC5eY5CI/v-deo.html

Thanks for showing this band. They were a band, not some vocalists with backup groups. They must have been on the Top 40 continuously for my entire high school. Always on the AM radio. Unfortunately, most thought of them as a "pop" group as a result. But they had the groove and the best songs available to them. Song suggestion- "It's For You" shows their tremendous harmony.

First time hearing this and if you have never heard Otis, this is a great interpretation. Only..... I have! For me, the slower tempo of Cody’s version is where you start to compare, try as you might not to. His voice is well up to the challenge, which in itself is a massive achievement but Otis sets a high bar and he’s still king.😎
