The appropriate word i think is being respectful and kind towards other people. In the Philippines, we address people NANAY(mom), TATAY(father or dad) LOLA, LOLO(grandma, grandpa) ATE(elder girl sibling), KUYA(elder boy sibling) even if they are not related to us. We also use po or opo to show respect to our parents, older relatives and to others. Sometimes or most of the times, Filipinos tend to have this inferiority complex attitude when they meet foreigners or people who are more educated, or meet rich people. We are humbled in the sense that we Filipinos, majority of us do not show some kind of entitlement attitude towards other people because they belong to upper class kind of people in our society but for some of us they do look down on others. Filipinos value family or community ties kind of interaction. We love to laugh, have some fun, talk to other people and that's why we are a HAPPY PEOPLE. We do not confront proud, toxic people in order to maintain the peace, we just avoid or stay away from them.

We do need to treat people equally even if we are not equal because that is just fairness to all human beings. That avoids dissent and feelings of being ignored. there you go!
Humble is a character and of being wise. You are humble not because you have nothing but you know that you know that you know. Trump is the definition of being humble because He tried to stop the "bragging culture" where the result is hurting yourself. You can sense you have a good heart when you are humble.
You are lucky to have each other especially you to have a Christian wife who has good moral values. Your wife is correct, being humble is not about your race or how you were brought up. It's about one's innate character.
