I’ve have 5 hives now, 2 new nucs. So far I’ve lost 4 hives started from packaged bees and never lost a hive from a nuc and successful split last year!

Great video David. This is perfect just what a new beekeeper or any number of years someone has needs to see! Spring has finally came to Utah!! The last of the snow has finally gone! We have temperatures in the mid 50's. I caught my first swarm today ! Without even trying. I had set up a hive for my package delivery next week. From my first hive that didn't make it through the winter. It had a few frames with honey. I noticed bees buzzing around it going in and out! When I was feeding my cow's. I couldn't believe it! What a fun surprise. So I'll be a second year beekeeper with 3 hives instead of 2! Thanks again for your awesome content. I appreciate you.

Install my first package last Saturday. I removed the queen cage on the fifth day. I did a full install today on day seven. The bees have drawn comb on one and half frames, where the I had a beetle trap the comb was uneven. Have been feeding with one to one sugar water with the Burns additives. The bees are eating a quarter every two days. It’s been cool here in Indiana. I will inspect again in two weeks.

Awesome to see. Got the mud and 10 framed moved to new hives and have been not patiently waiting for the two week first inspection. Doing that tomorrow. Super mellow and super active queens. Thank you for your knowledge even though I feel like I’m lost doing this.

New Beekeeper here, started with 2 packages in early April, they are doing well. installed a Nuc on the 29th , checked it a week later, no eggs, brood has hatched, didn’t find the queen, some dead with heads on cells, think they starved and/or absconded…took a peak to check sugar syrup mid-week they hadn’t been feeding thru too feeder, dribbled some down on a couple frames, some came up to feed…found capped queen supersede cell on day 7 inspection…going to wait and see on this one since my other hives are going good.

I started a new hive from scratch last weekend Saturday. The weather was great when I put the package in the new hive. Then it got kinda cold, but warmed up for the last four days of the week. Today was high of 63-64 kind of breezy. I opened up that hive today. Queen was out, and was spotted. Actually tried to catch her to mark her, but she was definitely using all them legs to run around. Try again later. Had great new comb drawn out on 3 and a half frames. A lot of nectar, 4 inch diameter circle of pollen. Saw a lot of eggs some on less than half drawn out comb. The next 6-7 days will be High 80’s so. They will be even more active. So far they have been extremely gentle, but with really hot weather…. Everything here gets mad even me. Lol!

I just got my bees this morning and installed them. Both hives look happy and it's a beautiful day today. I'm a new bee keeper and am so looking forward to spending much time with my bees. I do have a question. How long should I wait before I start looking for pests?

David. I’m in Indiana and my new package really seems to like your liquid feed mix. I installed them on Monday afternoon and they used up about 34 oz as of Thursday evening. I’m going to do my first inspection on Sunday.

I just got a nuc a week go I couldn't find my queen but seen eggs, its been cold and raining so I haven't been able to get back in the hive to find and mark her. I've been feeding pollen patty and 1 to 1 sugar water, they have sucked down 4 -quart jars and bringing back a lot of pollen.

Hello! I installed my two packages on the same day as you did with this hive in northern Illinois, I have yet to do my initial inspection, or even check to make sure the queen was released and remove the cage. Do you recommend that I do this in the next day or am I better off waiting until the nicer weather come this Thursday? Around 11 or so days after install. The bees of an active the past two days and gathering pollen. As well as being top fed with a one to one ratio. Thanks!

    Good Video as always David.
I've got a video for you. What to do with half dead package off bee's. Haha.
I had two delivered last Friday. They where 80% dead! They where in the mail way to long almost 7 days. They where sent to Texas instead of Missouri.
One queen was alive and I managed to bring back about 2000-3000 bee's by spraying them with sugar water. I put them all in a 10 frame and I'm feeding them. I would have put them in a nuc however i dont have one available at this time. Hopefully they survive. The company is sending me two new packages. Any advice thank you. Im new to bee keeping and this is my first experience with bee's.

I inspected my hives today, but I can't figure out which one is the queen, but they are all out of their cages. It looked like there was "capped cells" on the 2 hives I installed a week and a half ago. The other one, I just installed a few days ago.

Installed my first of two nucs in the 10 frame "Pooh Hive" that you pictured on your Facebook page, just over a week ago and did my first inspection yesterday. Was feeding 1-1 syrup and they are doing great. Drew comb out on all but the outer two frames and the queen even filled one of my newly drawn frames with eggs. When do I consider adding a second deep and should I move any resources up when I do? Again no drawn comb on hand, all has to be drawn by the girls. EXCITING TIMES!!

Do you have to check your frames everytime it's been crazy weather here in iowa it's my first year the only nice day was last night I did open it and took a top view look they seem to be doing well and drawing comb but the next one I'm going to do a full frame inspection

  • @michaeldowd7807

So I didn't push the frames close together, and now the bees have built crazy comb. Should I do something about that or just leave it alone?

Hi, I overwintered my hives with 2 deeps, and now in the spring they are only interested in the top box. there is comb drawn out on all the frames but they aren’t laying brood or storing honey. What should I do?

Greetings from the varroa free subtropics of Australia (Jealous???). I'm a new beek and just read some articles on feeding bees caffeinated sugar water increasing forage to a specific plant as well as increasing the lifespan of bees (in small doses) I was wondering if this is in widespread use and how exactly do u mix the caffeinated sugar water (do you just throw a spoon of instant coffee into your sugar syrup???

    Hi Dave,
I'm in my 5th or 6th season of beekeeping. I learn something new every day.
I have a colony with a poor performing (slow egg laying) Queen. There are several capped superecedure Queen cells that are ready to emerge. Apparently the bees aren't happy with her performance either.
Question: When the first supercedure Queen emerges and kills the remaining unemerged Queens, who kills the existing Queen?
If the new Queen is defeated by the existing Queen the Colony would still have a poor performing queen.
    Thanks!

    • @beek
      @beek  Рік тому

What usually happens is that the bees will fire the old queen and groom one of the new virgins.
