Their lyrics are usually very cryptic and wacky. A lot of times the meaning can be really hard to find, so don’t feel bad about not totally understanding it. I love their music because of their sound and occasionally their lyrics can really hit the sweet spot for me.

Lovejoy is a very entertaining band, so you won't be disappointed with more of their stuff!
The meaning for their songs can be hard to grasp without outside help, so don't worry about feeling crazy about that. (I still don't know the meaning of this one, Wilbur's writing can be very cryptic as you'll come to find)
Their sound is mainly focused on being 2000s indie rock, with a heavy focus on bass and their double kick drums.
Wilbur (the writer and lead singer) has said that he likes music that's unpredictable, songs that catch you off-guard on the first listen, but sound normal every time you hear them afterwards, and you'll definitely notice that in Lovejoy's lyricism and instrumentation.
"Call Me What You Like" and "It's Golden Hour Somewhere" from this EP are also highly recommended, though any song you check out from them will give you something interesting no doubt.

Fun little tidbit: this music video in particular was produced by a director outside of the band named Ted Nivison. Hence why if you compare to the rest of the band's videos it has such a distinct / different feel to it.

I really enjoyed your reaction! Wilbur (the lead singer) has said that the song is about "the concept of society's relationship between sex and love. The constant grapple between what you want now and what you need forever"

"When I was asked to write this song to distract people from the recent disasters I thought, what better way to distract people than with the concept of society's relationship between sex and love. The constant grapple between what you want now and what you need forever." - Lovejoys words on the meaning behind Portrait Of A Blank Slate

The fact that you copied this quote completely out of the context surrounding it must be incredibly confusing to anyone who didn't see that twitter thread 💀

thanks for reacting to lovejoy, i would love to see you react to more of their songs!! will, the lead singer, has said their main inspirations have been bands like the arctic monkeys, the strokes, los camposinos, etc. i love every song that they’ve released but i would say their most recent ep ‘wake up & it’s over’ is their best (which has this song in)

I loved your reaction AND confusion, that's just perfect, you should totally listen to the whole EP. They are equally as good.
We lovenjoyer's thank you for reacting to this amazing band, and they are just starting :]

I really loved your reaction to this!! Another good song by them to check out is call me what you like, from their most recent ep (also has a music video). If you want to check out some of their older stuff, their first EP ‘are you alright’ is amazing, and ‘pebblebrain’ (particularly ‘the fall’) is also really good. Their style evolves after every ep they’ve released so I’m sure you’ll find it interesting! :)

I personally listen to this while drawing or planning a new story (Amateur writer) and it really helps me with getting into that tripy mind space. But I don't think it is a car song 😅 Call Me What You Like would be more like it

i’m pretty sure this song is about being a narcissist relationship. i’ve been listening to lovejoy since they came out with their first EP and they’ve been my favorite band ever since. in their songs they have a bit of a story line, about a girl ofc. in their first EP, Are You Alright, it’s about person a trying to figure out why person b is the way they are, and really hoping they’d just come around. in their second EP, pebblebrain, person a is becoming more spiteful of b’s irrational behavior, seen as person b has gotten them in useless relationships. then in their latest EP, Wake Up & It’s Over, which is the album portrait of a blank slate is on, is talking a bit more about that girl and more in depth. for example, it’s golden hour somewhere, explains how person b got themselves in a relationship where their new interest only cares about wealth and such. in the song consequences, there’s a certain line that says, “drink i’ve had too much to think, just tell me baby, is this seat taken now?” and proceeds onto the chorus. call me what you like is also very important to the whole story line of person a and b’s relationship (but do not fear, because wilbur had an interview with genius to explain the lyrics to that song, i recommend listening to the song then watching the meaning!) this EP follows a similar pattern as the others, it’s just a slight bit more poetic, seen as wilbur, the lead singer and co-guitarist (all i know is that he does the strumming LMFAO, that’s a joke btw) has taken a bit more control on most of the lyrics, which is why there’s so many big fancy smart words. he’s a poet lol. but in all seriousness, WU&IO is a mixture of dark and happy/hype vibes, where as Pebblebrain has dark lyrics but is more upbeat (being the happy/hype side of WU&IO) and Are You Alright being a darker EP (being the dark side of WU&IO). i recommend taking a look in their other two EP’s as well as the rest of WU&IO! i hope this helped! if you have any questions i’d be happy to answer em :)

The song is hard to understand since its full of metaphors but the lead singer has said that the song is about the consept of love and sex

Lovejoy, as ppl have said, tend towards very metophorical lyrics that I think are more supposed to invoke certain feelings and mental images than anything else? This song is, per the frontman William Gold, possibly somewhat facetiously, about the interplay between sex and love in our society, what you want right now vs what you need long term. The music video is legitimately not related in any way to the lyrics.

also the director of the music video made a video about making the music video (god that was a horribly convoluted sentence) which can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/Bs0uj_TesWw/v-deo.html

I think the point of this song is the fact that there is no meaning. It’s like spouting ideas onto a… blank slate!
