Throughout my childhood, we would visit my aunts in Baltimore. On the morning we would leave to travel back south, one of them would get up before dawn to fry us a big grocery bag of chicken, and give us a loaf of bread and sodas. She sometimes gave us cake or chips, as well. She would always say it was “so you won’t have to stop on the way home.” That always made me feel warm and loved, as though my mom’s big sister was taking care of us, by extending her hospitality to us even to our own doorstep. It was not until many years later that I realized that she had developed this practice to combat the brutally racist, segregationists who would have killed her family for something as simple as stopping for a plate of food, even when my mother was nearly a grownup. When I look back, I can see many seemingly fond memories from my childhood that were born out of the pain of rejection through the unjust laws of this country. It baffles me, how so many people can still say that we should just “get over it,” as though it was a small and insignificant part of our history, rather than an insidious and malignant period that encompasses the vast majority of this country’s history, and that continues to act as a blight on our potential to contribute to society, even today.
I grew up in the 90s and when we traveled my mom would always fry chicken, i believe she made devil eggs and brought water. I never thought too much about why she did it, but it's nice knowing this is truly black culture
My parents moved to the US in the early 1960's. I recall my dad being appalled how he, a non US citizen, was free to go where he wanted just because he was white. How he was able to go into a restaurant, sit at the counter, order his meal, yet US citizen black men had to shout their orders in through the door and wait outside for their meals in a to-go bag. His homeland had already dealt with this decades earlier with the British and religious discrimination and fought to get them out of Ireland. He couldn't believe discrimination of any kind was still going strong in the "modern" US in the 60s. :(
Damn this is bad. In our white family (from Romania and Norway), my mom used to cook fried chicken, and deviled eggs- she was an expert. It would never cross my mind that people would get crap at a rest stop, where we used to eat a lot of meals and snacks on trips in the 1950's and 60's. Sad. I hope all this discrimination will go away forever soon; this is supposed to be the home of the brave and the land of the free!!! I'm happy to see a lot of black people suing for their rights lately, and winning !!!
Come thru Central Texas. It's safe and you are welcome AND welcomed. I have lived as these good people describe long ago, and live well and happy today, as do my children. I personally apologize as a fellow American for any problem you may have had anywhere else from anyone else. May we make a better tomorrow.
Fel Ani True now. But the point is of the past- by which Austin was very dangerous for blacks passing through and not being on the segregated side of town.
Walter White Perhaps out of its major cities and Central Texas as a region but it's pretty unfair to label Texas that way. We could say the same thing for California in terms of policy.
Walter White Ah so you are a Californian. Well, actually in the 1970s the county, city, state, and federal tax expenditure act was passed aimed at minority neighborhoods to keep school district zones the same during integration (making it just segregation based on economics) in Santa Monica, Sacramento, Low Angeles, you name it. You see, while some parts of Texas during this time were being upfront and gradually accepting change California was more sneaky about it. Not to mention that your state elected a VERY Republican governor not too long ago. No state in the country is innocent. So I guess California falls under Shithole Status as well.
I’m not sure why these videos video always are suggested in my feed, but the comments never disappoint. The trolls are in here thick, please don’t feed them!!! 😂🤦🏾♀️
Missouri traveling highway get gas but that’s it, they Will escort You out of there, the boys in Smokey hat driving in that car you help pay for with your tax dollar.
So hold up... they'd stop on the side of the road, and piss in a bag with paper towels? Instead of finding a tree, like people have done for thousands of years. Yeah, sure.
It hasnt changed all that much. On our way to Florida with my kids one time, we got off the interstate in Atlanta and were not welcomed at several black businesses. I was looking for some gravol for motion sickness and had to continue to a 'white friendly' area to buy what was needed. To this day, I wont stop in an unfamiliar area.
My grandfather would cook meals on the engine block. So if my family packed their own food ( and still do ) for road trips I was oppressed? But I am white!

Same
l find their lack of bitterness and anger truly amazing.
I suppose it's ones reaction when that's normal life. I suspect that you'd see a similar reaction amongst people who lived under Mao for instance.
Stockholm syndrome
My momma still makes sure to pack us breakfast, lunch, and dinner on my road trips.

My mom is of the generation, this shat still happens too in certain parts of the US, it's disgusting being judged solely based on your skin color.

Boy the 1800s sound really bad. Wait, what this was the 1900s? But these people don’t look 100 years old. This isn’t history, this is recent.

Find a tree and risk getting arrested and put in jail on littering and indecent exposure charges? Yeah, you don't know. You must be white.
The police will arrest you for indecent exposure and littering. I know this for a fact.
2018. Live in the now!!!. Have you ever watched operah?

@@tamarathompson4539 You dipshit. That was true and had nothing to do with hate or racism on my part.

Andy M Its the fact that for these people it wasn't safe back then to even go to the store or a restaurant or even pump gas.
The difference between your experience and theirs is choice. You had it. They didn’t. And it defined their lives.
happy horses training don't bother explaining to him. There is nothing you can do to fix stupid.
