  • Dr. Lynn Weaver was part of a small group of black teens who integrated an all-white high school in Tennessee in 1964. He remembers what it was like to play on the school's football team - and the racism he faced on, and off, the field.

An extraordinary father raised extraordinary kids. Wow, what a story! I was so nervous about Dr. Weaver's dad getting hurt in that crowd of angry white folk. The power of what he now represents to all of us through the telling of this story is exponential. Good people, don't be quiet! Stand up against evil. RIP Dr. Weaver! Gratitude for all you did during your time on this earth and for sharing your father with us.

So true. Evil depends on good people being quiet.

But it also depends on idiots being loud, which is much easier to get.

This man's father is utterly amazing. He is how this world changes. Those who stand up for those they love and what is right. I'm glad this man shared his story.

Mob mentality in a nutshell. One judgmental person is all it takes for evil to take route. Want to keep evil at bay? don't let the mobs form.

This is what America was. For those who think that by removing everything we find to be racist and destroying them, then we're no different then the violent revolutionaries during the Communist revolution in Russia that tore down statues of famous figures. If we remove he history we don't like, then we are bound to make the same mistakes. No, I am not some "white racist misogynist", I'm simply a person that wants people to open their eyes and realize what they're actually doing is something horrific. The past will always be the past, and we can build a better future off those who made horrible mistakes in the past.

I'm assuming that your comment is based of the removing of confederate statues. I understand your viewpoint and don't think you're a racist, but the removal of those statues isn't about covering up history. These statues were erected to glorify these men, why would we want these up in public places. Imagine being a black person and going to the park and seeing a statue of a man who fought for the continued enslavement of your people. Even if we ignore the racial aspect, these men committed high treason against the United States, why would we want to honor them. Confederate statues serve a better purpose in museums than in parks. Think of Germany. Do they keep Nazi-era statues and other related stuff up in public spaces. No they do not, yet all Germans know their country's shameful past. You're right, it is important to remember our past, but there's a difference between remembering and honoring.

Basechad The Real One We don’t want to destroy them but they should be in museums, not in public to offend people. It will last much longer in a museum than in public

Most of the confederate memorials weren't erected back then--they were put up during the civil rights era. Going to have to say that I doubt it's just coincidence.
Public places that *everyone* pays for shouldn't have these things that honor and glorify these people who fought to keep people enslaved. I don't know about you but, history or not, I wouldn't want my money going to fund it.
We can have them on display in museums and things dedicated to the civil war--but they shouldn't just have these things in public parks or the state capitols. If we had put up statues of Hitler (he was time magazines man of the year, one year) we'd want his statues taken down as well.
So far, Germany has zero statues of Hitler and, I'd wager, they all know about him and their history. There's a huge difference between choosing to not glorify certain parts of our history and actively trying to erase it. The civil war should, absolutely, be taught and not kicked under the rug--but we shouldn't glorify the confederacy.
