    Josh stated very clearly that the 5th finger is used on all Cs and Fs. Fingers 3 and 4 are used on all other keys that are in between those Cs and Fs. This is a wonderful and helpful exercise. Thank you so very much for sharing this. It is so very helpful and you have made it very, very clear what finger should be used on each key. I am so grateful for all of your videos. Keep in mind, EVERYONE, that you play every note, chromatically. So, if you are using 5 on Cs and Fs, the other keys are all played with fingers 3 and 4 in a logical way. To spell out 1 OCTAVE OF FINGERING ASCENDING from middle-C: C-5, C#-3, D-4, D#-3, E-4, F-5, F#-3, G-4,G#-3, A-4, A#-3, B-4, C-5 This is the fingering you should be using in your right hand for multiple octaves, slowly increasing speed, but starting very slowly.

    You are the most wonderful instructor. I'm a retired old man -- who started learning piano when I was about eight but, then due to my dad's alcohol -- my music life went to hell. My mother was my first instructor and she was concert trained as well as she could do the Italian high note singing. She was also trained in violin and viola....RIP....and she was a wonderful woman. Because my dad's little penis syndrome -- he really suppressed her life and her skill sets as well as us eight children. You remind me of her in the way you explain things right down to the human experience of what the body goes through in the chosen art that has been chosen...."Piano". Bless you and the air that you breath. Thanks.

    Great advice ! The first exercise is of course the same fingering as the upper notes of the double thirds scale used in the Etude. You can extend it by adding the descending part, which is fingered like this (from C downwards): 543 54 54 543 54. I am finding your tutorials very useful, particularly the advice about keeping the fingers close to the keys in rapid passagework. Best wishes, Paul

    • @JD-qd5zp

      @PaulEhite743 - I prefer to work both hands equally and use the same fingerings in both hands in contrary with the RH starting on C and the LH starting on E with the RH going up and the LH going down.
      I like this because it develops both of my hands equally.

    Josh, thank you for your very helpful suggestions. I have always found the Chopin op.10 no. 2 the BEST exercise to strengthen my right hand, which I need since I am left handed. One thing I have found helpful is to play the melody with the three smaller fingers while bringing the other fingers that play the chords to the keyboard in their right positions but without playing them. In this way the hand has to take the sometimes awkward positions it needs to while I can hear and concentrate on a good legato of the melody.

    Hi there I really enjoy your videos. I am a pianist and teacher and would like to know your thoughts on two areas. Firstly, what are some ways to really learn and memorise a piece so that it sticks in long-term memory (and also that you can play it under pressure). And secondly, how and what exercises and scales and pieces should I do (and techniques) to get my ability to a more professional/master level?

    Hey, Josh, thank you for sharing this exercise! what would the corresponding exercises for the left hand be? would it be the same 345 or would you use 123? For the second exercise, would it be 12 also or 45? Thank you! :)

    • @J-Dog
      @J-Dog 7 років тому +1

      There's no reason you can't practice both exercises up and down. :) And since you can go both up and down, you might as well make them identical. So if you were going to use C and F for the right hand, then use B and E for the left hand. You'll notice that makes the ascent of the right identical to the descent of the left, and then the descent of the right identical to the ascent of the left. That's for the 345 exercise. For the 12 exercise, starting the left hand on E is equivalent to starting the right hand on C.
      Chromatic scales are quite symmetrical. If you start with each hand a D note and move your hands apart playing each chromatic note, you'll notice the shape of the keyboard (white and black notes) is the exact same for each hand.

I'm a little uneasy around Bach for example although with practice I do fine. I'm starting a difficult piece soon with left had dominance (right hand supporting-- main melodies on the left); what type of exercises do you advise me to do to strengthen the left had?

    • @jdbrown371
      @jdbrown371 7 років тому

      Go down too. Don't be surprised if going down is harder (or easier). It isn't necessary to keep the same tempo ascending and descending. You should work on ascending and descending separately. Later practice ascending 1 octave followed by 1 octave descending, slowly at first. Then 2 octaves, then 3... Also, start at the top play the scale descending then ascending. Try triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets (hard), sextuplets. You get the idea.

    • @pablosorbara2280

      Yes, but instead of using 5 on Cs and Fs you will have to use 5 on Es and Bs as to respect the mirror image on the piano. You can also play both at the same time, contrary motion, starting on D or Ab, that way you make sure both your right and left hand end up on the same color and the same finger.
