- This video showcases the South African Union quarter penny minted from 1923 to 1960. It is one of the smallest South African coins. It features two Cape Sparrows to remember the women and children that faced inhuman conditions in concentration camps during the Anglo Boer War.

just watched this, excellent again, starting to get interested in your coinage, In Ireland after independence 1st issue for a farthing was in 1928 last issue was in 1966, I was ten then and never saw one in actual circulation. Our farthing had a woodcock on the reverse
I note when you went decimal you went 1 Rand = 10/-, same as Australia 1 Dollar = 10/- more sensible than what we did, we stayed with the Pound but went 240d = 100 new pence kept the 1/- and 2/- and minted 5 new pence and 10 new pence of the same design and weight.
The UK coinage circulated in Ireland until we introduced our own coinage in 1928 then they circulated together. For the exact reasons you state@ 6.27 the UK also issued dark farthings until 1918 to avoid confusion with gold issue.
Peter, thank you for your interest and kind words. I grew up with the 2nd decimal series (Nickel series) - 1965 to 1989.. Oddly, I fell in love with the union coins though. In my research I discovered that decimalisation and the concept of "the Rand" was already conceived as early as 1925! All driven by abandoning the gold standard (but that's another video!) of course.
I started this channel to "force" myself to do more research on Numismatics. It's turning out very enjoyable. Thank you again.
@@penniesshillings I'm not certain of all of this but I believe that Charlemagne of the 'Holy Roman Empire' introduced the concept of £. S. d. the concept was that 240 was a composite number, and the 1st composite number that could be divided by 20 other numbers without the need for fractions. 100 can only be divided by 7 numbers. This system was used across Europe including Spain and France. Napoleon introduced decimalisation in France moving form a currency based on £ivre sous & sol to Francs and centimes.
In the UK income tax was introduced as a temporary to fund the Boar war, and bank notes(promissory notes, I promise to pay the bearer One pound Sterling on demand) started to replace the gold standard.
Here in Ireland, as we had no gold reserves as such, the bank notes stated on the bottom for example" One pound sterling, payable to the bearer on demand in London" This was a clever piece of legislation, it was not a Sterling note as such and could not be spent outside of Ireland, but could be exchanged for a Bank of England note at the offices of the 'Consolidated Currency Commission in London'
Glad your enjoying your research.
I have a 1967 suid- Afrika coin
Hi I just want to know is the 1943 and the 1953 coins worth something...
Hi Theo, you're welcome to ask. I assume you're referring to 1943/1953 farthings? 9.9million 1943 1/4Ds were minted. A graded mint state coin (MS63) sold for R200 recently (it cost more to grade than it's worth). 7.1million minted 1953 1/4Ds were minted with similar values. So, sadly, not that much.
my favorite South African coin.
Mine too.
