Neil DeGrasse Tyson: None of this makes sense, but this is beautiful art. Eric Weinstein: Neil doesn't understand any of this. He just dismissed Terry and said "nice shapes." I won't do that, I'll give Terry the time of day. Also Eric Weinstein: So anyway, all of this is bullshit but they are pretty shapes.
This kind of narrative is plaguing European region too and yet somehow we don't have a science communicator and/or debunker of this magnitude and style. So I decided to support Dave as Patreon, hoping to help to make the channel even stronger and because of it, just maybe, to see a spill-over of his style onto "my" continent. Btw. I hashtaged Dave's channel in one of the comments in Piers video and mentioned that Dave reacted. ;) Let's see what happens!
Fellow European here. Totally agree with you. Wonder if the Kurzgesagt guy could fill that gap... But then again... It takes time away from communicating actual science to curious minds, which is sad too. But what's even sadder is that we might get to a point where debunking shit is even more important than simply educating because it's becoming so much... Thanks for that, Joe "I'm just an idiot, so don't listen to me" Rogan.
@@ChomageRider I understand what you say, but I think I would prefer that Kurtzgesat keeps doing what is actually doing, it's amazing, and leave the debunking to people like SciManDan and the like. And for science commmunicators I would think they have a few ones, I know a few goods ones from Spain like QuantumFracture, Simon Clark is from the UK I think. There's a glimmer of hope I think.
I think they were hoping for a name which had followers but didn't necessarily command enough respect for viewers to outright agree with. Then they must have realized Dave does not play their Kumbaya and would not have let any of them slide with foolery. Someone like Dave will bring the perspective that there is no reason that debate should be taking place at all, because everyone else there are charlatans. Instead of "hey that's an interesting take, we should investigate it more" it would be "wow that is the most insane thing you could say, cut it out".

I thought he was super uncharitable to the one guy who went on Joe Rogan when I watched his reaction to the Joe Rogan video. Now I see I was lacking context on the kind of person this guy is, and that's why he seemed so uncharitable. This guy genuinely is a quack.
I see where you were originally coming from. These people are grifters and charlatans. Especially narcissistic, thin-skinned, hyper-cringe fuckwits like Eric Weinstein.
I’ve seen and heard a lot from Prof Dave and he hits back really hard on charlatans and grifters because these people prey on the poorly educated, which, you have to admit is sad. He has no problem calling these charlatans liars, cheats, idiots, scum, etc. I have to admit that I found him really harsh the first time I saw him debate the world’s “top” flat earthier. But now I appreciate everything Prof Dave does for science and science education. He is unapologetically brash. And I say, “ Go for it!” These idiots need to be called out. It’s too bad that more media didn’t call out Trump and all his BS in 2015, but they became addicted to the ratings, and probably never thought he’d actually win the Republican nomination, let alone become leader of the free world. Goes to show, you have to be careful with these scammers and liars. Can you imagine how many deaths Candice Owens will cause if a large number of people stop getting their kids vaccinated? We will be back to medieval times with child death rates through the roof.
He is very charitable, kind and understanding to those who deserve it. If you watch him go on shows like those on The Line, you'll see he isn't like this to everyone.

Dave, as a television producer, I can make a pretty accurate guess as to why you were suddenly “uninvited.” It seems they didn’t do sufficient due diligence before reaching out to you. Typically, they message dozens of people and then narrow it down. After you agreed, they likely did a deep dive and realized how you would be in calling people out on their BS which wouldn’t fit with their narrative. Not to mention, it might lose them, future guests. I’m guessing Eric’s agent or representative found out. Since Eric is trending right now, they probably didn’t want to stir things up. From a viewership standpoint, having Eric on would draw more eyeballs. Television is never about the truth; it’s always about the most entertainment. Personally, I love your stuff and think it would have been awesome to see you up there, calling him out on his bullshit.
I second this, especially after seeing the rest of the fellas that appeared on the show and the whole "uncensored" thingy going on, with latter being peak irony in this side of the globe given that this Piers What-His-Face works on TV show of pretty damn big corporation.

It's obvious that Dave doesn't fit there. He wouldn't be allowed to throw insults nor disrespect other panelists, so why have him on? I don't think this is lost on Dave, since the focus of his channel has pivoted in that direction and he goes out of his way to drop as many insults as the pace of his videos will allow. The problem with that attitude, as you pointed out, is that he'll have a hard time moving past YT and social media (if that's something he'd like to do)

Best bet is that he is an actor and being used for dismissing the idea of questioning conspiracy theories. Overdoing it on purpose in other words. Many actors have to spew politics so this would kind of align or he went too far down the rabbit hole but I’m fairly certain he’s not ignorant.
It isn't a science. A science is when you can replicate theories in a lab to prove them true to make laws. That's why there are scientists who spend their careers just replicating experiments to see if they generate the same results. You cannot do this with medicine or medical theory. For example some medical practices work for groups of people but not all. Some smokers never have any health issues. No vaccines are 100% effective. That's all he was stating. That, along with the hubris of the scientific community has fostered conspiracy theories that makes it so people don't trust science anymore. He stated that Howard was fundamentally wrong in all aspects of math and science but that he may have ignorantly stumbled upon an idea that MIGHT have applications in drone engineering or art, and even questioned if they were his own ideas at all. He was just polite about it, noting that many 'hobbyists' have actually made contributions to real science and that people should never be discouraged from attempting things on their own or ridiculed because they are self-taught.

This is personal taste and I am 10 minutes in the video. I am fed up with this kind of content and those criminals (scammers and con artists like Weinstein). I hope Dave will switch to something more fruitful, than debunking those nuts in the future. I really can't care less about this circle-wanking: Creeps like Weinstein make money out of the gullible and produces his attention-seeking via other corrupt figures like this "tv-speaker" and then Dave has his views (with his important work of science communication[1]), which brings more attention to the scammers. I prefer to give such criminals NO PLATFORM. I'm done with such people and the content addressing them. We are in 2024! If people in the western world chose to believe in flat earth, Jebus, mystical numbers or other nonsense, they can. They are adults and contrary to some opinions, these guys know exactly what they do and how and why they give up their factual based decision making and instead believe some charlatans. It is their decision! Well, based on bad assumptions and further decision in their life will be also bad and will harm them. Which is what THEY chose und what they deserve. It is actually anti-democratic to inform those nuts more than once about what nonsense they are doing ... or even try to force them to "be normal". We cannot and we should not safe all people. We have first responders, hospitals, psychiatric institutions, public schools and so on ... That is enough. We can and should not babysit all "Erich von Däniken's" of the world and their followers. Just ignore those absolutely stoopid fellow hooomans and let them live their (obviously on average remarkably shortened) lifespan. That is the path they chose. If they act criminal and harmful ... we have the institutions, too. [1] Science Communication is important. But in the context of debunking nonsense ... It is getting old, boring, unbearable and really erases some important aspect of science: fascination. The permanent **FACEPALMING* during such content like this, PHYSICALLY drives out any fun, curiosity and enthusiasm of any human brain. Yeah it sounds like they just decided against having him on as a guest. They send the “media van” out to people in the LA area _all the time,_ and it’s a very professional operation. They’re not gonna have somebody call in sick the morning of, and be like “oops, I guess we can’t do it today.” This is in Los Angeles; if there’s any place where you can get replacement crew or equipment on short notice, it’s there. I’m guessing the other guy just had more industry pull, and was able to reach out to the Piers producers and get himself the spot at the last minute. Or else someone [I wonder who] just didn’t want him there. Either way, Dave would have been a much better guest.
Dave could have added a lot of clarity by cutting through the bs of this 'pier' review. Instead we have to suffer Weinstein, who holds being polite as more important to the scientific community than being correct apparently. Ughhh I swear, some people just love grifters. Society seems to boost them, no matter how fraudulent, unfounded, or ridiculous. It makes my head spin.
Dave, when you made the shift to include this type of content, I wasn't sold. My emotional reaction was that of course there are dumb people in the world, and I don't need to pay any attention because I'm not enough of a sucker to fall for the obvious cons like electric universe or young earth. I use the channel to assist me in seeking to further my understanding of as much as I can, as best as I can, and I didn't like that when I viewed the new stuff the shift in content made me feel like I was being both patronized a bit and also expected to join in on some good ol' public point and laugh shaming. I was wrong. I needed to have it shoved in my face exactly just how much noise this post-truth moment in our history is producing, and just how far through humanity that the moment has penetrated. I needed to have it pointed out again and again, till the point of numbness to it, and again and again further, till that numbness transitioned to shock, then faded to incredulity. I took the time to have a few careful conversations with people in my life and discovered that even among my close family and friends there are those who have started to fall for the amplified false consensus that science is dogmatic. These are generationally challenging times, and I'm not certain that the wanna-be aristocracy isn't winning. I now watch every single one of these videos I can, both so that I can reccommend them to the people who need to see them, but also to remind myself just how extremely far the pendulum is trying to swing. This is a fight worth fighting. Thanks for showing me that, Dave. I'll keep fighting with you, in my tiny and mostly insignificant way. Perhaps all of our insignificant actions together can defeat the forces that wish to keep us that way.
It is unbelievable that this is being seriously discussed...400 years ago, some of this nonsense would have been acceptable to discuss...but to take such nonsense seriously in the 21st century is absolute ridiculous.
Because people who are nowhere near as smart as they think they are like your Terence Howards and Candace Owens build huge followings of morons and it floods youtube..Luckily "real science" continues unabated and simply doesn't stop for malcontents and phonies.
At first i thought it was only being put in the news as a laughing stock for people but then as he was given more and more attention I realised it was being presented as an actual “discovery” or something. By presenting nonsense like this as genuine science or maths is just a sign of how broken and backwards society has become. The only reason I can think of that he was given time on tv etc is because of his race. Some executive probably didn’t want to say no out of fear of looking racist.
@@creon3866 This is not a sign that society is broken and backwards...such nonsense has existed all the times...and every now and then such absurd ideas are 'discussed' in some parts of society...but through some media and social media, this nonsense gains a wider reach...but it is picked up by exactly those people who believe in this stuff (or similiar nonsense like channeling, fortune telling, just all the esoteric nonsense) anyway...in every country, a certain percentage of the population is vulnerable to these things...this will, of course, vary from country to country, but fundamentally nothing is likely to change that...there is also a psychological component here...the world has become so incredibly complex, our knowledge so incredibly divers, that it is almost impossible for an individual to be informed correctly about everything...I sometimes feel a deep helplessness when I realize how absolutely little I actually know...for some people, this 'helplessness' may begin sooner and they look for ways to explain this infinitely complicated and complex world more easily...and they are very susceptible to the ideas of those blockheads that this video is about...and as long there is a countermovement against this nonsens, I am not that worried...yet.
This hadn't been an acceptable discussion since our forebears first found out about multiplication. Even a Mesopotamian beggar from 7 ka ago would laugh at this "discussion".
A little off topic, but i finally got a co worker to no longer believe the Earth is flat. He kicked and screamed along the way, and even hated my guts for a bit... but we got him there together.
I told him that day and night cycles make a lot more sense with the sun on one side of the earth vs the sun being directly above it. (I used the Netflix series of Storybots to explain it very simply). I told him how most of the rays of the sun hit the middle of the earth, making seasons and weather in some countries different than other countries. And the flat earth model just doesn't explain this without using many leaps in logic. Then I showed him how he delegitmized scientists when when they spoke in favor of a round earth, but then credited them when flat earthers twisted thier words to seem like they spoke in favor of a flat earth. I also used the Netflix feature that showed the flat earther "scientists" do an experiment to disprove the round earth model, but then end up proving it is round. I can't remember the name of the documentary, but they used some expensive device. I used a flight app to show him planes do fly in certain parts of the world he said were impossible. I told him about flat earth being a community, where people can bond over a shared ideology vs an actual science. It was a long process, it didn't happen over night. I didn't badger him about it everyday. I would let him bring it up, or I would bring it up in a way to let him think it was his idea to talk about it. Sometimes I would talk about it with him only once a week, or two. If it started to get heated, I'd leave the conversation with a stinging rebuttal, before letting him have the last word. Pretty sure I used Prof Dave's arguments as well, from a previous video or two. But things like Storybots were very helpful as well. I stripped the entire idea of flat earth from him, bit by bit, until he himself had to admit his ideas no longer had an logical merit. At the end of it, he begrudgingly had to admit the earth is round. I was super proud of him!
Good job. The flat earth day and night model where sunlight just arbitrarily stops halfway across a dinner plate Earth makes no sense to me, and I'm not a scientist. Earth must be a sphere that rotates in order for day and night to make sense.
That's aweomse to hear, it's stuff like that no matter how minor that gives me hope in the rationality of our society. I guess Weinstein vetoed Dave's appearance. Because Weinstein doesn't want to be criticized and fact-checked. Piers doesn't give an F about Howard except how many views he can deliver to Piers' show. Piers would even love it if Dave argued with Weinstein because controversial arguments make good ratings. But he wouldn't want to hurt poor Weinstein's fragile ego because a lot of Weinstein's audience is his audience, and he wants to skim off of Weinstein's audience of science deniers.
The strange selective "skepticism" of these kinds of people has always confused me. They will correctly criticize the ulterior motives of the giant pharmaceutical industry as being driven by profit, but for some reason don't realize that whatever alternative medicine they promote, be it homeopathy, crystal healing, etc are driven by these same exact motives. Be skeptical of all authorities, not just the ones you don't like!
I always say "We agree, great. Let's nationalize all big industries, then" and they always quiet down. I have no problem taking the profit incentive out of critical infrastructure, don't test me
It’s not skepticism at all. They have that “skepticism” because they stand to financially benefit from people losing trust in institutions. Hence why anti vax Bret Weinstein just so happened to be offering a vax alternative
And being skeptical doesn't mean automatic distrust of everything authorities say. Governments and science have methods of self-correction (news agencies and peer review) so you can most likely trust them. Just verify the info is correct.

I swear, the Dunning-Kruger effect is one of the most misunderstood and frequently misapplied concepts in the history of science. Ironically, one of the best demonstrations of the Dunning-Kruger effect is people who think they understand the Dunning-Kruger effect and try to use it as an argument: they know a little bit about the general idea and suddenly think they are experts on the subject.
Yeah but an HONEST definition of dunning kroger [sic] would indicate EVERYONE has it to some degree BUT MOST people have a functioning self-analysis capability so they question THEMSELVES before the effect becomes pronounced... Eric saying Neil deGrasse has a peer-review problem is just grinding his own anti-establishment axe for the anti-establishment conspiracy types,, so if ANYONE in that circle is suffering from dunning kreuger IT'S ERIC...
I read that whole comment expecting you to specify what they got wrong or elaborate on what it actually means beyond the basic understanding everybody has.
I disagree. It's a fairly simple concept, and in an era of wide information availability but shallow understanding, it's the perfect descriptor for many people -- like those who read a Wikipedia article and think they understand a topic as well as those who have been studying it for years. It is used frequently but appropriately so, IMHO.
Those who know, know that the REAL Dunning-Krüger effect was merely lower-performing people somewhat overestimating their abilities and higher-performing people somewhat underestimating their abilities, forming a flatter line than you'd expect, on the "predicted grade versus actual grade" graph

Acting like scientists present themselves as infallible is such obvious BS if you've ever spoken to a scientist in your life. Eric thinks this because he presented his theory, they all said it was garbage, and he as the smartest man alive couldn't take that. But to anyone who has spoken to a scientist, they're keenly aware of what we don't know, and they're very happy to say what we are probably wrong on - that's their job. It's like saying building inspectors pretend that buildings are unbreakable and never talk about where maintenance needs to be done - it's just nonsense on its face.
👏👏👏👏Totally. The strawmans are relentless and absurd and the only reason why the Weinsteins have taken this anti intellectual trajectory is because they couldn't hack it in academia. The idea that Eric is the smartest man alive is freaking ridiculous.
Excellent comment. In fact, intelligent people have been shown to be less confident in their knowledge than the average person. Most people are average, which is fine, but they refuse to admit when they’re wrong and their hubris is out of control. Scientists are precisely aware of their expertise and what isn’t. No man can be master of more than one small corner of knowledge and to be able to say “I don’t know is” is something that should be celebrated.
@@Purpleturtlehurtler LOL! Well luckily you seem like the type who loves to learn. I think that’s one commonality all humans can relate to and share. The truly sad part. Professor Dave is just factually correct. We are heading down a very sad, sad future if things do not change.
You're wrong about one thing Professor Dave. You say your going to go into more detail about Weinstein than we want to hear.
I assure you I want to hear EVERY freaking detail about this charlatan. Your video could be three hours long and I will watch every second.
Keep up the great work.
Weinstein strikes me as like that one guy who is obsessed with or gone down the rabbit hole of Toroid-Vortex-Voxel math and thinks it is some kind of underpinning of the universe. Can't remember his name, white guy with very respectable credentials, degree in math from Berkeley IIRC but batty like Michio Kaku.
Yeah, I thought he was a brilliant man to come on the show and debate Terrence, but then I’ve learned a little bit about his background. He is pretty iffy.
I don't particularly care if eric winestine is this or that, but keep in mind that it is very easy for a trained scientist to mistake an autodidact for a charlatan.
again, I don't care either way, but it's important to keep an eye out for signs that outr guys are mistaking evidence of formal education as a hallmark of expertise; in others or in themselves.
You have to be a billy goat or you have to have the anatomy of a ram brain to digest such unbearably stupid babble over and over and over again.

Hey, Dave! Please don’t stop doing what you’re doing. We need you!

Yeah it has sorta taken a chunk outta my faith in humanity. That Piers video's comment section is a legit cognitohazard, avoid it at all costs.
Legitimately impressive
How did you pull off such a feat?

@@tedmich Exactly my point, actual skepticism reveals this.

Yeah but an HONEST definition of dunning kroger [sic] would indicate EVERYONE has it to some degree BUT MOST people have a functioning self-analysis capability so they question THEMSELVES before the effect becomes pronounced... I disagree. It's a fairly simple concept, and in an era of wide information availability but shallow understanding, it's the perfect descriptor for many people -- like those who read a Wikipedia article and think they understand a topic as well as those who have been studying it for years. It is used frequently but appropriately so, IMHO.

Excellent comment. In fact, intelligent people have been shown to be less confident in their knowledge than the average person. Most people are average, which is fine, but they refuse to admit when they’re wrong and their hubris is out of control. Scientists are precisely aware of their expertise and what isn’t. He is doing an incredible disservice to humanity given the amount of views he has on his podcast.
Give us the reasons why you hate that idiot. I want a good laugh. 😂
Joe Rogan and Piers Morgan, seems they profit from stirring the pot.
We all have to make money, earn a living.
But they are rich enough to back off and be serious reporters and make a difference by being factual.
That they choose not to, maybe does deserve some hate
I am not a scientist; I am a historian. For the past several months, I have been studying Sir Isaac Newton. No one ever got more peer reviews than Isaac. They didn't call them "peer reviews," but they happened. A 1680s peer review could be vicious. All serious academic work has always been reviewed by other experts in the field, be it science or the arts.
TIL "can't get a crew out there" means "we didn't want you, we wanted plausible deniability."
It means Eric refused to share the panel with a legitimate charlatan buster.
@@ubahfly5409 100% that's what it was. Dave says something about one or both of the two other scientists being in Weinstein's pocket. They were certainly too nice to him. For me the takeaway is _Weinstein encourages Howard's pants-shitting stupidity._ That is unforgivable because now it looks like an accredited scientist agrees with Howard. At the end of the day, Howard is just a narcissistic idiot smearing poo-poo on the walls of social media. Weinstein is much worse because he knows better and goes along anyway. I think he'd be supportive to flat-Earthers if it gave him a platform to bloviate about how "corrupt" the system is since his peers rejected his big hypothesis.
There are certainly things I don't agree with you about, Professor Dave, but you're a top shelf educator and one hell of a communicator. I can't tell you what I'd give to see you debate people more. I know people give you tons of shit about being rude, but I doubt those people understand what it's like to deal with science denial day in and day out when you're just trying to do your job.. Keep up the great work, brother. I look forward to more of your debates in the future. You are appreciated.
In the 18th century an alchemist named James Price claimed to have successfully converted lead to gold. His peers called him out on his bullshit and demanded a demonstration. It did not end well. Peer review!
The comment about peer review compared to professional sports tryouts was perfect. I am totally stealing this for future conversations. Thank you!
The only way to challenge "the science" is to do science. It's just denial, pure and simple.
These people are against the scientific method itself, they just want to believe whatever they want.
Don't give up buddy! As a new viewer of yours you've helped clarify a ton of things for me recently.
how can people sit there and say terryology is real when we literally went to the moon with normal math 😭
i'm sure the people who believe in terryology don't think we landed on the moon

Terrence does NOT make "pointless shapes", Dave! In fact they look quite pointy and probably constitute a safety hazard.
Good point! 😄

It’s so refreshing to hear Dave tell it how it is without pulling punches
A mix of various ways of communicating information is good. Dave definitely fills a much-needed role.
Can’t be the only one who got put in their place with this one. Thank you.
Love to hear that Dave will be here for “quite a long while” continuing this absolutely necessary work
This whole fucking situation is so absurd. I'm dying inside.
Trump will probably appoint him to be the head of education in USA.
Hang on in Kyle. Things are really tough but there's lots of us feel the same ... and I have a hope and belief that the next generation will be able to do better.

The last ten minute rant of yours is one of the most succinct, eloquent, expansive accurate depictions of America's political climate I've heard .
Finally someone acknowledges this.
I loved it. Dave is wrong about not voting Democrat though. It's the only way to avoid fascist rule at this point and at least for the time being. We should always seek to keep the GOP out of power any way we can.
@@LukeMcGuireoides yeah, the GoP jumped the shark when they embraced neoliberalism during the reagan/thatcher years. they were actively destructive after that.
@LukeMcGuireoides
"...any way we can....."
THAT, in and of itself, would be FASCIST! Right?
@@jacobeller that's not fascism. That's a description of voting. Even if you take me literally, it would be a revolt, not fascism.
You know what Dave, I always thought you were a bit too harsh and unnecessarily rude but since watching this video I think it's probably for the best. Keep it up.
As someone who grew up in the 60s and 70s, and who is also passionate about science, I am deeply disturbed by what we're seeing nowadays. Back then, I imagined that the world of the 2000s would be much more enlightened, scientifically literate, and thankful to science for whatever new discoveries the 2000s would bring. Instead, widespread anti-intellectualism and a disdain for science/medicine threatens to send us back to dark times. That is why I am so thankful for Professor Dave's efforts to combat all the bullshit in the world. Keep up the good work, Dave!!
I'm surprised Terrrence Howard wasn't invited to speak at the RNC in Milwaukee.
Eric is insufferable.
I'm sure he's fine at Math. I find him hopelessly uninteresting and opportunistic.
god the way he uses analogies and just communicates his point or whatever, or acts like some resident expert or go to guy infuriates me
@@wesley6442 exactly!
Just thank you for existing Dave.
You perfectly voice how I feel, as a medical student it’s disheartening seeing people peddle distrust for facts and methods of finding the objective truth
That genius Weinstein whined to Morgan and had you kicked. He wasn’t prepared to weather that heat.
I accept this uncritically, like Terrance Howard with any conspiracy theory.
Bingo
'It's an engineering art'
You missed the 'F'.
I like your comment because it reminded me of seeing actual art in a building one time that I swear to you, no joke looked like a pair of twisted testicles xD which is fitting given the nut job that is terrence
You say Trump's re-election is a foregone conclusion? It isn't. 2024 is not the election-year to give up on democracy. (If you live in a swing state, I would call that unforgiveable.) Being Norwegian, I can't vote in November, but I urge all good Americans to do their bit to stop Trump and rally around the Democratic candidates, however flawed they may be. The world counts on you!
To be fair, this was posted the day before Biden dropped out of the race. Before then (even though plenty of us knew he was probably dropping out at that point) things were looking pretty bleak.
Explain why you're urging to stop trump, provide actual reasons?
@@MafiZedI think Dave gave more than enough reasons in the video.

@@SvenElven have you got your name confused or are you speaking on behalf of the guy I'm speaking to?
It's really sad and pathetic I have to live in a world that denies science and/or politicizes it. Like this seriously feels like 1700s where being interested in science was considered extremist.
The good news is, I think most people are at least "towards" the sane side of the spectrum when it comes to understanding science. Most people have never even heard of Terrance
It's honestly a dangerous stupidity.. these fools can vote, I can't tell you how many people I have met that believed the weirdest shit it honestly made me want to seek safety because I was scared to be around them

At least you turn out wealthy idiots whereas ours just churns out plain old idiots!
On behalf of the United States, we will forgive you if you forgive us for our dogshit political system
@yanwain9454 in the UK we call private school Public school, no idea why?
Because they accept students from anywhere (provided they can pay). Not just the local area as is the case with state schools.
@@jackwalker5828I thought it might have come from a time when only the wealthy would attend school and would then be part of public life, whereas the poor would stay on the farms, going back to early modern history and I could be mistaken.
