- Doordarshan brings to you the stories from the legendary Hindi writer and the jewel in the crown of Hindi literature - Munshi Premchand.
This series directed by none other than Gulzar will leave you asking for more. The first 12 episodes in the series "Tehreer..." are form the most famous novel penned by the master storyteller - Godaan.
It was first published in 1936 and is considered one of the greatest Hindustani novels of modern Indian literature. Themed around the socio-economic deprivation as well as the exploitation of the village poor, the novel was the last complete novel of Premchand. The story revolves around many characters representing the various sections of Indian community. The peasant and rural society is represented by the family of Hori mahato and his family members which includes Dhania, Rupa and Sona(Daughters), Gobar(son), Jhunia( daughter in law). The Story starts from a point where Hori has a deep desire of having a cow as other millions of poor peasants.

मैंने 2012 में बारहवीं कक्षा में था और पहली बार गोदान पुस्तक पढ़ा। उसके बाद प्रेमचंद की सभी कहानियां एक एक करके पढ़ लिया.... कई सारे उपन्यास भी पढ़ लिए.....इन कहानियों को पढ़के मैं अपने गांव में खो जाता हूं....
यही सब तो भारत के अनमोल रत्न है जिसे आजकल की पीढ़ी खोती जा रही है....
आजकल दिनभर मोबाइल में सोशल मीडिया में खोए रहने में इतना नशा नहीं है जितना प्रेमचंद की कहानियों में था....

मुंशी प्रेमचंद की कहानियों, उपन्यास में ग्रामीण जीवन का जीता जागता चित्रण लाजवाब रहता है। समाज मे व्याप्त असमानता को लेकर लिखते थे। बहुत खूब लिखते थे। आज ययुग बदला है अब जमीदार मजदूर से काम कराने कितना मिन्नते करता है ? दशा उलट गया है। इतिहास बदलता है।
What a masterpiece by Munshi Prem Chand ? If he is called Shakespeare of India, it is quite true. He has portrayed the contemporary life of villages and society. The pathetic conditions of the villagers and their exploitation made my eyes full of tears. The roles of Sh Pankaj Kapoor and the lady who played the role of Dhania, have embodied the characters they were playing.
While I understand your sentiment in referring Shree Munshi Prem Chand Ji as “Shakespeare of India” (which is a fairly known way of referring him), with due respect, I disagree with the reference; somehow it gives an impression that Shakespeare is the gold standard here and Shree Munshi Prem Chand Ji is the one who was able to achieve it in the Indian context. In my humble opinion, such a comparisons in not justified. Not discounting Shakespeare’s brilliance but Shree Munshi Prem Chand Ji is beyond comparison in his writing talents and is “Munshi Prem Chand” of India. That in itself, should suffice.

Godaan is a great work of literature. It is not to read but to feel. Gulzaar Saahib Tehreer (which means literary composition) is actually a service to mankind where he brings alive a great book on film, in a time when we have very little literature in films. The Protagonist Hori played by Pankaj Kapur is perfect. Loved it !
This is something which is keeping me alive....even if i have a long life and if i stay alive till i turn 80...this is something, which will be always a beauty in my life...my 90's years...my village...my old big fat tv...my one only channel dd...down to earth, realistic serials...night spent in farm...under the open sky... peace at it best...memories

Yesterday, I have completed reading this novel. This is the best novel ever I read. I searched another novel of Munshipremchand and found this master piece video. . I recommend to read 1st novel nd then this video.Thanks to #Doordarshan for making this. I always thought while reading that there should be a serial on this.
And I first watched this video and then read, so when I was reading, all characters of HORI ,DHANIYA, JHUNIA, BHOLA were imagined as these acrotrs portrayed.
