"When you look through the years and see what you could have been....oh, what you might have been...if you had had...more... time" Right in the damn feels....
When you said dreamer it reminds me - they have a song Dreamer - it could be next . others by them : School , Cannonball , Bloody Well Right , Goodbye Stranger
It's about how someone doesn't want to go home due to domestic strife, which has them wondering about life's roads untraveled. Considering that, I've always loved how the clarinet and harmonica duel toward the end, sounds like an argument between the two parties in an unhappy couple.
Love your channel Biz. This whole album was fire, and most of the songs on it were hits. 1979-80 were the years of my senior year in high school and this was on 8-track in my vehicle and was part of the soundtrack of my life at that time. Others have mentioned it, though it seems to be a subject of some debate in the comments, but the two instruments were the harmonica and the soprano saxophone. Rock on, my friend!
Supertramp. Breakfast in America, a great album. “The Logical Song”, “Goodbye Strangers“, “Breakfast in America”, “Oh Darling”, of course the one you’re doing “Take The Long Way Home”, and more
Taking the long way home to me, means realizing what is important in life. All of the schedules, deadlines, business collapses into nothing at the end of the day (end of one’s life) and the stuff that you decided to experience outside of that world in your “Free time” IS LIFE. You are coming up with great stuff in these reactions. And great music, too!
Saw them live three times in Vancouver in the late 70s. They were hugely popular in Canada. I need to dig back into them. It feels good to see someone appreciate them right out of the gate in 2022. Great review Biz!
"Through my lens and my perspective." That's the only real way to experience art, brother. Ha! And "Dreamer" is a different song by them, another really good one, too. Awesome reaction!
Biz, my man. You have NO idea how much I appreciate your reaction (albeit dissection) of this tune. When you were commenting on "part of the furniture", my mouth dropped open, because that is EXACTLY how it was! Great insight, excellent reaction and review.
Supertramp is just a beautiful sounding band. I love 3 of their albums and a 4th one is still growing on me. Remember they have two singers. Check out Goodbye Stranger it's 🔥 🔥 🔥
You got it right Biz, great lyrics leave it to ourselves to interpret. May mean one thing to some and something else to others. Well written lyrics and music create an emotion, a connection, that bring us all something to ponder, enjoy and share with others. As you said starts a conversation and brings us all together.
One of my favorites back in the day !! Loved it then still do!! Rock on biz! I’d love to have a time travel machine and drag you back to the 70’s for a weekend for some night moves and take the long way back home!! Lol
I love your take on the lyrics #shlyrics! It comes through fresh ears and mind from you. That's what I love about your reaction channel. It's the only one I listen to anymore. You truly appreciate the music and all that goes with it. You're thinking about an accordion. I always thought it was a harmonica. Supertramp is genius! Peace!
@@karenmikalofsky5287 It's an eye opener for certain. Something we've known for practically our whole lives, and suddenly get an entirely different perspective is almost startling...for lack of a better word. I agree with you too! This is why I love the comment section. Great people!
The harmonica is awesome - it sounds lonely and ice-cold. I associate this song with the Fall, with our protagonist walking from streetlight to streetlight through a deserted park on a windy, drizzly October night.
That's Rick Davies, playing an F harp. He's the reason I can play. There's a lot of technical playing called "bending" going on there. He's playing a Wail, and bending it around that F key.
This song was written with the perspective that the life of the band members had on the road. They have other asperations other than singing in front of an audience and to Roger Hodgsen's wife it seem insane to only see him for a short time then he's off on the road again.
A beautiful, dark, tragic, sad, real life song with an upbeat, happy, groove instrumental… until the end.. then it’s dark! Such an underrated AMAZING band.
Other bands to check out SQUEEZE (up the junction, cool for cats) SLADE ( get down get with it live, coz I luv you, come on feel the noise) SWEET. ( Blockbuster, ballroom blitz) 👍👍👏👏👏🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
😂😂😂. Harmonica. That section with the two instruments trading leads is clarinet and harmonica. No grief, bruh. Your ears are good - trust ‘em. We’re ALL learning.
Biz,,..... to me " lonely days turn to lonely nights. you take a trip to the city lights " was always going to the city to find a lady of the night to treat me right and get revenge on the wife for treating me like the furniture..... But that's just the way I think of that line.
When this album first came out me and my (now ex) husband took it over (we were invited) to another bar owner's tavern who had just put in a brand new stereo system that morning. A Harman-Kardon if I recall, top of the line in the 70's. Said tavern owner really cranked up the volume because *School* starts out quiet, well we didn't know.... And just like that he blew the speakers. Oops. But *School* deserves to be played very very loud. Could have been worse. Could have been Our stereo in Our tavern, lol. ** Note to self: when you have insomnia, and while away the hours watching reaction videos, then don't fall asleep with a bowl of half melted ice cream 🍧 in your hand, and which, got turned upside down and landed on me, my pillow and my tablet. Just Love cleaning up at 2 am, 🤪 BTW, have you reacted to any Bachman, Turner Overdrive yet? BTO, another rabbit hole worth jumping into. Let It Ride, You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, Takin' Care of Business, Roll On Down the Highway, and my fave, Blue Collar. (Suggesting studio versions first) Have an awesome weekend!!
Late to the video, but I would like to recommend “Child of Vision” from the great Breakfast in America album from Supertramp. It has the vibe that you got from the previous songs you reviewed. I appreciate you and your thoughts on the songs you listen to.
I think this is a song that answers a song by Rick Davies (the other singer) called Crime of the Century. To me, in these two songs they're both lamenting their lack of fulfilling domestic lives while ironically complaining about the mundane nature of celebrity. It's a very self-aware pair of songs.
You’re thinking of an accordion, but no, it is absolutely 100% harmonica. As for Supertramp albums, they made a bunch of beauties, and you should absolutely immerse yourself in them, on a full-album level. Most of the great music made for decades was not isolated four-minute popcorn puffs, but fully integrated into the programming of an album. Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” (the home of this tune and “The Logical Song”, and a feast of others) is a whole ecstatic experience - the joyous sounds accumulate in your head over its course, until you may find yourself laughing out loud and hugging yourself like a child. The album “Crime of the Century”, where “Rudy”, “School”, and other stunners reside, is darker and more expansive - an album for a cold rainy day, lying on the floor with earphones. Enjoy the journey. ✌🏻
Sorry Biz. I searched, found it, and had already watched it, and liked the reaction. Damn, I have watched so many of your reactions now I am forgetting what has been done. Lol.. or I am just old... Thanks!
You definitely didn't get the love it deserves whether you thought this is a good song are you going through the motions this song is a straight banger bring it back
Would love to see you react to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat performing "Barcelona". At first you'll be surprised you're reacting to an opera song. But soon you'll be completely blown away by the power of Freddie and Monserrat's amazing voices. It gives me goosebumps every time I see it! ua-cam.com/video/hkskujG0UYc/v-deo.html
Turn your thoughts to a man. Works hard for his family. Think about that ride home to his family. He takes the long way home. A little extra time to avoid the homecoming, which means he’ll be taken for granted for all that he does for his family.
"When you look through the years and see what you could have been....oh, what you might have been...if you had had...more... time" Right in the damn feels....
EVERY STINKING TIME. This is possibly my most favorite song of my lifetime. ❤❤
just absolutely brutal

Roger Hodgsen's piano skills are outstanding in all of their albums. Such a tight bunch of players.
We've all taken that long way home at least once. This tune can hit hard when you hear the lines and remember.
One of my favourites, Biz! Love Supertramp. The musicianship was amazing. And the stories the songs tell.
Completely agree.
My favorite Supertramp song. The harmonica is outstanding. It's one of those songs that can get stuck in your head for days.

Love cranking this song up in the car with the windows down on a hot summer night. On a deserted country road

Edit: ”Goodbye Stranger” is absolutely fab. Best outro ever. It’s on the same album.
You need to watch The Big Lebowski, it's all about the rug. 😅

Outstanding Biz .
This one never fails to deliver on multiple levels .
As nostalgic as it is timeless .
Thank you
The other "high pitched" instrument is a Soprano Sax.
...and a clarinet
Wow I would have never guessed that
@@65alef yup, clarinet and sax, in perfect sync
Fire for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved them when they came out and yes, they6 were cery underrated. IMHO
Thnx so much for reviewing this great tune! And yes, that’s a harmonica &, i think a soprano sax.
Damn, loved this song!

Awesome tune!!!!!!
Next songs that should be on your list for Supertramp are "Dreamer", and "Bloody Well Right"!
That is Rick Davies playing a F harp. And bending it well.
So good, try Rudy, Even in the Quietest Moments, or Fools Overture, you'll love them
Its a harmonica, bro. Def an under rated band. Cool reaction, keep it up !
Lol I was right at first 🤦🏿♂️
Quickly becoming my favorite Reactor. keep up the great work!
Thank you
As a former clarinet player, I love this song.
I love your thoughts on song lyrics and the music. Supertramp does both very well. Breakfast in America was a perfect album.
And, yeah, I took the long way home more often than not.
I remember when this album came out. There are quiet a few good tracks on it. Another one worth checking out is Even in the Quietest Moments
You should be looking at the music score as well as the lyrics. 😉
Great reaction!!
