    1:44 Jeff minimizes the impact that training decisions have on injury risk
    6:31 Jeff blames the injury on abduction
    9:09 Powerlifters actually almost never experience this injury
    14:56 Jeff's approach ignores anthropometry entirely
    17:04 Conclusion: STOP NOCEBO'ING
    Jeff Cavaliere of ATHLEAN-X DOTCOM recently released a video discussing the Ryan Crowley pec tear incident that went viral a few short weeks ago. In his video Jeff ultimately, essentially, blamed Ryan's injury on bench pressing with a large amount of humeral abduction, in spite of the MYRIAD of other factors at play there, of which there were a vast, vast abundance. It is disingenuous to try to point to a single culprit in an instance such as this, and the end result, as evidenced by hordes of comments from people who are now scared to bench press (even though their risk of experiencing this injury is slim to none), is that the UA-cam fitness community is NOCEBO'D by it's "savior" once again. So today I ask - no, I BEG - Jeff Cavaliere, Athlean-X, the King of UA-cam Fitness: PLEASE STOP nocebo'ing the community that you preside over!

    Jeff started out benching on the smith machine and we never really see him barbell pressing with a lot of weight (aside from the fake weight video). I just don't think Jeff pushes himself to train bench heavy, which is fine, but that will lead him to not really understand various forms of benching because your form will adapt as you go heavier and heavier.
    But I agree with you and talked about this in my video reaction. Ryan's injury didn't happen "that day". It's months of abuse & micro-tearing and not listening to your own body. Great video Alek!

    When I was young, I had wide grip and more flaring elbows than not, and NEVER experienced shoulder pain.
    Now that I am in my Forties, it's not the same and I have to say that the shoulder pain started when I was only bike riding as my sport. Back into weight lifting since a few years, I have to be more careful. But honestly, I don't feel that the flaring of the elbows is related to the pain I 'm experiencing.
    I have to say that the pain is less present since I have retake weight lifting as my training....

    No PT here or expert, but I appreciate this series. Injuries are waiting for all of us. That is just the nature of life. But, not using your body for what it was intended to do, to move, and hampering mobility to such a degree, is just begging for problems. The sad thing is, the good literature out there makes this abundantly clear. Just look at the principles outlined in the text by Tudor Bompa, Periodization Training for Sport: 1) mobility; 2) general sport preparation; and so on..... The first principle is mobility. Look at the great Olympic lifters, they have freaky mobility. Just look at one of Klokov’s warm up sessions. Designing a training program without addressing mobility seems akin to designing a space program without adequately accounting for gravity. Again, thanks for the content.

    Your point on ankle sprains in football is a really interesting one. I never knew it. It makes sense. That’s why I do things to strengthen my ankles for boxing, since you’re constantly shifting weight and changing direction and that strains the ankles. I prefer to run outside on unpaved roads to train my ankles. I also never wore calf-high boxing shoes because I felt they limited my movement and were a hassle to lace up, but I wonder if your point about football transfers over? Like the “extra ankle support” that calf high boxing shoes provide could be a detriment to boxers that don’t go out of their way to strengthen their ankles.

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  3 роки тому +1

      I never liked high tops for the same reason either...they limited my movement.
      Ultimately I think it's going to come down to how often you use them and how much "function" you have without them. If you only compete wearing the high laced shoes but you don't really train while wearing them (at least not all the time) then you are probably not going to be at a very high risk..but if you wear them all the time then why would your ankles ever get stronger? They won't. They'll just lag behind until one day you take a misstep and sprain it. Then the fun begins.

    • @1notdeadyet1
      @1notdeadyet1 3 роки тому +1

      @@EnkiriElite That's true. I think most boxers that use calf high shoes, would probably train with them. It's important to get the feel for the clothes you're going to wear in the ring, so that nothing feels "off". You're going into a fight, so you want all your energy and attention to be on your opponent, not distracted by shoes you're not used to wearing. Still a really good point and something I never really thought about until now. I may start recommending ankle high boxing shoes to people I train or at the very least, telling people that use calf high shoes to go out of their way to train ankles.

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  3 роки тому +1

      @@1notdeadyet1 yes, and therein lies the rub. You don't want to add variables going into a competition so pretty soon you're using them all the time. My solution is simply not to use them at all because I don't like them anyway or find them helpful. For people who do find them helpful you would be better off adding some ancillary work fornth lower legs and not wearing the high tops during the off-season. But wear them while training for a fight so that you don't throw yourself off.

    • @1notdeadyet1
      @1notdeadyet1 3 роки тому +1

      @@EnkiriElite Yeah exactly. Like I said, I never used them, but I do know a few people that do. It may be something I bring up the next time I see them (who knows when that will be). What's interesting is this concept could also apply to Boxer's Knuckle. If you don't know what that is, it's basically when your knuckles harden and get bigger due to repeated trauma. It's the principal behind Iron Fist Training. Which would mean that people that train with less padded gloves, either by design or simply from wear and tear could develop Boxer's Knuckle to a more serious degree and thus hit harder as a result.

    I also agree the flared elbows is risky. If you watch Chris Duffin videos where he described using the lats to push the bar off the chest and using more leg drive, your pushing will have more power. Tuck the elbows with the above form does lead to a safer shoulder position. If you look at Mendelssohn bench, his elbows were tucked during the fail. But I agree , if the person is not recovered then that person is at more risk.

    It is baffling the amount of educated trainers who don't really know wtf they are talking about. I went through this recently. Where I live every gym requires someone with uni education in training/physiotherapy to oversee and give people a training program; couple weeks ago one of these "teachers" (a scrawny looking dude who clearly can't squat half his BW) approached me and told me I was squatting all wrong and will end up screwing up my lower back (I was doing low bar squats and have long legs and short torso so I actually need to incline more than usual). I was confused at first because I felt my reps were pretty damn good and didn't feel anything wrong, so I thanked him and asked him to film me doing the movement again. I was left even more confused when I watched the video as he was saying I did it all wrong again because I was inclining too much and that is wrong. I sent the video to a couple friends who are actual power lifters, one who is a coach and they all said my form was solid. Meanwhile the guy kept pestering me suggesting me to train isolation quads before squatting because "that way you don't need to put so much weight when you squat and you'll build as much muscle :))".
    A week later I met the guy again, and I just told him I sent the video to a bunch of people who actually know that stuff and that they said my form was good and he lost his mind. He kept bragging about how he actually studied this in uni and I am nobody who didn't study kinesiology at the uni and that he hopes I get injured so I can "learn a lesson".
    I usually don't judge people by their strength or looks but I guess I should avoid taking gym advice from people who never actually tried to do heavy lifts at least once in their lives.

    Injuries in the gym happen due to 4 reasons only
    1: poor fatigue management. This accounts for the vast majority
    2: poor or lack of preperation, by this i mean if you have never experienced say a 4 inch deficit deadlift, its better to go light and build up to heavy work than to assume you can go heavy the first time. When doing new movements or movements you haven't done in a while, leave some weight on the table so you have room to build.
    3: freak accidents, i.e the bar drops on your chest. This almost never happens.
    4: excessive steroid use, steroids don't strengthen tendons at the same rate as muscle, high gear users need to be extremely careful and cautious.
    Thats it. There are no bad movements.

It was simply done because I am a novice lifter and I started putting on too much weight too soon and my form started going to shit. I don't blame anyone for this but myself. These bullshit theories that say things can only be done one way are just that. I am a 'runner' and god knows I have heard all the theories about heel strike for example. Alec. I agree with your over arching point about Cavalier. However, I disagree with your defense of abduction. I note that you show Jen Thompson in your rebuttal. Yet, you do not seriously take her own prescription to minimize abduction or you would not display her as if she was a promoter of abduction. Jen competes raw and equipped. She does advise a twice shoulder with grip. This is probably because she does bench equipped and that is SOP. However, Barbend has an article recommending a narrower 1.5 x shoulder width. Jen herself is adamant about “squeeze the pinkie” or the last two fingers to promote tucking in the elbows which is opposed to abduction. She may be wide but she does not advocate splaying the elbows and I would agree. She also does plyo push ups which is demanding of a good elbow tuck. She has immensely strong lats precisely because she involves them to tuck the bows. So, to conclude. I suggest that either one you did not look up Jen’s own teaching or two you do not care. I believe the first. Please, consider allow her to speak for herself in the fiiture.
