As a history student in Iowa in the US I find this incredibly interesting. All of my professors focus on broad parts of history, not little interesting things like this.
Ah, that’s interesting. Thank you. I’m not a proper historian. I just have a memory for all the stories I’ve heard and love researching the truth about them. It always seems to throw up interesting details 😂
Oh my goodness this was wonderful!! My first one and I'm going back to watch them all!! Thank you to your brother for recommending your channel!! I'm hooked!!
fantastic you are back!!!! twas cruel to give us but afew unplugs and then to stop leaving us bereft, lost, lonely and with nothing to rattle round in our brains!!! horaaay you returned!!! seriously tho you do do a great channel.I live in Dunedin New Zealand the Edinburgh of the South Seas!!!
Robert.....Love the in depth history and love for your birth place. I was, for about 10 years, the secretary of Clan Maxwell Society...and learn much about the Maxwell's of Montreith.... Hope at some time you were able to meet Sir Michael Maxwell before he passed.....He was intelligent and a kind hearted man.....One of the Lairds of Montreith felt the same way you and your family, siblings, felt about the view of the sea.....Lord Maxwell said he could see 5 kingdoms from his home..... Ireland, Isle of Man, England, Scotland and Heaven......
Thank you! I never met him, but I seem to remember being in Monreith House a long time ago. That’s interesting. My great grandmother used to say the same think about the old farmhouse.
This disappeared not three minutes after i watched in the wee hours. (oklahoma time) Thank you for fixing whatever glitch it was. Yours are the only postings i enjoy re runs of. : )
Man, I am lost in this world and don't want to leave. LOL!! My heritage is Scottish by way of Appalachia.... My fam is very proud of this (Before Outlander and called out Braveheart before it was cool... LOL), My big brother, Tuff, was married at sunset in Edinburgh... We are like Mike Myers (All things Scottish). LOL I'm a comedian; who knew?! Thanks I'll be here all week... LOL To the point; Your personality, delivery and sincerity make this gold and I eagerly watch since my brother referred ya to me. Take care and THANK YOU truly. This is a real escape and a pleasure, Brother.
Thank you thank you for the wonderful interesting stories and pictures and views. I’m so glad I heard your brother on the hoof GP mention you, thank him for me😊
I’ve been binging your videos prior to a move to Scotland. You’re a great presenter - clear, great energy, entertaining… You should look for an agent or any media opportunities - you’d be excellent on TV.
Welcome back mate, missed your bloody awesome Scottish accent and history lessons. I like this story of your family house, Graham’s was a bit different. Cheers Jeff 🇦🇺
I believe he said McCulloch. The McCullochs of Cardoness Castle, Gatehouse of Fleet, were pretty powerful, ruthless, and rather notorious. I didn’t know about this part of their history.
Turn up the volume a little? The Scottish broug makes some of the words you are saying a little hard to distinguish but it does make you sound very Scottish? 👍
Brilliant Story and of course the great Bard himself Bobby Burns was an Exciseman and he had likings for the French Revolution!! I myself was Born in the border Town of Annan where he wrote "Awa Wi The Exciseman"
I have been an Isle of Man Fan for years. Collecting their Cat Silver coins. I will never be able to visit, but if you do sit and pet a cat. {forget if allergic} I always find peace in a purr.
Yeah. Most of these are stories I already know but I use that as a starting point for the research. The details that throws up are usually where it gets interesting. 🙂
@@scotlandunplugged we'll, I love the blend of local and family history with the broader picture. I do something similar in my writing classes. Also, you tell your stories well.
I have read a bit about pirates and I can say Thurot may well have captured that many ships. But there is a very good chance that many of them were nothing more that fishing boats or other small craft. Another pirate actually captured more ships than Thurot but most were small fishing boats. I did read about one pirate who captured a ship for the purpose of buying hats for the crew. The crew had either lost their hats or they were beyond use which meant they suffered terribly in the sun. So they bought hats from the other ship and then let them go.
As a Jesuit, I am intrigued to know how his grandad could have been a Jesuit. Could you please do a fact check??!! PS. I really enjoy your videos. As well as the humor you insert into the narrative.
I’m so glad that you have begun up loading again as I love these stories and your presentation of them. Keep them coming.
What a fun story! I love history, pirates, the Scottish landscape, and hidden passages 😊
So glad Graeme shared this with us!
Thank you
I absolutely love your history lessons, you're a wonderful storyteller. Thank you, Robert 🏴

Fascinating story. I love the personal connection--I've seen your brother's video about your old family farm; this puts it in a deeper context.
This disappeared not three minutes after i watched in the wee hours. (oklahoma time) Thank you for fixing whatever glitch it was. Yours are the only postings i enjoy re runs of. : )
Thank you! I realised there were nine seconds of nothing at the start of the video and took it down while I trimmed it 😂
Great telling of the story. Kids and I really enjoyed watching.
Thank you
Nice to see you again! Great sceneries and history!
Thank you
that narration was very good, i really enjoyed it a lot, and learned something at the same time
You're a wonderful storyteller. And this is a wonderful story, as The History Guy (on UA-cam) says, "Because every good story involves pirates."
Brilliant! Love history that is told in an interesting and relatable way! Subscribed.
Thank you!
Well told, thank you. I'm lead to believe through family that trusting a Maxwell isn't the safest option.
Haha. Thank you
This was wonderful! I real treat. Love to sit down at the local pub with your brother. Seems like he would be a hoot to talk to.

Excellent story telling! But, yes, you have seen Smokey and the Bandit too many times (Cletus!)
BTW, Graeme sent me (so glad he did)
The Snow Man is a legend 😂
@@scotlandunplugged I was really fond of Fred and his disobedience.
Smoky & the Bandit is classic, you can't see it too many times!!
So totally marvelous! Every second of this video! You rough pirate, you!
I don’t know what algorithm made your videos turn up in my feed, but I’m sure glad they did! I enjoy them immensely! 😀
You are so funny, and entertaining I forget I'm getting a history lesson!!!
Thank you thank you for the wonderful interesting stories and pictures and views. I’m so glad I heard your brother on the hoof GP mention you, thank him for me😊

I've learned a lot from watching this video. Cheers 👍👍👍🙏💛🙏
Just found your channel thanks to the hoof gp and I’m excited to see what comes next
Thank you. Next is St Andrew and the saltire.
Another interesting video, would you consider doing any videos about the islands around Scotland
Keep the videos coming ❤
What was the name of the family associated with the cemetery/church founding. Did you say Martin?
I believe he said McCulloch. The McCullochs of Cardoness Castle, Gatehouse of Fleet, were pretty powerful, ruthless, and rather notorious. I didn’t know about this part of their history.
@@mcculloch29 thanks much!

I was hoping you would go into the caves. It must be a strange place to hang out.
I was sitting in the mouth of a cave when in filmed the cutaway shots on the beach. There are a lot of them down there 🙂
loved this vid!!
Thank you
It’s beautiful there by the sea.
I’d be quite happy if they plant me there… in fifty years 😆
Been a subscriber for months. At what point will you let us your name? Drives be around the bend! Great videos, thank you!
Haha. I used to introduce muskeg in the early videos but felt strangely unnatural. 😂 It’s Robert Parker. 🙂
Is it possible to watch Smokey and the bandit too often though ? 😂
Brilliant Story and of course the great Bard himself Bobby Burns was an Exciseman and he had likings for the French Revolution!! I myself was Born in the border Town of Annan where he wrote "Awa Wi The Exciseman"
Now that is a recipe I can get behind!
Archway wood riddled with holes? Old ship timbers riddled with sea worms?
