- Davis Schneider broke in to the big leagues in dramatic fashion. And now, one year later, Davis Schneider is living his worst nightmare. Davis Schneider is in one of the coldest slumps he's ever experienced at the big league level, and it's starting to raise concern with the Toronto Blue Jays. But the question is, why is this happening, and is there any hope for Davis Schneider's future?

Those who pay attention saw this coming last season. He finished the year 1-50 or something like that. Most forgot about that and only remembered his hot start. Pitchers adjusted and he didn’t.
I love the effort Davis gives but he is not an every day player
Yet...the more he plays, the greater the chances are that he figures it out, no?
@@disaj7460full season to figure out, and he couldn't do it
@@disaj7460 He’s had a season and a half to figure things out. How much more time should he get ?
@@MikeHart72 @miken8889 i hear you Mikes. i guess i just feel as tho his issue is something that requires a minor tweaking that could make all the difference. you know those niggly, fine details that can be tough for the batter to recognize, but that a coach might catch? gotta keep Hope alive...if there's life, there's Hope! you guys have any thoughts on what might be the issue?
@@disaj7460 Pitchers made adjustments to Davis and he can’t do the same. If you take away his first few weeks of his career he is not a very good hitter. Davis does always give 100% effort though, you have to give him credit for that. If next years roster includes him as an every day player the team is in for a long season
He needs to get back to basics, demote him back to AAA where he can retool and develop. He can still make a difference on the team but he needs to figure himself out.
Unfortunately, yes. He's proved he can be a major leaguer, but retooling for Davis is a necessity to get his career back on track. I still believe in Davis 👌👊👊👊👊
Unfortunately, the Blue Jays hitting coaches are not rooted in fundamentals, but are instead focused 100% on analytics and shoving iPads in the players' faces.
@@Dulcimerist I have to agree, sometimes old skool is better than new, but what’s better than either one is combining both.
@@StephenHunts oh yea for sure, he’s got major league talent, I think he’s just deflated right now and a little time back in AAA will do him some good.
can you say Ricky Romero?
You guys seem to forget he went 1-51 to end last season
fo real? Thx for that info
I wouldn't say anything went "wrong" per se. This is just what happens. A rookie might have initial success, opposing pitchers get more video and scouting reports on the rookie and adjust, and then it's up to the rookie and their hitting coach to find ways to adapt to the adjustments the opposing pitchers make. The rookie's raw talent and ability to adapt and adjust are what separates the wheat from the chaff.
Agreed...it is a dance of sorts. Once our pitching/hitting staff start making those adjustments quicker...then relaying the new strategy to the players (if they're unaware)...hopefully that'll translate into a much quicker turnaround time!
Same as what went wrong with Travis Snider. Over-hyping your own prospects when the reality is they're not even MLB top 100 prospects. The reality is the Blue Jays minor league system is one of the worst. They should be tanking as much as possible to get a top 5 pick in next year's MLB draft and maximizing their international draft pool.
Another sad case of reality, it'll getcha every time.
Send him to buffalo to work things out not the majors
That would make too much sense but when does Ross Atkins makes sense??
I said this would happen in earlier videos. I didn't think he would do this badly though but when he goes cold its for a long nasty time.
"Toronto Blue Jays rookie Davis Schneider made plenty of headlines when he broke out this summer, but home plate umpires have done their best to put a stop to that success.
According to Codify, no MLB batter has had a higher percentage of out-of-zone pitches called strikes against them than Schneider. Still, the 24-year-old second baseman is batting .270 with a .995 OPS since making his big league debut in August."
After watching Schneider in several games after his streak ended, I'm inclined to agree with them.
That's a troubling stat...def concerning. I hope John starts piping up more...you cant let that nonsense persist...with any of your players!
High and away pitches should be easy to lay off.
Davis is in a slump, didnt you just talk about Vladdy. Come on, all the good batters go into slumps.
Hoping he has a great career 🤞🏻 he’s a super genuine guy
I know it’s not me but I am very superstitious and ever since I got a Davis Schneider T-Shirt this year he’s looked horrendous (.171 AVG .507 OPS) compared to before (.245 AVG .793 OPS). Need him to turn it around because it seems like every time I get a jersey/shirt (NFL/MLB) of someone something happens whether that be trade, injury, or they just fall off completely.
Keep up the content bro.
The stats, breakdowns, keep it coming!
Can we talk about chances of making playoffs? Far shot. But love to some thoughts, and scenarios.
He has been given the Caven Biggio treatment by the manager. You cant hit if you dont play
And you can't get consistent if you don't play nearly everyday
I dont understand why it takes players so long to make adjustments? They are professionals and should be able to make these adjustments or change the mindset of their at-bat. Why did it take Springer so long to make his adjustment? Im sure the batting coaches and Schneider see how he is being pitched too, wouldnt this be an easy adjustment?
The hitting coaches aren't good at making adjustments, either. That's why the team keeps having to bring in guys like Dante Bichette or Edwin Encarnacion to work with hitters, and why Blue Jays hitters have sought hitting advice externally from people like Jesse Barfield.
Batting is reactionary, while pitching is proactive. It's really hard to stop yourself from swinging at something that looks hittable but isn't in the fraction of a second you have to figure that out, while it's much easier to plan to throw things that are hard to hit when you have a scouting report on a guy.
@@ChanJENI but you do have metrics and statistics on what pitches the pitchers tend to throw. You also have an idea or get reports on where pictures are attacking you. In this instance, pictures have figured out that Schneider is swinging high and away. These batters are professionals and have a trained eye and this is why they get paid the big bucks. there is a big enough sample size here for the Jays batting coaches to start coaching Schneider on a different approach.
If you look back this isn,t unusual for the Jays. John Schnieder has been playing him in different positions every game IF he plays. This does nothing for a player. He is a second baseman. They same thing happened to Biggio and Merrifield and a handful of others. Players need consistency.
There’s a reason why he’s been in the minor leagues for so long- he’s just not good enough. Sure he came up and hit up a storm until the pitchers started exploiting his weaknesses . So unless he’s able to adapt he’s just another player with limited skills that can’t make the jump to the MLB.
Come on, rookies often look brilliant when they first get to the bigs. The combination of adrenaline and pitchers not knowing what to throw them often results in big at bats. Note young Mr. Wagner last night. Give it a month or so and you'll begin to see the real player.
Agreed. Wagner got three hits off of a 6.00+ ERA pitcher, and then went nuts over him.
He never hit the high fastball. It was known since he was in the league for 2 weeks.
Unfortunately, like with Kirk, everyone latched on to an early hot streak which massively overrated these players in our eyes.
The problem isn't that he stopped hitting, it's that we thought he could hit in the first place .
There's a difference..
Just pulled a numbered blue wave chrome. Would be my luck.
Davis Schneider is my favorite player. I think he will return to his previous excellence!!❤
His manager happened!
Super Joe Charboneau had a huge rookie year in 1980. He hit poorly over the next two seasons and was out of MLB for good by 1983. It happens.
it happens a lot. look at all the ROYs who turned out blah.
I got Kevin Maas and Joe Charboneau vibe of him.
Maybe he's overthinking now cold runs will do that. Trying to be positive for him . That's how I believe fans should be
100% agree.
I think he can make the adjustments!
Agreed!💯
We all to remember he was drafted in the 28th round so that being said he has had a good career
Everyone was enamored by his hot start. But the last half of his season last year showed you everything you needed to know that he wasn't the player people hyped him to be. I pointed it out and got shouted down as just a hater. But it was very evident he has plenty of weak points in his strike zone that pitchers can and do exploit. And sure enough, they shined through even more this season now that there's a clear mlb scouting report on him.
Hate to say I told you so but I called this before the season started. I believe I said to me he looks like the second coming of Kevin Maas and, well, I was right.
That what I was thinking.
Schneider knows that there is no future on this team as long as Guerrero is the team’s player union’s shop steward and he has only his own interests in mind . He has soured the team against management and to hell with the team and to hell with the fans ! They all see the writing on the wall and we lose the likes of Semien and Chapman and Jansen and Turner who thrive once the get away from the teams negativity and futility.
Hence why he was never ranked. I'm not surprised. He was a flash in the pan but only a AAA player.
Davis was over rated, his defense also sucks. If a player is below average at the plate you have to have outstanding defense.
like kevin kiermaier
@@JamieLam-k3p Kevin great defense just hit 3 run homer for Dodgers to win the game. You want Kevin in the outfield, you don't want Davis anywhere when the game is on the line.
Cool guy, hope he gets his mojo back.
What no one expected from Davis was his start to his career. Everyone should expect what he is doing now. That is why he was drafted when he was drafted. Jays suck so much that they clung on to hope for anyone that showed some ability. Davis would never have been called up on a legit contender. Look at biggio….dfa yet the jays held on to him like he was gold lol
Davis is in a slump but that stache is slugging .475
I watch as some wanted him to replace Vladdy now?
For some reason the Jays are a place now where hitters and pitchers go to die. As soon as Kikuchi left, he got better. The list goes on....
I would send him to minors to get confidence back without the pressure of the bigs.
Plus playing every day in AAA is better than riding the bench.
@Dulcimerist he was playing every day when he was hitting, but the other teams got the book on his weak spots. He needs to work on the holes in his swing in the minors
@@stevea2488 Agreed. He isn't going to have a chance to work on that sitting on the bench with Toronto. He needs regular reps with Buffalo.
Rosters expand at the end of the month, if I'm remembering correctly. They could give him two weeks in AAA and bring him up when the rosters expand. I doubt he would be moved down after rosters expand, since I have no idea who else they'd bring up.
He would be a good winter ball candidate.
EVERYONE saw this coming except for Jays media and fans. Absolutely clueless. Hey, is Otonhi still coming to Toronto?? You guys just don't get it.
Yah davis schneider cant hit a beachball right now. His last HR was May 31st the walkoff which i saw live. he cant hit, he has to turn it around lol
He's Double A material in the majors like several others. Too many teams for the talent available and will get worse with expansion. The Oklahoma U women team hit better than many MLB players, and from much closer to a pitcher!
Here's a crazy idea, how about his coaches help him to adjust his swing. It's what any team would do. Can our coaches not help this guy?
How bout Sportsnet stop putting new players on pedestal and try a figure out why there minor league system can’t teach anything
These channels are just as bad.
They have to spew out content.
This team has been garbage for a year now....
Hearing these guys try to be positive while the wheels are falling off is 1984 fake news.
Jays have been a Triple A team for a few years now with players going back and forth from the QEW with Buffalo. If they spend more $$ I'd sell all my Rogers shares instantly. I buy shares to male $$, not them winning!!
He's standing different this year. When he came up last year he had a more straight up stance. This year he's kind of leaning down.
I noticed that too, but could it really be the thing that's making all the difference? I feel as tho it's a number of variables eh?
Davis has 138 Career games
425 Career at bats
18 HR
And a .226 AVG
Pitchers will figure you out .
This sounds a lot like the Alejandro kirk story also caught lightning in a bottle for a month or two end of a season.. we trade away Moreno and now look where out catcher position is. Also why aren't we teaching these guys to hit fastballs lol the whole team stinks at it except vladdy.... get rid of mattingly and the 13 other batting hitting coaches. Find one guy that's good have one voice one gameplan
Jesse Barfield is the hitting coach the Blue Jays need. He is focused on fundamentals, and uses analytics as a tool in the toolbox for polishing and refining things. The current coaches and entire culture of the Blue Jays is a 100% all-in attitude on analytics, letting analytics dictate everything.
Stop swinging for the fences and start putting it in play .
he had a hot run. He shouldnt even have made the team out of spring training. The seasons lost anyways, send him to the minors and bring someone else up.
Davis Schneider is to offence to what john McDonald was to defense in this city. People way overrated what the true abilities are!
It called scouting . He tries to hit everything over the left field fence so they just pitch him away . This is nothing new for the Blue Jays .
The Blue Jays sub par batting coaches ruined him as they do most player. Coaching staff are amateurs!!!😮
Davis Schneider's Statistics: Batting 0.0740 in August; 0.140 in August; 0.000 last 7 Days. He just can't hit a Baseball. A Minor league player at best. Like the manager, not part of Blue Jays future. He is embarrassing. Pitchers adjusted and he can't. Its' not a slump, he is useless!
Flash in the pan
He was clubbing wall scraping home runs off the end of his bat. It was just a matter of time until scouts analyzed his swing and figured him out. Send him to the minors.
He's one of the 3 outcome guys, he either walks, strikes out, or extra bases. Basically a less talented Adam Dunn or Joey Gallo. Nobody is scared of him so they just attack him up in the zone.
Vlad mvp
He'll probably be better on another team.....
Same thing happened to Bo Vladdy and Springer, pitchers exploited them with breaking balls away and out the zone. All of them underperformed because they struggled to make adjustments. Nothing will change for Davis until Davis actually does something different to change the situation. It doesn’t matter what managers , coaches, or analysts tell him, what advice is given, or even what the game plan is - the only person who is responsible for his performance is Davis. I’m rooting for Davis to bounce back soon, but it’s all on him to make it happen.
There's nothing more frustrating than knowing there's an issue...even being able to id the issue...yet not being able to attack it with a sound strategy to make the necessary adjustment(s). That's where the coaching staff comes in, no?
Hoping & believing for Bo's & Davis' turnaround too!
@@disaj7460 I think it’s easy for a fan like me to assume that coaches aren’t doing enough to get a player out of a slump. But there really isn’t much more a coach can do other than advise a player on what to change/adjust. If the player doesn’t make changes then things will stay the same. Sure coaches & strategy can help a little, but biggest impact comes when players make adjustments and execute. Both vladdy and Springer struggled for most of this season, and they got out of their slumps because they made changes not because coaches suddenly figured out what to tell them.
I expected it… he and Horwitz both had (have) flash in the pan written all over them
Horwitz has pro ABS atleast though. Kinda like Biggio but better contact and power.
Horwitz’s underlying metrics suggest this is real
Hope this doesn't befall Horwitz
Or Wagner
Blame it on Donny baseball. Hes a fuckin bum
first
Great. Your the big winner!
He sucks lol
"Babe" Schneider is hitting .168 since June 1 - and to date 17 Aug he's 2 for his last 30. Gee, I wonder why is he even in the lineup .....and batting mostly in the middle of that lineup?
Another Jays sophomore bust!
