@Creed Tatum Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
You told me that this lens was really good, and now I can see with my eyes...WOW! The value for money is quite impressive. The image quality is beautiful, and I'm very impressed by the tiny tiny amount of distortion considering the extreme 9mm focal length. As always, very informative video. Nice job, mate! Cheers :)
No exaggeration.. focus peaking is a game changer for manual lenses on mirrorless cameras, and especially vintage lenses with lower contrast or when shot wide open.
Hi Andy, i finally bought that lens 9mm Laowa because YOU. Wow.....thanks very much cuz it is a very very great lens, it is so sharp, little, light & Cheap. Can't complain AT ALL. Once again.....Thanks very much, Andy.
Hi Andy. Thanks for your thoughtful review of the Laowa 9mm. I have been considering adding this to supplement the 10-24 and you have almost convinced me. I am looking forward to seeing the results of your upcoming astro shoots. That will be the deciding factor. Best regards from New Zealand.
Hi Andy I hope you're well....Some news I finally have the X-T3 YAY!! But it leaves me poor again and I'm trying to find the best wide glass. I can't afford at all the 10-24 whatsoever. So do you think if I go for the Laowa or the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm could be a nice alternative to the 10-24mm? Is the vignetting is really a problem?
I am looking for interior photography and for video. Trying to choose between this and the 10-24. Not overly worried about the price or the widest aperture, so if the Laowa was shot at f4, how would picture quality compare? Do you think that one could easily pick which lens took the photo (other than by the angle of view, of course)?
I think the 10-24 is slightly better at f4, particularly in the corners where the Laowa can be a little soft until around f8. Unless you need the extra width or the faster aperture, the 10-24 is the better lens.
@@AndyMumford If I were to only use it on the widest focal length and nothing lower than f11, would the Laowa 9mm be a comparable lens to the 10-24? I would like to have a smaller prime lens but not sure about the vignetting issue which I'm not sure if the 10-24 also has or not. I currently use the Fuji 14mm 2.8 and that's a really special lens with almost no distorion and I'm impressed that the Laowa lens has almost no distortion as well. I just want something ultra wide for landscapes.
I have this amazing 9mm lens on a Canon M50 aps-c and wanted to know is it at its absolute sharpest set to infinity?? I shoot real estate and not sure it is, especially shooting hdr bracketed photos.
What I've noticed with this lens is that it's not focused to infinity when the focus ring is turned to the infinity mark..it's a little before. That's where it's sharpest
@@AndyMumford So by that, you mean just to the right of the infinity ring? I agree with you, this is not at its sharpest at the left ring where it ends. Rather it's just a little to the right of the right ring. And it's best to look at your focus peaking to be sure.
i am considering between this laowa 9mm to 10-24mm, i've already owned a fuji 16mm, i do landscape mainly. any suggestion on which one should i take? thx.
i bought the 9mm, because of, 1. budget, 2. f2.8 for potential star shooting 3. such wide angle will definitly blow my mind. 4. I'm not that pro that will benifite from the zoom, i will most probably jump from 18mm all the way down to 9 mm if i need wide shot. hope this will help you.
0.9 mm distortion. lens - Looks cool. Easy ergonomics. Small. Light. Solid build. Handles well (focus + aperture rings). The wide angle provides a big challenge for composition and exposure. Kinda awesome. Sharp across most of the plane. Still the feel of the image is photographic flat. There is a certain soulless rendition of the light tone, depth. More digital than film
Hi! I love your videos and I enjoyed your review of X-H2, Thanks for that again! Have you tried this lens on xh2? I wonder if it has enough sharpness/resolving power to produce images with more than "good enough/usable" quality. Thank you very much in advance.
Hi Andy. Great video and interresting look at the 9mm laowa. I saw that you will go to Abisko, Sweden this winter. Its a great place and beautifull. Im going up there in the beginning of september hoping to catch som great images and autumn colors. Theres a lake at Riksgränsen called Trollsjön that i will visit. The area up to that lake looks amazing with hughe boulders and i guess plenty of opurtunities for photos.
Hi Andreas, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. Yes, I'll be in Abisko in February...I don't know the area at all - it's being organised by an expedition company and a guy who works in the area. It looks like an amazing place though, I'm excited to see it.
Hi Andy, Great review as always. I am traveling to Iceland on May 23. I am considering buying the Laowa 9mm for my Xt-30. As you have been there, would you recommend it, or you still prefer the 8-16mm? I also have the Fujinon 16mm 1,4mm. Is it worst upgrading to 9mm? is the extra reach really useful in Iceland? Thanks
Well, it really depends what you want. The 8-16mm is a sharper lens, but it's huge and weighs so much. Personally, I don't find ultra wide lenses that useful in Iceland so I wouldn't want to carry something as big as the 8-16mm for the very rare occasions when the 10-24mm isn't wide enough. Also, the 8-16mm is going to feel really unbalanced with the X-T30
It's a beauty lens. I'm considering it for video productions. I have a Sigma 18-35, a 7 artisans, 25mm, 1.8, and 55 Mark II, 1.4, and this Lowa would round off what I could need. I'll be using it on a Canon EoSm, with Magic Lantern.
Hi Andy, thanks for the video, it's really useful for me. Can you please advice me how should I use filters with this? I'm relatively new to photography!
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful. The lens takes screw in filters. How you use them really depends on the effect you want. I talk all about how filters work in this video ua-cam.com/video/aG8bf0gXo6Q/v-deo.html
When I was testing this lens it was in Iceland in the summer when it never gets dark enough for night shots. Since then I've not really had the opportunity for any astro photography but in January and February I should get a chance to do some
I love your helpful videos! You encourage me a lot to get better in my landscape photography! I'm currently debating on buying this 9mm lens or something else. I currently have fuji xt2, 16-55mm f2.8, 55-200mm. If you had a money to spend for one item, would you buy this or a drone?
Thanks Sean, glad you like the videos. Between this lens and a drone I'd go for a drone. This is a speciality lens - useful for certain things, but you're 16-55 will do 90% of what this lens does. A drone on the other hand is something completely different and offers completely new possibilities
Andy Mumford Your teachings and your works are slowly building me up to get better. Here are some of my work if you are ever curious about what kind of impact you had in past 8 months. I got my hands on a camera for the first time since September last year with a 13 years old dslr and now I'm a Fuji guy. Thank you Andy! I love your work gurushots.com/seankimstyle/photos
Hi Jimmy, I do still use that lens sometimes, although I prefer the Viltrox 13mm (reviewing coming soon). I've just been lent a NiSi 9mm f2.8 which I'm about to test as well, but none are as small and light as the Laowa, and it's still a decent lens
@@AndyMumford Hi Andy. Great to know. Thanks for responding. I am very keen to know if the viltrox is wide enough for you. and whether you have tried the Rokinon 12mm F2
Great Video Andy, lets assume the 16-80 f4 optics are as good as 10-24, do you think 9mm laowa & 16-80 better options than 10-24 and 18-55 kit lens for filling the gap to 55-200 / 50-140...? Thanks...
Great video and some amazing images there too. I'm considering this lens myself for use with my Sony a6600 aps-c e-mount body. Manual focus lenses aren't a problem as far as I'm concerned. Have you ever tried this lens with a circular polariser filter? I know such filters aren't always a great idea for such ultrawide angle lenses. Thanks.
I've had this lens now for a while (and bought it partly influenced by your review, thanks) and now want to use if for astrophotography. Have you used it for shooting stars in the meantime and how did it perform, thanks!:)
I've used it a couple of times for stars, but it mostly gets used for auroras. It's fine for stars, although there is so comma in the stars at the borders
Great review! I’ve been looking at an ultra wife for my X-T2, both for travel and for my channel here. I think I’ll need to rent one. Thanks for the great info on this!
Thanks for your review! I'm wondering what this lens is like compared to the Panasonic Lumix 9mm F/1.7 LEICA? What is the difference between F2.8 and F/1.7 ? Is one better than the other is shooting in low light? I ordered the panasonic one 2 months ago and all the webshites say its out of stock and waiting for it to be sent to them from panasonic, really sloppy!! Anyway ye just wonted to know cos I'll maybe need a refund and get the Laowa asap if this continues by the way, the camera i have and what I'll use it for is the GH5 4k video shooting myself busking in day and night time on monopod
Hi Andy, what is your setup to use square filter on this lens ? Im thinking, 49-67 step up rings. + 67 adapter + cpl + square filter .. but im afraid it will cause "heavy vignette". Also, do you have tutorials on how to remove vignette?
That set up shot be OK to avoid vignetting..it depends on the thickness of the CPL and the size of the square filters (you should be fine if they're 100mm, but 75mm or 85mm will be a problem) As for removing vignette post capture. it's not something you can really do at all well and it's best to avoid it if possible
While removing vignetting might be easy nowadays, it increases the noise in the corners. According to Optical limits the vignetting wide open is rated at 4 stops and 3 stops at f/4. So imagine you're shooting the night sky at ISO 3200 and f/2.8, if you decide to remove the vignetting you'll increase the equivalent ISO in the corners to 51200 ;)
Cheers for the comment. I don't need to imagine because I've actually been using the lens for over a month. I'm very fortunate in that I get to borrow gear and spend some time actually using it before I decide whether to buy it or not. 3 to 4 stops doesn't fit with what I've seen in my experience using it (the image with the red door for example was taken at f4) - measuring it now it's closer to 2 stops, and reducing noise from the sky on astro shots is incredibly easy. Each to their own because of course it's different for everybody, but it's a minor issue for me.
I've just created a Lensfun vignetting correction profile for the Laowa 9 mm f/2.8 Zero-D. Wide open vignetting in the corner is about 3 stops. LensTip also indicate a little more than 3 stops. I am pretty sure 4 stops is exaggerated.
I have purchased this lens and used it for the first time. I have never used a manual lens before and did manage to work out that I need to put the camera settings to work without a lens. I then had a go at some stars, which I normally do very well, but found them once loaded onto computer to not be sharp at all. Obviously I have some settings wrong, but as I said, maybe don't understand the dials properly on the manual lens. Can I ask what you would do with this lens for stars? I did have the infinity symbol on the front dial lined up with the red line. I can't remember where the aperture dial sat. I am using a fujifilm xt-5.
On pretty much every manual lens I've ever used (and this lens is no exception), the mark for infinity on the lens barrel isn't where infinity actually is. The best thing you can do is play around with the lens in daylight focusing on something really distant, and then mark it on the lens (I put a small scratch in the barrel on mine). Usually it's a few degrees of turn before the infinity mark on the lens. If you're focusing at night, the best thing to do is find a star and then zoom into it (before shooting) and twist the focus ring until the star is as sharp as possible (when it becomes a point rather than a blur), and that's your infinity
I was going to buy Samyang 12mm but after this video change my mind. But this Laowa 9mm has f2.8 maximum aperture but Samyang has f2.2. So is this difference that level crucial in this case? Or other advantages of Laowa 9mm overcome this difference in maximal aperture?
The Samyang has one extra stop, but I don't find that to be crucial, and prefer to have a little more width in a lens that I use for shooting as much of the sky as possible
Andy, in one of your other videos you mentioned that you used this lens for astrophotography. I wonder if that is still the case? Or have you found a better ultra-wide lens? Considering also the Samyang 12mm f/2. Thanks!
@@AndyMumford Never heard of NiSi. I'll keep an eye out. Meanwhile, I've already ordered the Laowa. :) Thanks again for your beautiful videos. Always inspiring.
Update. Got the lens yesterday from B&H here in the US. Bad copy. Bad fit on the camera, and soft all around. Shipped back in the mail this morning. I'll wait and see what's coming this year.
Hi Andy. Great video as always. I've been searching for a ultra wide lens and I also came across the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8. The internet says it's the 'best'!!! Did you consider that as well by any chance??
This time of year is terrible for astro-photography where I live. I'll be in the Alps in a few weeks so I'll test it out then, if not then later in the winter when the night skies are better.
I seen other videos and they say flaring is an issue as well. How bad did u find it ? And how did u counter it? Would filters be enuff for example? Thanks
I haven't found flaring to be an issue, but I've not used it all that much in bright light. I tend to use it as an astro lens, but having said that, when I tested it in the sun I don't remember it being any more of an issue than on any other wide angle lens I've used.
@@AndyMumford awesome.. thanks Andy.. I'm using an a6500 and it's kind of a toss up between the loawa and samyang/rokinknon 12mm.. loawa is pricey for a manual lens.. currently using a cheap 7artisans 7.5mm f2.8 fish eye for ultra wide and while it does that decent images... sometimes its so wonky i can't save it in edit
Andy, Could you tell me what do you think would be a better first wide prime for fuji? samyang 12mm f/2 or laowa 9mm f/2.8 This samyang seems to be really sharp and the extra stop of light helps more than 6mm equivalent diference for astro. But I don't have a 10-24 (because $$$) And it would need to double as main landscape lens. xD Also note that the samyang is almost half the price. Is it worth trying to raise money and buy the laowa instead?
I think for a main landscape lens the 12mm is probably the best. I like the extra width for shooting stars, but 9mm is really wide and 12mm might be more flexible
No, 100mm filters don't cause the vignetting, it's just light fall off from the extremely wide field of view. ND filters in certain situations mays make it worse though (ND filters often have light fall off in the edges at wide angles).
Excellent review Andy - My kit consists of the Fuji 10-24 / 16-55 / 50-140 for my landscape work, like you I found the 10-24 wasn’t optimal for Astro work - so I had picked up the Samyang 12mm F2 . Have you any experience w/ that lens and how it compares to this lens for that purpose? [I have heard great things about the lack of distortion w/ that lens - just like you noted.] Thanks for taking the time to do such a thoughtful review, cheers, Alan
Hi Alan. I've heard the Samyang is excellent, and it has an extra stop, but I haven't used it. I picked this up simply because it's wider and offers an incredible field of view for stars.
Hi Andy, thanks for sharing! Lately I had the chance to use (and really enjoy) the beast 8-16mm for a couple of weeks and what I liked the best was the 8mm angle of view. But you know, the price of the beast is too much. So I am looking for and alternative wide solution for my fuji system. This Laowa 9mm could be the answer, especially on my xt30 for a very light mountain photography. Did you use a 49mm diameter filter or maybe you used an adapter ring? Because I am afraid that a ring or a combination of ring could increase the vignetting results. Do you actually know any other ultra wide lens for mount x? Thank you very much, I look forward your next video. Ciao!
I use a step up ring to 72mm and haven't had any problems with vignetting. There's also the Samyang 12mm f2 that you could look at. I hear it's very good
@@AndyMumford Thanks Andy! It's good to hear that step up rings don't increase vignetting. I think I would try the Laowa because it's wider . Thanks again, we're waiting for you coming to Italy, so you'll show your beautiful visions of Italian mountain. Thank you.
@@AndyMumford thanks, Have you tried the Samyang/Rokinon 12 2.0? Is similar in image quality? I've the Samyang but I want something wider without loosing sharpness, definition,...
Hi Andy, have you tested the X-T3? I know it's not out yet but I know Fuji do ask some photographers to test their new cameras before they release them.
I use it for urban landscapes and street art photos, it is a very compact and great little lens. More distortion than this lens, but nothing either Photoshop or PTlens can’t fix. I just bought the Laowa 9mm on eBay, should be here within the week. These two lenses take care of all my wide-angle needs, along with my Samyang 8mm fisheye, a fun little lens I like for a different viewpoint. They are all small and light enough to not having to think about bringing them.
I own both. I prefer the Laowa because it is wider and has a beautful sun star (I like shooting directly into the sun). I use the Samyang mainly for Milky way shots.
Thanks! Since then I've tried them all and prefer the XF 10-24mm :) I found that at F2 the Samyang was worse than the XF at F4 crazy but true! Maybe I had a bad copy.
Yes -useful and interesting. I don't think I want the 8-16 anyway, for the reasons you gave. Fuji told me they wee hoping a 3rd party supplier might solve the filter problem for them! We'll see.
I'm sure someone will come up with a way of attaching filters to the 8-16, but it certainly won't be conventional 100mm filters as they'll certainly vignette on a lens with a front element as big as that. It will have to be some sort of device that fits over the lens housing, which means carrying a different holder along with the huge lens. At the moment it's not tempting me, but I'll make my mind up when I get my hands on one later this year.
Great video as always Andy ! I was shooting some landscapes with the xt20 and 10-24 (bought it mainly because of you) and I was trying to capture some night shots with some of the rocks and greenery and the sky and it wasn't doing bad.As I was leaving the area I tried to take a final shot of the rock face and the sky above it but the shots turned out blurry. All the focusing was done manually and I did it both at infinity and a bit before it and they still turned out slightly blurry.I shot at f4,f8 and at speeds ranging from 10-30 seconds, iso was anywhere from 1600 to 6400, OIS was turned on,all shots were on a tripod with no wind whatsoever,it was pretty dark even though it was almost a full moon that was reflecting a lot of light from the sun.Any advice that you could give me for such situations and have you ever experienced something similar ? Thanks so much and all the best !
I haven't been able to try it yet as it's not really the season in Portugal and in the summer in Iceland it's never dark enough. I should be able to try it in September in the Dolomites, and then in the winter I'll be doing a lot of astro photography in the Alps and Arctic Circle.
Foto4Max ok but in official website you can download (lcp) files. can u see this link? www.venuslens.net/lens-profile-for-laowa-15mm-f-2-fe-and-15mm-f-4-are-now-available/
This pictures are awesome man. Would love to see videos of you inn action with these little cameras. I'm thinking of switching from Nikon to Fuji. I never really shoot sport so why bother with the giant glass?
Thanks, glad you like the shots. I have quite a few videos on my channel of my shooting with these cameras This from Norway ua-cam.com/video/mNkx1KOP9gc/v-deo.html and this from the Dolomites ua-cam.com/video/M4OXoL4tgFI/v-deo.html
It's a great lens but I don't own it anymore as I almost never used it. I preferred the extra flexibility of the 10--24mm, and the 16mm wasn't wide enough to shoot stars with (although it has an excellent fast aperture).

Andy Mumford , Thanks didn’t want to assume. As a hiker I’m looking for a camera to take along. As the phone is just not capturing the beauty of Mother Nature to share with others. Looking at Fuji T2 vs Sony RX 100 VI almost same price point....What’s you thoughts? Realize it’s apple and oranges but it seems to come down to these two thus fare
Indeed, I've used the 8-16mm a few times and it's a great lens, but to be honest I much prefer to have the 10-24mm and this 9mm along with me if I ever want to shoot astro
One thing to mention: Mine for example focuses to infinity perfectly fine but unfortunately it does so quite a bit before the infinity mark. This makes is really quite hard to use for Astro, since you need to remember where the actual spot was, in order to not mess us your shots
I wonder if that's a fault in your copy, because mine focuses to infinity on the mark. I really don't think whether something is made in China bears mentioning to be honest - various Fuji lenses and cameras are produced in China.
There's not a huge difference between 9mm and 10mm, but when you say 10mm, do you mean the 10-24mm? The 9mm is a stop faster, which makes it a better lens for astro photography. It's also quite a bit cheaper than the 10-24mm, but a lot less flexible as it doesn't have the varied focal range of the zoom.
Well, I'm late to the party...I see you aren't shooting in16x9. Or are cropping to this format in post. Away goes vignetting. Somehow I just won this lens with a Fuji X mount on ebay yesterday for $212. And a seller with fine feedback. That's really a crazy deal. Even at that price I'll be eating rice and beans till Saturday...Ah! there's your 16x9....
Well, only a few of my images are shot 16:9, and of course none of my vertical images are, so it's not an all round solution. It's still a decent lens though, and many of it's rivals also vignette equally, so $200 is a really good price for it
@Andy Mumford I decided to use neutral silicon rubber to make custom profile in Capture One, but the situation was so bad, that it didn't help. I wrote to Capture One support and they were very surprised as they never saw any lens with that level of vignette. I don't have any reason to not believe you, so I think, I just got bad example...
There are issues with individual lenses. Initial release had problems. Another copy can probably correct any issue. This is a great lens. This lens is magic.
@@keystonebrotherb This may be. I leave overseas and I had to order this lens in US. Also I paid extra to the delivery company because BnH doesn't ship to Russia. And I got bad example. Will I buy anything else from Laowa in the future? No. But if you have a chance to change it in local store, why not to try?
Check any reviews on ANY Laowa lenses. They are exemplary throughout the product line. I also own the 12mm and the 25mm macro. They are the best lenses I own as far as quality and value. You should try again.
Thank you for your impressions. To me it seems like none of the given example pictures are tag sharp. Am I right? Well no matter, I have the same issues since I use the Fuji system - in adition with the erratic and unreliable AF. Especially with landscapes and objects which are further away. No matter where I set the focus or if I the smallest possible aperture. That‘s my main critics on Fuji‘s X-series. Cheers

Kinda awesome. Sharp across most of the plane. Still the feel of the image is photographic flat. There is a certain soulless rendition of the light tone, depth. More digital than film
"There is a certain soulless rendition of the light tone, depth"
What does this mean, precisely?
@@caerphoto Sounds like he's comparing these raw files to post processed photos lol
@1:26 wow it takes a hit in sharpness compared to the 2 first focal ranges. Looks bad ???
Good review, thanks. Deciding between this 9mm and the Samyang 12 2.0 (for Sony APS-C).
Thanks a lot
Hi! I love your videos and I enjoyed your review of X-H2, Thanks for that again!
Have you tried this lens on xh2? I wonder if it has enough sharpness/resolving power to produce images with more than "good enough/usable" quality.
Thank you very much in advance.
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed the video. I didn’t try the Laowa on the XH2, but I suspect it doesn’t have the resolving power
@@AndyMumford Thank you.
hi...how to focus this lens on infinity?do you have to align the infinity sign on middle where theres a red line?
You need to put the focus a little before the Infinity mark on the lens
@@AndyMumford thank you!😊
@@AndyMumford thanks for the response
It's a beauty lens. I'm considering it for video productions. I have a Sigma 18-35, a 7 artisans, 25mm, 1.8, and 55 Mark II, 1.4, and this Lowa would round off what I could need. I'll be using it on a Canon EoSm, with Magic Lantern.
Yep, it's a great lens
Hi Andy, thanks for the video, it's really useful for me. Can you please advice me how should I use filters with this? I'm relatively new to photography!
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful. The lens takes screw in filters. How you use them really depends on the effect you want. I talk all about how filters work in this video ua-cam.com/video/aG8bf0gXo6Q/v-deo.html
@@AndyMumford thanks a lot, I'll look into it. Btw, the way you present your videos is very beautiful and informative. Thanks again.
Great video. I was expecting some star photography shots with the lens too. Hopefully you will post some for us to see :-D

Lovely lens. Lovely work. Thank-you.
Thanks for watching Larry
Hi Andy, i know this is an older video but any updates on this lens? Are you still using this or have you moved on?
Thanks...
I honestly can’t say until I’ve used the 16-80 (which should hopefully be next month). That would be an interesting set up and pretty lightweight.
hello would you recommend this. for astrophotography?
Yes, that's what I use it for
@@AndyMumford right on, do you have any videos about using that lens for astro?
Great video and some amazing images there too. I'm considering this lens myself for use with my Sony a6600 aps-c e-mount body. Manual focus lenses aren't a problem as far as I'm concerned. Have you ever tried this lens with a circular polariser filter? I know such filters aren't always a great idea for such ultrawide angle lenses. Thanks.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. I've never used it with a CPL
Greit rewiev. Thx soo much for sharing this.
Thanks for the comment Eirik, glad you found it useful
I've had this lens now for a while (and bought it partly influenced by your review, thanks) and now want to use if for astrophotography. Have you used it for shooting stars in the meantime and how did it perform, thanks!:)
I've used it a couple of times for stars, but it mostly gets used for auroras. It's fine for stars, although there is so comma in the stars at the borders
Great review! I’ve been looking at an ultra wife for my X-T2, both for travel and for my channel here. I think I’ll need to rent one. Thanks for the great info on this!

do you mean wide?
Thanks for your review!
I'm wondering what this lens is like compared to the Panasonic Lumix 9mm F/1.7 LEICA?
What is the difference between F2.8 and F/1.7 ?
Is one better than the other is shooting in low light?
I ordered the panasonic one 2 months ago and all the webshites say its out of stock and waiting for it to be sent to them from panasonic, really sloppy!!
Anyway ye just wonted to know cos I'll maybe need a refund and get the Laowa asap if this continues
by the way, the camera i have and what I'll use it for is the GH5 4k video shooting myself busking in day and night time on monopod
I haven't used the Panasonic so I can't compare
Hi Andy, what is your setup to use square filter on this lens ? Im thinking, 49-67 step up rings. + 67 adapter + cpl + square filter .. but im afraid it will cause "heavy vignette". Also, do you have tutorials on how to remove vignette?
That set up shot be OK to avoid vignetting..it depends on the thickness of the CPL and the size of the square filters (you should be fine if they're 100mm, but 75mm or 85mm will be a problem) As for removing vignette post capture. it's not something you can really do at all well and it's best to avoid it if possible
@@AndyMumford thank you as always.
@@AndyMumford wow that's really surprising! I'll give it a try, thanks.

Thanks!
At the moment I'm still using this for astro and aurora work, but there's a NiSi 9mm coming soon, and the Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 on the horizon
@@AndyMumford Never heard of NiSi. I'll keep an eye out. Meanwhile, I've already ordered the Laowa. :) Thanks again for your beautiful videos. Always inspiring.

"shot without lenses" - it is necessary to do ? What if I dont set this option?
Yes, it's necessary. Without it, the shutter won't work
Hi Andy. Great video as always. I've been searching for a ultra wide lens and I also came across the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8. The internet says it's the 'best'!!! Did you consider that as well by any chance??
Glad you liked the review. I can't comment on the Rokkinon as I haven't used it. I heard good things about the 12mm f2 though
Great review. How does it compare to the 10-24 at 10mm in terms of corner sharpness when both at f5.6 or f8?
The 10-24mm is sharper in the corners
@@AndyMumford Thank you!
How does it do with Astrophotography? You talked about getting for that reason but you never showed test shots of stars
This time of year is terrible for astro-photography where I live. I'll be in the Alps in a few weeks so I'll test it out then, if not then later in the winter when the night skies are better.
Andy Mumford thanks for the reply, I’ll wait for your opinion on it because I’m thinking about getting into Astrophotographers with my xt2
so whats the crop factor? 3x? So it s like 9x1.5 14mm focal length on the 35mm?
It's APS-C, so yes it's a 1.5 x crop giving a 35mm equivalent is around 13.5mm or 14mm
Hi Andy when the lens is stopped down does it darken the view finder or does only stop down when the the shutter is pressed?
Cheers
Richard
If the camera is set in full manual, then yes it will darken down the EVF and LCD.
Hi Andy thanks the the info very useful I have ordered one yesterday , Cheers Richard.
Generally I don't use variable ND filters as the quality is never good. If I had to suggest on though, I'd say look at PolarPro
@@AndyMumford Thank you
Great review. If I may... do you use LR to develop photos or utilize some other process?
Hi Tomek, I use LR for all my images.
Thoughts on the rokinon 12mm?
I havnet used it, although i hear its very good
Andy, Could you tell me what do you think would be a better first wide prime for fuji?
samyang 12mm f/2 or laowa 9mm f/2.8
This samyang seems to be really sharp and the extra stop of light helps more than 6mm equivalent diference for astro.
But I don't have a 10-24 (because $$$) And it would need to double as main landscape lens. xD
Also note that the samyang is almost half the price.
Is it worth trying to raise money and buy the laowa instead?
I think for a main landscape lens the 12mm is probably the best. I like the extra width for shooting stars, but 9mm is really wide and 12mm might be more flexible
Please Make a Comparison between Laowa 9mm 2.8 Vs Sony 10-18mm Lens I Want To Know Which Is Wide And which Give Best Quality Images
I don't use Sony cameras, apologies
Does the vignette occur when using a filter 100 square system?
No, 100mm filters don't cause the vignetting, it's just light fall off from the extremely wide field of view. ND filters in certain situations mays make it worse though (ND filters often have light fall off in the edges at wide angles).
1:34 comparing 18 mm 14mm then when you get to the 9mm there is a huge difference in quality, is this the actual footage with the 9mm?
It is shot with the 9mm, but any lack of quality is probably to do with video compression because the lens is pretty sharp
@@AndyMumfordthis is what i thought also. thanks for the video and ill buying soon!
Do you still own or use this lens despite having the 13mm Viltrox now?
I do still own it, but to be honest I almost never use it as I prefer the Viltrox. It's faster, sharper, has AF and doesn't vignette
Thank you.
Hi Andy! After this time, are you still so happy with this lens? Or have you finded new issues? Thanks, I'm considering this lens for future.
Hi, thanks for the comment. I'm still happy with the lens, yeah. It's great
@@AndyMumford thanks, Have you tried the Samyang/Rokinon 12 2.0? Is similar in image quality? I've the Samyang but I want something wider without loosing sharpness, definition,...
Laowa 9mm or Fuji 10-24? I do urbex photography, many interior photos.
Unless you need the extra width or the faster aperture of the Laowa, the Fuji 10-24 is the better lens.
dude, how you fix the vignette on this lens? what kind of lens correction profile you use?
I use a couple of techniques. First the Post-Crop Vignette tool in the Effects panel, and also graduated filters in the Basic panel.
Hi Andy, have you tested the X-T3? I know it's not out yet but I know Fuji do ask some photographers to test their new cameras before they release them.
Hi Anthony, no I've not seen one yet, and the photographers who do get to test them have to sign NDAs and can't speak about them before release.
Nice! Have you also tested the Samyang 12mm F2? I am torn between the two.
I haven't Sacha,but I've heard it's excellent
What brand is the 10-24mm?
It's fujifilm
Yes -useful and interesting. I don't think I want the 8-16 anyway, for the reasons you gave. Fuji told me they wee hoping a 3rd party supplier might solve the filter problem for them! We'll see.
I'm sure someone will come up with a way of attaching filters to the 8-16, but it certainly won't be conventional 100mm filters as they'll certainly vignette on a lens with a front element as big as that. It will have to be some sort of device that fits over the lens housing, which means carrying a different holder along with the huge lens. At the moment it's not tempting me, but I'll make my mind up when I get my hands on one later this year.
and... what do you think about Samyang 12mm f2 NCS to shooting stars?
Hi Francisco. I’m sorry but I’ve never used that l lens. I’ve heard it’s very good.
I think you should turn off the OIS
So is it good for shooting the stars? I heard it has bad coma issues? Really enjoyed the review!

This is pretty much f4, because vignette is brutal at f2.8. Even at f4 it's bad. Everything else is great.
Yep, that’s pretty true, and when you compare it with Fuji’s 8mm it’s not even close
Hello, which camera do you use for you Videos? Thanks
Fuji X-T2
Andy Mumford , Thanks didn’t want to assume. As a hiker I’m looking for a camera to take along. As the phone is just not capturing the beauty of Mother Nature to share with others. Looking at Fuji T2 vs Sony RX 100 VI almost same price point....What’s you thoughts? Realize it’s apple and oranges but it seems to come down to these two thus fare
I can't comment fairly Michael, as I have no experience of the Sony.
The fuji 8-16mm is a lovely lens I'm sure , but if you can accomplish most of what you desire with this Laowa lens, $500 is still less than $2000.
Edited that out, maybe uncalled for.
I will send mine back and try to get another one most likely
is there a big difference between the 9mm and 10mm ? doese it worth the extra money ?
It's still a decent lens though, and many of it's rivals also vignette equally, so $200 is a really good price for it
what is your fps for this video?
The worst thing about this lens is huge colored(!) vignette up to f/11. I sold it eventually.
Never noticed that myself
Cheers
I really want to like this lens but it does look soft to me.
I'd rather do a panoramic.
It's not perfect, but it does a decent job. Panos are OK for stars but not for aurora shots, so I prefer something as wide as possible.
The 8-16 might be better optically, but it's also 4 times the price and about several hundred times the weight and size ;)
