As a person with AA3 (brain cancer) and spends about 80% of my life in bed for the past, nearly, 3 years. I feel this song so deeply. I listen to it daily. Does nobody really get what this video is about? Everyones all like "lol weed and acid". This is about that feeling of you're living the same shit every day and you'll never reach your goals. The anxiety that I'm gonna be on this couch for the rest of my life. Stuck in a pit of depression. One step forward, just to fall right back in the same place. It inspires me to try harder and to make shit happen NOW rather than "some day" whenever I watch this. I love this song and video
Glad you got it too...it may be a little different from how I see it, but you are right. it really is a good lesson that I wish people that watch this song could understand. People get the lyrics, never the meaning
If you put all your dreams, wishes, ambition or whatever into "some day" you'll never go anywhere in life because you're living outside of the present moment. Great video and collaboration.
My interpretation.... it's a creative and visual depiction of the process of depression. It's his personal relationship with the depressive state of his consciousness.... it's a beautiful representation of the daily struggles that exist in his life. The perpetual cycle of loneliness.... reclusiveness..... no motivation creates the loop .... that forces him to be introspective and find what he needs from within.
I think it's more the cycle of apathy. Every day you kind of have a feeling of what you want to do, a goal, "the pursuit of happiness", cudi is saying everything will be fine once he reaches his goals, but daily life ends up a dreary loop of nothing where his depression and apathy take over and he never gets to work.
Mr. Sun apathy is one of many depressive symptoms.....aka lack of motivation....he ultimately describing his relationship with his own perception of his current reality....apathy is one of his many challenges. Kid cudi checked himself into rehab today. His statement: Its been difficult for me to find the words to what Im about to share with you because I feel ashamed. Ashamed to be a leader and hero to so many while admitting I've been living a lie. It took me a while to get to this place of commitment, but it is something I have to do for myself, my family, my best friend/daughter and all of you, my fans. Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges. I am not at peace. I haven't been since you've known me. If I didn't come here, I wouldve done something to myself. I simply am a damaged human swimming in a pool of emotions everyday of my life. Theres a ragin violent storm inside of my heart at all times. Idk what peace feels like. Idk how to relax. My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it. I cant make new friends because of it. I dont trust anyone because of it and Im tired of being held back in my life. I deserve to have peace. I deserve to be happy and smiling. Why not me? I'm 14. I know this song was popular back in the 2010s and watching back videos from the teenagers who lived in my hometown at that era makes me want to be born in 1992. It just seems so cool without social media and just hanging with your friends. Sometimes in the summer I get the same vibe and it feels like my pursuit of happiness has ended
27 here. I was like 14 when this song came out. Didn't appreciate it much then, but I loved it when I turned 18. This song really matched the vibe of a lot of us. We all use to hang out, play video games till late, never worrying about posting on social media like TikTok and Snapchat didn't really have stories then I don't think. Crazy because when I was in your shoes, I was listening to Pac, Nas and Snoop while Cudi, Kendrick, ASAP Rocky and Big KRIT were the new guys on the block. Enjoy your age man. Don't sweat it bro. There's no way to actually realize you're in the good old days when you're still in them, and you're in them right now. Every gen is different. Enjoy the time you left to still be a kid and have fun. I was born in 1980. Was a teenager in 90s. It was great, but so is today. You aren't subject to the monoculture that was prevalent back in the day. MTV and the radio were the onlly real way most kids were exposed to new music. Today you have multitude of music/media to consume and multiplying ways to access said media. Find what you vibe with and rock it.
I was born in 92. This song I use to wake up everyday for school smoke a bowl when letting the chickens out, go back inside talk to Mom high without her knowing. But she kinda knew. Then walked a block down the road to the bus stop smoked another bowl talked with my brother they didn't smoke. Only me. Man On The Moon wasn't a name, it was a way of life.

The Pursuit of Happiness is actually a never ending trail of unhappiness. Because happiness cannot be controlled all at once. One can only feel happy for a temporary time. It's a sad message in a happy tune. It's chasing something that can never be caught.
My god. I was just about to graduate high school and didn't have a care in the world when this came out. My friends and i just kicked it and smoked weed all the time. Cudi is SO nostalgic to me now, 10 years later. It hurts my heart.
@@BabyMachine same man. It's so crazy how fast a decade went. We were so young and so free. Creating new memories right now is the only thing that soothes that pain for me.
It’s tough, but we got this! Spend this time making and doing stuff you’ll smile about one day: that’s what I’m doing :) Scott is an inspiration, and I know you like him, so borrow some of his vibes and do some epic shit bro
Good! Sadness I wish MGMT, Ratatat, and/or Cudi collab'd more. Alive and Pursuit of Happiness had a lot of Ratatat input/influence and the sound production is god tier
It’s amazing how his music has such a profound sound and meaning behind it that’s different yet impactful from the first time I heard it till now when I’m older and understand more. Cudi is truly the underrated GOAT!
I feel like this video portrays more on the deeper meaning of the song, which is living the same cycle of monotony every single day (lying on the couch) and trying to end it to find "happiness" (trying to go outside, opening the doors etc.) but still ending up the same way everytime. This cycle portrays the depression he tries to escape over and over. The video ends with him finally going to what looked like a party, this meant that he finally was able to go outside after trying countless times, thus finding happiness. The breakdown at the end of the song is him repeating the chorus in a more subtle but peaceful tone, implying he found 'peace' in his mind. The other video is him finding "happiness" through parties, drugs and liquor. He believes that he can find happiness if he keep doing this and ignoring people telling him to 'slow down' (as from the lyrics in the first verse). The lively chorus serves as a hope (or rather, a false hope) that this is the right way but in reality, it's just temporary happiness that will leave you empty when it's all over. The song in this video doesn't end like the one above, rather it is much longer and involves him saying things like "why did i drink too much" implying that he regrets his decisions. The video ends with him looking at his wasted self and realizing what he have become.
Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hit Feelin’ lit, feelin’ light, 2 AM summer night. I don't care, hand on the wheel, driving drunk, I'm doin’ my thing Rollin the Midwest side and out livin’ my life getting’ out dreams People told me slow my roll I'm screaming out fuck that Imma do just what I want lookin’ ahead no turnin’ back If I fall if I die know I lived it to the fullest If I fall if I die know I lived and missed some bullets [2x] I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold, hey I'll be fine once I get it, yeah I'll be good. That was really quick. Ah, fuck it Oh, God, why did I drink so much and smoke so much, ah Ah, fuck it
nah man it not its actually about the fomality of drug use, trying to imagining yourself getting up and doing something, addiction Is the worst thing bro, im a doctor, or maybe im just too stoned, but I like the acts of violence being a man and doing all the things we don't need, weed for example it makes you paranoid or lazy, this video is depicting laziness, trust me on this im a veteran and whoever fucks with me im going to fuck them in the ass.
I remember hearing his music in high school, but I never LISTENED to it. It certainly has been life changing music for me. This song holds a special place on my heart. Hope everyone is doing well. #StayStrong
i passed out this school year idk why but i had this feeling turns out i had a 50% of getting cancer since i had a lypde node in my neck had to have surgery immediately or i would hhave a high chance of getting cancer that was stupid getting surgery in my neck
For me the pursuit of happiness was always in the bottom of a pill bottle , or a wine bottle. Always shiney, never gold. happily sober and married now. Never going back.
Greg, I miss you so much man. You loved this song and this video in particular. Can't even watch/listen without crying these days. Im so sorry I didn't sneak in the Kid Cudi show with you man. So many things I wish I could change. I love you so much brother and will always miss you with all my heart. RIP Greg Coleman. Love, Your little brother Cody
rest in peace Greg and keep your head up Cody! Losing a loved one is never easy to accept but it really does get better over time. I've unfortunately lost alot of family member and some good friends but I celebrate ther lives and smile thinking about the good times we had while they were still here with us. Also mary jane can help out alot too. Peace brother.
Those smoking to this; completely missed the point. Song is about trying to do anything productive but you can never do it, you're stuck in a loop of depression.
I swear the first time I got high it felt like the first half of this video. It felt like no matter how hard I tried to do get somewhere, I kept lagging(only word that can accurately describe the situation) back to the same spot.
+Dopey Panda not sure why you'd want to trigger it, I always hated that shit. But uh, repeated actions have been known to contribute as well as letting go of concentration, making yourself lose focus and what not. Just get super stoned and don't think I guess
It's weird because some of the masterpieces are made from really sad people. If Kid Cudi wasn't this depressed, maybe we wouldn't have this amazing song. I don't know if I should feel guilty enjoying this song, but I'm glad he found help before it's too late. MGMT good as always btw.
For those who don't know this music video is fucking gold the director is subliminally pointing out how it feels to have night terrors or sleep paralysis without the hallucinations as you can see he often try's to get out of his sleep but ends up in the same coach and you see him levitate or as it appears you can see him levitate within the music video that's another sensation of night terrors or sleep paralysis cudi really touched my heart and soul with this music video I know I am not alone I know what it feels like and only very few will know what I am talking about. I'm outs
I have paralysis and that one shot of him levitating captures the same vibe of being stuck in paralysis or in life and its one of the most beautiful music videos good job cudi
I love this song. Each of us has our own drug we use. Our own addiction, that we use to try to distract ourselves from life. We have our escape. It may be books, phones, music, whatever, but all of us are on the pursuit of happiness. "I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good." We can never obtain this happiness, so its a constant struggle.
This song changed my life. The video is even more powerful. Coming from a 44 year old mom of 2. Please keep doing your thing, Cudi. You are love and you are loved.
+Not Hating Just Stating I find the most people interesting people in my life are people who share this same sentiment as me. I am 30 and everyday is another step in this direction and it's great. :-)
+Not Hating Just Stating you'll be fine bro. i went through the same shit when i moved high schools. keep a positive attitude and persevere on. it sucks :(
Ive been listening to this song since 4th grade. This song help me through middle school and now high school. Kid cudi is a very great artist and very unique that's why I love him so much.
For me, this song brings me back to the times when I used to party almost every night and not do anything productive at all, leaving me a mess in the end, without having gained anything worthwhile. Please people, partying is fun and all, but do it moderately, because you don't gain anything from it in the long run. Remember to focus on your dreams and goals in life

Exactly - recommended today.. I assumed that its something freshly released until your comment :D Still happy for this, Its these 10 years ago when I was listening to Ratatat.. good memories refreshed.
this whole video just looks like someone trying to get off the couch so he can be productive but he can't do it cause the couch is too comfortable. story of my life
If anyone is still out there on that pursuit of happiness, don't give up. Keep pushing forward and realize that this life is truly the only life we have, regardless of our past we all are human, trying to see our future. Day by day to see a better day folks. I love y'all and I hope y'all get closer to your dreams and aspirations, have an amazing 2020.
I just found this song a week ago, not long ago i got over a really bad depression. Of course it still sticks with you not as bad but i guess my pursuit of happiness will never be too far
I have heard the song so many times, my favorite version has been Lizzie's drunk live cover... but nothing hit like the scene in The King of Staten Island - finally discovered this version. I'm pretty mad for missing out on this one. Ugh. I now need a whole video where Pete Davidson is driving to nowhere, while this is playing.
When I listen to this song, I imagine seeing everyone around you just ignoring you, old friends not talking to you, meanwhile you’re just like that’s fine, I’m gonna do my thing and be on “the pursuit of happiness”. 🤙🏻
This song really helps me when i'm sad , It reminds me that what happens , will happen. Nothing can be perfect even though I may want it to , No human that I know can stay forever.
As a bipolar/schizophrenic that is always the life of the party and "happy-go-lucky-guy" this song resonates so hard. LOVE this song since it came out but as i get older and get get a better grip on my condition the more i realize this song is pretty damn deep.
It is...my boyfriend was bipolar/schizophrenic and the life of the party...unfortunately went unmedicated for too long combined with alcohol and took his life in May. Wish I understood more about the mania he went through...just not the type you would ever imagine to...
I get 2 different feelings from this song. The first being I'm on top of life and nothing can stop me. The second being in a middle phase where i'm not sad or happy, just stuck in a place I don't know how to get out of.
I can remember we always used to play this at house parties when I was like 14/15 and get drunk and it was such a great happy song Now im 24 and its a lot sadder than I remember, it hits way different being an adult
As a person with AA3 (brain cancer) and spends about 80% of my life in bed for the past, nearly, 3 years. I feel this song so deeply. I listen to it daily. This is an anthem for a life time.
The Pursuit of Happiness is actually a never ending trail of unhappiness. Because happiness cannot be controlled all at once. One can only feel happy for a temporary time. It's a sad message in a happy tune. It's chasing something that can never be caught.
Damn randy😂
I love how Cudi isnt afraid to put his feelings into his art.
exactly!
I wish somebody had forced me to listen to this song. 6 years later and I finally decided to listen to it. Holy fuck i've been missing out.
yes you have listen to kid cudi his old songs not his new songs there wack

My god. I was just about to graduate high school and didn't have a care in the world when this came out. My friends and i just kicked it and smoked weed all the time. Cudi is SO nostalgic to me now, 10 years later. It hurts my heart.
The whole album, yes!
@@BabyMachine same man. It's so crazy how fast a decade went. We were so young and so free. Creating new memories right now is the only thing that soothes that pain for me.
Somewhere between 1987-2011 things were so freely, not a worry in the world, then we became adults and loosing loved ones left and right. 😥

Bro this exactly how I feel. Makes me sad. Hope you’ll find happiness someday
Before covid i wasnt the happiest person but i had moments where i was genuinely happy now i forgot the feeling of genuinely being happy
Ratatat + MGMT = Goodness
I just wish that MGMT were given a bigger role, all thy really did was record backing vocals :/

I swear the first time I got high it felt like the first half of this video. It felt like no matter how hard I tried to do get somewhere, I kept lagging(only word that can accurately describe the situation) back to the same spot.
I always just called it a loop.
bro fr lmaoo but it feels really good when you're high
👍
+Cody Arkinstall any way to trigger the loop? I never feel like I'm in a loop anymore
You can’t spend your life thinking about what if’s friend, you gotta live in the moment
I'm outs
Anthony Martinez Bruh we got the same first and last name 😂
I think that music video is more about not progressing in your life. He starts every day the same just to end up on the coach again.
Funny. I hear a song about paralyzing anxiety and how it causes one to be depressed about that very paralysis.
I have paralysis and that one shot of him levitating captures the same vibe of being stuck in paralysis or in life and its one of the most beautiful music videos good job cudi
What living the same day over and over again feels like
I love this song.
